  1. I thought that at one time too but it really will be the cleanest looking option. Does the stand have any openings in the back?
  2. Sorry my wording may not have been the best. Correct I want everything flush. The magnets will be countersunk into the skin. The 3/4" measurement was based off my initial thought of 3/4" material. If I can go with 1/2" or even 1/4" material then the stand would only be made that much smaller. Here is an example of what I have seen before.
  3. You bring up a good point. I'm use to buying 3/4 plywood for other projects that it was stuck in my head. By using a thinner material I can greatly reduce the amount I need to cantilever. Acrylic I would worry about warping though.
  4. Whoa thats awesome! Good work on the build and ceramic piece.
  5. A few months ago I picked up a tank from a WAMAS member with a metal stand. Its been years since I had a metal stand on an old 75g tank. I forgot how much I love them! Now I'm in the planning stages of my big boy tank. Well big to me. The tank is 72Lx36Wx24H. It will be skinned with panels attached with magnets. No equipment underneath as it will be backing into the unfinished part of my basement. My main concern is about wanting the panels flush with the tank. I figure the skin will be skinned with 3/4" material (Undetermined but def not MDF!) and laminated. Can I get the metal stand made 3/4" smaller all the way around? (really only the front and 2 sides) The tank itself will have its entire footprint supported by whatever I choose to put on top of the stand. I have seen something similar on smaller tanks just did not know how that would translate to a bigger tank. I would also like to hear what my options are for skinning the stand. Im going for the simple high gloss white look like I had on my cadlights tank. At some point I had come across some sort of marine grade laminate but I lost the link and I'm sure it was pricey.
  6. That's what I was thinking. Can you pull them up off as a mat?
  7. Dollar Tree by the handfuls Plus Boston Aqua Farms Reef Glue accelerator (or BSI Insta-Set) for us impatient ones.
  8. I would poke around different freshwater forums for ideas as well. Many fw keepers like to have fish rooms with racks of tanks. A lot of them are sponge filtered but some systems are creative with sumps.
  9. I have a DC6000 that has done me just fine for over a year. I don't have a need to adjust the flow although the feature is nice to have. The main reason for me to go with DC pumps where I can is to help me offset some of the cons of running MH's. Sure its not much but ill take what I can get. Any energy I can save and heat I can avoid is fine by me! Lastly is noise although thats not a biggie on my list. Reliability is always a concern with a vital piece of equipment so I keep a spare (its a mag!)
  10. Are those are bubbles? I don't think they are but its hard to tell. Im also on the wait list for the ATS. He said I should be on the next round!
  11. I have been cycling tanks with a raw shrimp and ghost feedings since I'm never in a rush. Yup even pee! Thought I would try the pure ammonia dosing way this time. A week ago I started cycling a frag tank with Dr. Tims ammonia at the recommended dose. The next day I added some of Dr. Tims one and only bacteria but it was a small bottle for 60 gallons when I have double that volume. I let it go for a couple days. As of last night it has not budged at all. I figured my bacteria bottle was too small to do much. That or I overdosed ammonia and killed the bacteria. As of now I'm assuming its slow going and will just ride it out.
  12. On the main floor was another vendor who made rock structures. His were a darker color that kind of purpled up when wet. I love all my Alternative Reef pieces and am also curious how well these wrasse dens work. Im sure they work for the wrasse just fine but how well do they hold sand in? My gut says I'm going to have stray sand everywhere which would just be annoying.
  13. I have a Lagoon 50. Minus price zero complaints.
  14. I saw them at MACNA but since I was not in the market for a skimmer I kind of brushed them off. I wish I would have taken a closer look now. They def looked sharp walking by though.
  15. Did you end up getting that one tank from HoT?
  16. This is what I bought. I can't remember if I needed the male or female side but by getting the extension you get both! I cut it to the length I needed and added an outlet plug to it. Ta-da http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XK3I1D2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
  17. I ended up not putting one in at the moment. Ill take the normal steps I have before but just incase I feel the need to I left a perfect spot for one. If I do add one it will most likely order this one: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Flag-Products-Socket-Connector/dp/B005JTM2K8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1455314634&sr=8-2&keywords=ball+check+valve
  18. I use to love this stuff in my freshwater days. I can't remember where I got it but it came from Swiss Tropicals and I bought a sheet. I would cut it to fit the height and width of a tank. Cut two holes and some airline so the entire wall was a biological and mechanical filter. Once I decided to power it with a mag 3 or 5 and had a heck of a hillstream tank.
  19. Laurel Glass is who I have always used as well.
  20. Whats everyones thoughts on having a check valve on returns? I have never used one but since I'm planning the plumbing for a new frag tank I tossed the idea around. Whats everyones opinions? Not worth the cost and maintenance cost? Think of it as extra insurance? Thanks
  21. I dip z/p's, and acans in hydrogen peroxide with great success. Algae all gone and usually by the next day they are open and looking happier then before. I also don't really have a measurement. I take some tank water in a container that I made a small frag rack for. Add Frags and squirt some hp in. Once I see some fizzing/bubbles coming up I pause for moment. Ponder. Then squirt a little more and leave them in for 5 mins. I once thought I overdid it with some bloodshots, blue hornets, Rastas and bowsers. It was a very high dose (slip of the hand) and I walked away for longer then I thought. They had closed up and started too look like they were boiling. They had some sort of clear blisters on them. Surely they were toast. I was kicking myself. I put them back in the tank and the next day they were open! After a few weeks like nothing ever happened. What im trying to get to is that I think it is hard to OD them with hp. I just wish I could find something that would work with SPS.
  22. This lends to way too many puns. I think I would just replay videos in my head of tanks breaking and never get any sleep.
