  1. I did this a few times and in the beginning, all seemed well....not issues.....then time passed and the damage was seen....the salts burned the leaves of bush I was "watering"......the grass died too.....had not weeds though :-) ..... yes, it seamed like a great idea rather then tossing the used tank water down the drain but over time, not so much.
  2. ok, in the issue of "C....The Journal" by Anthony Calfo mentions the following following tip on how to contain an anemone: "line the walls of your culture tanks with plastic carpet (indoor-outdoor type for patios). The anemones barely adhere to this surface and they can be easily plucked for handling, propagation or safe collection" Hope this helps yes chip, when I get back, I will let you barrow the mag.....great mag if anyone is interested..... oh and as far as proper fragmentation....calfo states "simple bilateral split with a surgical scalpel or razor blade"...."Cut species will immediately begin to recover by cinching their body closed around the exposed edge and expressing their defensive tentacles promptly again within one hour of being cut..." wish I could have seen this in person.....way to go chip for providing this opportunity
  3. good idea.
  4. fingerprinted a coral/ fish....??? ok tang, we have placed you at the scene now fess up!!!!
  5. Agree, this summer symposium was very good. I actually was able to hear the speakers this time thanks to the fact that so selling/trading took place while the talks were being given. Really appreciate the WAMAS leadership's hard work in putting this on and getting such a terrific linup of speakers. There was something for everyone. Wish I had the expertise and/or ability to take time off the take part in some of the trips that were mentioned or even SECORE for that matter. Thanks again for the symposium. The free table was populated w/ a few frags.....all whom got some, enjoy, the ones I donated were acquired during last years frag fest so enjoy and spread the love when they grow in size. There was also an amazing number of raffle frags. Some folks walked any with multiple nice pieces. Thank you also to the vendors/fellow reefers that had nice colonies and frags for sale. [i know I spend money on some things that were on my wish list, don't tell the wife :-) ] So, just all and all, thank you
  6. Ok, here is the deal. I am going to Irvine CA for the weekend and am wondering if it pays to visit any of the LFS out there....if I would be close to them and maybe bring back a coral or two. 1) Does anyone know how to get a list of LFS for another city and/or a forum site for a club out there I could read some of their vendor exp. 2) Anyone travel w/ coral on a plane? How is it done? What should I expect? Is it worth it?
  7. same here, big thumbs up. Ordered at 12:30am sunday night....box shipped monday...arrived to my door tuesday. Big help considering the local HomeDepo never has what I need and BRK sometime is just too far to drive.
  8. http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/cat/infoL3...13/category.web used blue and black ....two different tanks....I prefer black but coraline will cover eventually.
  9. mine came on a frag of galaxia I got at last years frag fest and it seems to be doing fine. I do not target fed and the galaxia does not bother it. Not sure if there needs to be any extra care given. Been feeding on what ever is in the water and been happy....atlest as far as I can tell.
  10. how about smaller netting? say from a bad of onions or something like that protecting the overflow.....do the sides of your grow out facility extend above the water line? make them scale a wall dodge a few ninjas, etc...
  11. would like to watch the fragging...can photo if nobody else is willing. would like to learn how to.....even though you talk to much for my taste just tell me how I can help.
  12. I am in the same boat as well as I am sure many of us are. My plan, with the help of a friend is to re-aquascape and at that time, afix some of the frags that are growing well to my rockwork. The smaller frags will stay on my frag racks but the larger ones will be glued to the rock work. If you are worried about the plug, a dremmel can be used to cut away the plug and/or shape the plug to fit into its intended location in the rock. for the larger pieces, try taking a small frag of it before you mount the larger piece just incase something happens to the one you have.....also can be used for trading with the friend that helped and continues to help you.
  13. what is the "critical size".....mine just keeps speading. mass moved from low in the tank to taking over the large rock at the top of the tank, blocking light to some of my corals. Have trimmed back but it just grows right back. I seems to like the amount of water flow in my tank I guess (ehiem 1262 on wavySea, tunze 6080, korilia 4, tunze 6045 full flow mod) on a 90. If any one at any time needs pulsing xenia, just PM me and will always part with it.
  14. 4x pulsing xenia frags (mounted) 2x small (1/2") frags of pink birds nest some yellow polyps......have to remember to frag them in the next day or two 2x kenya frags 2x frags of this - unknown 2x frags of this - unknown 2x frags of this - unknown got these last year at the frag fest....have no idea what they are but it has been great seeing them grow. images were taken 6 months ago.
  15. how about a tangwich A sandwich which is made by swiping bread inside a Tang drink mix container to collect the dust of the Tang onto the bread. Originated from the Married with Children TV series. I was starving to death and only had bread and Tang mix, so I made tangwiches.
  16. I second the zip-tie method. seems to work well.
  17. not cheap but very nice http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/m...;Category_Code=
  18. where are you getting your information? Is there a site that gives the life expectancy of other bulbs? sanjay ? (http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/index.htm)
  19. well I have a wavySea plus and even though it has been mounted on the top of my tank and above (not by much) the water line, water found a way inside and the motor stopped. As these units are not waterproof the manufacturer will tell you it is not covered any the 12 month warranty but, you can buy a new motor unit which is cheeper then re-buying the entire unit. I however, took the thing apart :-) What did i discover? the key to the entire unit is a stepping motor. The motor got wet, corroded (but not badly) and got jammed. After a cleaning, and using a little dieletric grease, the stepping motor works again. The only question I have left now is what is the proper grease i should be using inside the stepping motor that will not breakdown or can I just get away with dialectric grease? I also do not understand why they do not use any silicon on this unit. a little silicon would do wonders from preventing water from entering these units in case of splashing from tank.
  20. cool idea...that is unless you are the fish. I don't know about you, but living in a toilet in a bathroom isw not my idea of living the good life. Would not even subject a plant to that kind of life. now where did I leave that can o chili and beans :-)
  21. how much xenia do you want? I have a few pieces of pulsing xenia if you need/want. you can also think of joining wamas and attending the upcoming meeting on the 23rd where there is sure to be frags for trade and sale.
  22. once a quarter we have an exterminator come but they do not spray the floor where the tank is. The tank is in the basement and I close off that level of the house where they are there. When gone, all the windows get opened as to air out as quickly as possible......been threw this a few times w/o any losses......course we still have ants too :-)
  23. very nice.....great ideas.....and great pics
  24. is it in a place where you can cut it off w/ a razor
  25. looking at investing in a calcium reactor for my 90gal SPS/LPS tank and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this reactor. I have an octopus skimmer and it works great but just wondering if thier calcium reactor is as good as the Precision Marine Calcium Reactor.
