  1. In my search for alternative ways to light my reef tank and save a little on the home energy bill, I finally decided to look into LEDs. I had looked at both PFO Solaris I5 and the AquaIllumination offerings and then, I found this story. http://www.reefbuilders.com/2009/02/03/big-trouble-brewing-future-aquarium-leds/ ".....patent lawsuit which was filed by the Orbital Technologies Corporation, also known as Orbitec. For some unknown reason, this primarily aerospace research and development company with over $150 Million in industry and government contracts decided to patent the use of LEDs for Marine aquariums, well after the people began to use LEDs for marine tanks and well after PFO began shipping the Solaris luminaire. Once they were awarded the really broad and obviously bogus patent, Orbitec filed a lawsuit against the most obvious aquarium LED manufacturer PFO. PFO tried to reason with the corporation, even offering to sell the lighting division to Orbitec. The suits at orbitec made it clear that they had no intention of operating in the aquarium industry and they demanded 25% royalties on all LED products sold.....the implication of this lawsuit will affect all light fixtures which use LEDs, that means Current, Aqua Illuminators, AquaFX and even all the little moonlight makers could be next on the chopping block." This was a contributin factor that resulted in " PFO Lighting, one of the leading innovators and manufacturers of aquarium lighting, laid off their entire staff." This is yet another sad day. If the economic situation does not wipe you out then patent lawsuits will.
  2. I setup mine per vendor documentation.... I use a old baby bottle w/ ml markings on it and timed for 1 min flow rate = 35ml per minute ph of effluent taken by probe in lid of reactor by AC3 ph usually at 6.8 - 6.9 bubble is very slow....1 every 3 - 4 sec
  3. no, that is what I had after eating chipotle a few too many times.....
  4. did you get a new membrane too? If not, how old is it? What is the TDS into the unit if 9 is the TDS of your product water?
  5. Do you have a URL of the calculators you are referring to? I use .5 dKH a day at a ph of 6.8 out of my k2r calcium reactor.
  6. not just an issue w/ biocube but all RR tanks in my view. I vac my overflow in my 90.
  7. cant say normal or not but my torch coral does the same thing from time to time
  8. why not just build it bigger? Chip and I built two of them, really easy. Mine is 36" x 18" x 5" . It is no longer HOB but rather sitting on a shelf/stand behind the tank due to weight (and the 1st one falling off due to operator error). Chips ended up being slightly shorter but both work like a champ.
  9. A large number of the corals that were fragged during the frag fest were donated by the membership. It was a great mix of donated corals from WAMAS vendor sponsors and members alike. This frag fest could not have been a success without the generosity of both. Thank you all who donated, participated, volunteered, played, ate, cooked, transported, and those who attended......and a special thanks to those who just put up with having a tank in the house.
  10. put me down for 20 gal......and will be there to assist as needed......
  11. Will be there too.....unsure about wife and kids.....
  12. Had my first saltwater tank in my first home up and running the day I moved in....well sand and pumps and rock etc...... to make things simple.....well did not want to place the tank on new carpet so I decided to place the tank in my kitchen.....on the hardwood floor about 6" away from two walls.......was in the corner long story short, after 8 years of the tank running......we moved and moved the tank...... hardwood stained......dry wall had to be re-painted w/kilz and floorboard replaced due to salt I did not have a wife at the time however....well my girlfriend stood there and helped me shop and setup the tank.....and further proof to why I did eventually marry her :-) remember, carpet can be replaced....walls can be painted.
  13. Have your nitates been dropping since you added the fuge and cut back on food? How about water changes? How much and how often? what do you mean by "I have a GreySeas kalk reactor - put fresh kalk in it every 2 weeks, or when it's low." ? What method are you using to determine "low" ? pH change? media level in reactor? time? Are you careful to rinse you hands or use gloves before sticking hands in tank?
  14. so what about pumping air right into the venturi instead of relying on the pump pulling air in on it's own? would you not get a more steady amount of air into the skimmer this way? I know with my mesh modded octo NW-150 recirculating the air into the venturi seems to very at times.....
  15. Had a really mean one take out a coral beauty.......but other then that, didn't really bother anything....well chased all fish got in it's way..... I guess a 55 w/ 3 other fish was just too small for the angry little bugger :-)
  16. found this a while back, should be helpful..... Reef Store Locator and Aquarium Store Finder .....maybe not, nothing listed for TX
  17. not sure how long the AC3 will run on just the batttery but my goal of this was just to get a message out re: a power outage. Yes, you could also get a 9V DC wall wort and pluging that into the network UPS. More then one way to skin the cat
  18. How do you configure a power failure alarm on an AC3? Would like to utilize the power failed/Restored features but how? Well here is the answer since my search turned up nothing.... built a pigtail from the following two parts sourced a radio shack parts list ]1/8" mono phone plug [part number 274-288 pkg of 2] 9v battery snap connectors [part number 270-325 pkg of 5] one 9volt battery soldered red + to center pin soldered black - to outside pin attached 9 volt battery to pigtail and connected it to battery port of ac3 added the following lines to my config If Power 000 Then ALM ON If Power 000 Then T51 OFF Max Change 015 M Then T51 ON If Power 000 Then MH1 OFF Max Change 020 M Then MH1 ON works like a champ......I have it setup to turn on the T5s first then the MHs as to not turn back on everyting all at once....just a personal pref note, you will still have to have a UPS/generator to power your router to keep you network alive....without network connection, email will not flow
  19. Spawning coral turns sea pink video of coral swawn.....
  20. I just started to use a Simplicity Chemical Reactor
  21. howard, come by the house this weekend, will show you what I did....also, why not mod the tunze(s) you currenlty have. really increases flow out of the 6025s and have figured out how to prevent them from spinning the wrong way.
  22. I have a 90 and have had 6080 ... same foot print on the 6100 .....I now have a mix of 2x6055s and a 6045 and a 6025. much better options. with the small footprint you can point the stream where it needs to be and does not stick out like a sore thumb. only issue I have is the frequency of cleaning the nanos
  23. they work great have both sizes. Can hold my Maxi-Jets and Tunze 6080 without issues. Very strong magnets inside. Even set one up to hold onto my modded MJ1200 and did not budge. I have an 90gal acrylic tank.
  24. you can also run an extention cord to the outlet the T5 currenlty plugs into then plug the T5 into the extention cord and a small night light into another socket in the same extention cord therby increasing the load on the socket of the DC8. Extention cord is cheaper then Socket Expansion.
