A while back a Wamas member was asking for someone in the DC area who made custom aquarium stands/furniture. Turns out a gal in my church group's husband is a retired Navy Captain who makes amazing, custom furniture. I sent Joe a bunch of pictures of aquarium stands and asked if it was something he would be comfortable making and he not only said yes, but if you look at his portfoliio you'll see he can do a lot more than that. Joe is located in the Fredericksburg Area. His email address is: jbmwilkinson@verizon.net and the website is: www.wilkinsonswoodworking.com. Hope this helps! Maureen

Chip and Bob, Beautiful job, truly. What are you keeping in the 2 smaller side tanks? How much room do you have behind the tanks, is it a room? Love this look, can't wait to see it all done and stocked.............. hoping for a tank tour. Bob - you have a wonderful talent. -
Conserving water in your home................
MLazar replied to MLazar's topic in General Discussion
Bob, Do you know how approximately how much water you save with a brick? Seems like a water bottle would be about the same size. I just think an estimate of 1 - 2 gallons sounds too good to be true. Maureen -
Sean and his staff are awesome! I hope you'll post a picture of your new addition to the tank! Maureen

We're often sharing ways on Wamas to use the waste water from RO/DI units instead of letting it go down the drain, literally. Som folks are using it for lawn irrigation and my personal favorite is to use it to do laundry. Whether your using an RO/DI unit or not, I read an article in Sunday's paper that suggested the following method to reduce water used in each individual toilet flush by 1 - 2 gallons, helping with anyone's water bill. (This is for non-low-flow toilets which already save water). Take a plastic water bottle, fill it with water, recap it and place it in the tank. It does not specify the size of the water bottle, but I'm trying a 24oz. I have concerns that if it floats around too much it could interfere with the actual function of the shut off valve inside the tank, but so far no problems. My daughter mentioned that they've discussed this in their science class, but the teacher recommened using pebbles or sand so the floating issue would be solved. Just an idea I wanted to share. Jamal, I saw an article in today's Free Lance Star, our local newspaper. There is a 3-day program spnsored yby the Fredericksburg Area Builders Association that begins on Monday. "Topics center around aspects of green construction technology". "For more infomration go to fabava.com and click on "GreenPro 2009 or call call 540-898-2730. Pre-registration is required." I did not go to the site to see what day, if any, solar panels will be discussed, but it seems like it would logically be included. If you do head down this way, please stop by and see our tank. And, if you hang out around dinner time, there are teriffic places to eat (and 2 new pubs that have serious selections of beer and wine) in downtown historic Fredericksburg and maybe we can get some local reefers to hang out. Does anyone know of a steel stand builder in the area
MLazar replied to epleeds's topic in General Discussion
Eric, I happened across a custom furniture builder on Craig's List last week who is a welder as well as works with wood. I wrote to him about Wamas and the stand you were interested in having made, as well as sending the picture you have posted. He replied that yes, he could build it. All he would need are the dimensions. He gave me permission to post his contact information as well, so here it is: Eagle One Research & Development LLC Gregory Zacek 334 Cleveland St Warrenton, VA 20186 540-878-6551 Cell eagleonellc@verizon.net http://www.eagleoneresearch.com/ From Mr. Zacek's ad: "A little about me. Associate of Art, and Associate of Science. Two Bachelors of Science in Industrial Manufacturing and Aerodynamics from Central Washington University. Masters in Metallurgy from University of Washington. Aircraft technician, Flight instructor, WWII Air show performer, Airline Captain for 18 years. Real Estate Agent(inactive). I held two patents, which I sold, Unlimited boat racing Crew Chief. Machinist and welder, some schooling and self taught." I hope it works out for you, please keep us informed. Maureen -

Jamal, Check your TV program guide for "Planet Green". There are several shows that have had episodes around installation of solar panels. I think Guy is right on with regard to the expected cost. One thing to note though, the less expensive the system, the less energy you may produce depending on your home's demands. Less expensive systems may only suppliment a portion of your electricial needs (I've seen a show where a 16K system only gave a return of 30% of the home's electricity needs). The more expensive systems have the potential to make money for you. When Jon and talk about building our retirement home we want solar panels and water collection systems. Let us know what you find out. Maureen

I think we may have been in the store at the same time, were we talking about our challenges in seeing into the bottom of the upper level tanks? Maureen

I appreciate the lower salinity as we QT our fish in a state of hyposalinity and it is less stressful on the fish I think to have one less thing to cope with after being caught, bagged and transported. Just my opinion.
