  1. WEEKEND BUMP
  2. I stopped by the store today to pick a few rics from the "group buy" that Sonny set up with one of his vendors. The deal on the rics was great, alot of thanks to Sonny and the vendor for offering us the chance to get them from the store. I actually met Sonny today for the first time, even though I have been to the store about a dozen times over the past year or so. It was great talking to him about the new vendor set up he has in the store, I think its great idea and will bring us hobbyists the chance to get alot of different things all in one place. The selection was great, and the prices were pretty good as well, in fact some of the things I thought were a down right steal. An elegance coral about the size of a baseball for $50, several brain corals that were HUGE, 5"-6+", for $75, small acan colonies for $20, and some of the brighest candy canes I have ever seen for $20 for a 2 or 3 head frag. Since Mr. Coral started the $10 frags I thought it really started to take over the store. While I thought it was a great idea, being able to get a good deal on coral, I thought it really took away from the selling of colonies in the store, all the tubs seemed to be filled with frags and no colonies. While its nice to get cheap corals, I didnt want to have a tank full of frags. I told Sonny this today, and he agree and stated the internet sales really drove this, and the store selling itself got a little neglected. Now he is offering the best of both worlds, a great deal on frags from the interent sales, and incredible corals from the vendors in store. Cant ask for much more then that. From talking with Sonny today you could tell that he really stands behind this new set-up and believes it is going to work, some of the sections have sold out already and have or are soon to be restocked. Good Luck with the new venture, I am sure after seeing it today that it will be a huge success. Cant wait till I have more money to go back to pick up a few more things.
  3. Chad had this pic up back in the POTM for March. Looks much bigger now.
  4. Since the drain is metal I wouldnt do anything with it either. Just run your waste water line extra long and place it in the sink or shower drain. As for plumbing the water supply, you can find plumbing parts that will split off the fittings you have there. Its a tee fitting that splits into a compression fitting that will work on your RO tubing. Easy to install and cost about 5 bucks at lowes or home depot.
  5. Oh ok, that was before I started coming to the meetings. Sorry I miss that one, Paul always has interesting insights on the hobby
  6. Lol I type too slow on my phone, I guess I was right.
  7. I remember what you are talking about, the suction balls were red and the tip of the rod was angled, can't really remember who it was that made them though. I'm leaning towards PaulB, he is always tinkering with stuff and sharing his designs with us. But I thought the person had them for sale at a meeting, I don't think Paul made the trip from New York to sell some turkey basters tho.
  8. Sorry to hear the bad news, luckily you were home at the time and had the chance to save some of the livestock, and get the clean up started right away.

  11. I would just give it some time, its new it will take awhile to break in. I have heard of people having to wait a few days even a few weeks for the skimmer to adjust. I wonder what it would do with you mixed a batch of new salt water in a bucket and placed the skimmer in that. That could tell you if its the skimmer, or if its the chemicals from the glue and/or filter socks.
  12. Very Nice, are the ponies camera shy?
  13. Came home today and found my heater on my QT cracked. My QT is a 29 gallon and was only about 1/2 filled with water, no live stock in the tank as this time, but I had it set up for some fish purchases I plan to make soon. Nothing was harmed except for the heater. Anyone want to take a guess at why my heater was busted?????????? MY CAT!!!!! Well I guess part of the blame is my own fault. My QT sits on the floor with the cords for the heater and powerhead running behind it on the floor as well. For whatever reason when I set it up I placed it a few inches from the wall. My kitten loves to run all around the room, and I have found her numerous times behind the tank, although she never bothered anything. My assumption is that the kitten was playing behind the tank and got tangled up in the cords. I found the heater pulled completely out of the water, but still in the tank above the water level. one of the 2 suction cups was still attached to the glass as well. I guess I'll drain it and move it against the wall now.
  14. I'm kinda on the fence with Chip on this one. It sounds like you bought used merchandise, if that's the case then I don't see a problem. It's reasonable to assume that a business selling used equipment would sell it as a final sale, no returns. I certainly wouldn't have bought something used without testing it out first, especially something I'm dropping alot of cash on. Did you buy something else as well? Even 2 new mag 12 pumps wouldn't cost $450. I hope you didn't get swindled on that as well. I'm not trying to point the blame at you, but from what I've read it sounds to me that the store didn't do anything wrong (at least with the sale, customer service is a whole different story). I'm sorry for your bad experience, I know i couldn't afford to lose 450 on bum equipment. One of the biggest reason new people leave the hobby is because if the expense it takes to have a good running system, hopefully this doesn't deter you from going forward. Everyone in this hobby has made a mistake in one fashion or another. My advice would be to take this experience as a lesson learned, and next time do some more research before making a large investment.
  15. It's the center brace that has broken? Or the perimeter brace? How bad is it bowing? It's a structural part of the tank, which means it could fail at any time. You can buy replacement pieces of trim, but from all that I've heard it's a pain in the .... You will aslo have to drain and empty the entire tank. There are some repairs you could do, but it depends where the break is.
  16. For the hole in the durso cap, start out small and slowly make it bigger by reaming out the hole. Be careful doing this with a 1/16 bit, it will snap easily.

  19. I like the way you have the rock work. With those pieces I think you have made the best of it. I dont think you need to go with acrylic rod, just some epoxy putty IMO. I made a similar arch in my tank with just epoxy and it holds up just fine.
  20. I have my 48" 6 bulb TEK fixture hanging from my ceiling with toggle bolts. They came with the hanging kit. I haven't had any problems with it, but my ceiling is sloped, dont know how much a difference that makes though.
  21. Black, makes the colors of your fish and corals stand out better. For a glass tank you can just about use any paint. Latex paint is easy to use and also remove from glass with just a simple razor blade if you ever want to change it. The finish of the paint doesnt matter, flat, satin, semi gloss will all look the same when you see it through the glass. Lots of people also use spray paint such as Krylon Fusion, many even use this on plumping that goes into the tank as well, its perfectly safe to use as long as you let it dry before you put it in any water. If you have an acrylic tank I would go with window tinting, you dont want to paint it.
  22. Check out the dedicated tank forum and look for a similar size set up. This will let you see what others keep in their tanks for livestock and what equipment they use.
  23. 1260 should be fine, but you could also get the 1262 and just dial it back if you need too.
  24. Glad to hear you have everything back on track and the fish are doing better. Lots of good info for setting up a good qt and hospital tanks.
