  1. You can run it like that, with one pump as recirculating and one acting as a feed pump. However, if you use the extra $30 feed pump you get 2 pumps acting as recirculating and will get better performance. Plus, a recirculating skimmer is not affected by changes in water level.......so a poweroutage/feeding/return pump failure would not make the skimmer overflow like it does with the non-recirculating in-sump skimmers. Another good thing about Avast skimmers (other than them being local manufacturers and members of WAMAS), is that they use the PSK pumps. I don't care how good a pump is.........they fail. It could be a fluke, manufacturer design, or the day it goes out of warranty it just decides to crap out. The PSK1000 pumps are very energy efficient and inexpensive. While DC pumps are energy efficient, they cost a lot more and there have been some issues with them. Do yourself a favor and go with Avast.
  2. The swabbie alone would give you an extra 50g on the ratings. Plus, they are rated for a medium to heavy bioload. Having the skimmate locker would enable you to let it go longer without emptying the cup. I had one on my heavily stocked 220g with a 40g sump and it absolutely rocked. I was stupid to get rid of it.
  3. You could also drill the tank in each corner on the upper back pane and put in a SCWD on a return pump like Alan suggested. This would give you some random current with no powerheads. Or you could even come over the top without having to drill the tank. Don't worry about the sashimi factor........anything powerful enough to grind a fish would blow the water right out of your tank! lol
  4. Drop in a Rabbitfish and let it go to town!!
  5. If you are going to pay $400, why not look at an Avast? The CS-1 with a swabbie and neck cleaner would do nicely on your size tank.
  6. I had one of those a while back. The skimmer itself is good, but the Aquabee pumps that they use are troublesome. I would make sure that the pumps are in working order and that the impellers don't show any damage. Replacement pumps run about $350 each from Deltec.
  7. Just let it go........it takes time. You shouldn't have to throttle back the MJ at all.
  8. Is the skin falling off or does is just look like spots where it's dying.? Are there any LPS close to it? Just wondering if anything could be stinging it.
  9. If you do bring them, I recommend a dose of Benadryl..........then they just won't care. That goes for spouses too.
  10. I have 3 d120s over my tank and I have the blues on each unit come on every 15 minutes and then the whites every 15 minutes after that. I just reverse it going off. No ramping up or down. First blues on at 9am and the last blues off at 9pm.
  11. Sorry to hear about the accident. What piece are you looking for? If you want to borrow a Mag 9.5 to get circulation going until your pump gets here I have one for you.
  12. In my opinion, you get what you pay for when it comes to skimmers. I have never personally used a bubble magus but I've read that they are pretty cheaply made. That doesn't mean that they won't perform well though.
  13. I wouldn't. Could you take the whold rock out? Maybe chip the piece that's encrusting off? If you absolutely HAVE to do it, I would wait until just before lights on to see if the coral tissue recesses, then just break it off.
  14. Ok Dan, we're coming up on a year since you gave us the "It's Alive" tease. This really is getting to be cruel.......we need some pics!
  15. Haha........you just got schooled Jenn!!
  16. Do it do it do it do it do it do it do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2 I would do a couple soaks in fresh water with dechlorinator to make sure you get rid of it all. Then dry it again, and do a saltwater soak. This worked well for my rock. No ill affects from the bleach at all.
  18. That is weird. I feed the Formula One frozen and it usually has the opposite effect on my skimmer. Everytime I feed frozen it kills the foam in my skimmer.
  19. There is nothing wrong there. 90% of the BTAs that I've seen look like the second picture. It's rare that I see them keep the bubbles out when you have good flow in the tank.
  20. For that price they better make a dam good martini and crap gold sand!
  21. Tell you what. You swing by whenever you want to smell stinky nog. That ATB on my system pulls out stuff that will gag a maggot.
  22. On a good note, the tile in that room should be finished in about a week and things will be organized.........no USB cable going across the floor. However, from now on only size 12 and below allowed behind the tank!!
