  1. Shocked I haven't heard anyone mention this yet, but I guess I'll say it..... You really should QT any new fish. Especially with them being from Petco( or an LFS really), they could have any number of things(ich, parasites...) that could spread to your tank and infect your current livestock. A simple QT set up would consist of a 10 gallon tank, small heater, and a HOB or sponge filter. This should probably cost you less then 50 bucks and could save lots of money and headaches in the future. The QT will give you time to observe your fish, check for diseases, behavior issues, and also to make sure they are eating or adjusting to a different type of food. There's no sense in removing then now, probably stressed enough at the moment, but just something to think about in the future.
  2. The shells will grow along with the snail, they will use up the calcium in the water the same way a coral would do.
  3. If it was glass I would say no way, drain it. With acrylic you may get away with it, I don't think I have ever heard of someone cracking or breaking their acrylic tank while drilling.
  4. Free food for your fish. My snails reproduce without any help at all from me, I've got a couple hundred now and I have NEVER seen an egg on my glass. Do a google search and you will find lots of images of snail eggs, usually white stringy trails on the glass. If you want to rear them, my only suggestion would be to try to scoop them out and place them in your refugium if you have one. Other wise they will most likely end up as fish food, my system didnt have any fish for awhile, and now only hosts a small pair of clowns.
  5. did you place all the sand in at once? usually adding that much new sand will cause a cycle, which could explain the lost of the fishes. Its usually best to just add a small amount over the course of a long time. Did you test your water after adding the sand? you would have noticed a spike in ammonia which is the start of the new cycle. With it being in there for 4 weeks already I dont think you would need any live sand to seed it, but it couldnt hurt either. Someone else can chime in about the pool sand, I dont have much experience with anything but aragonite. I know certains types of sand will contain lots of silicates which can lead to diatom bloom, but I dont know if pool sand is silicate based or not. As for the ceriths, I dont need any, I have over 300 in my 55 gallon. Those lil buggers reproduce like rabbits. I noticed a bunch of smallers on the glass the other day so I'm guessing its way over 300 now, a the last time I counted was 3 weeks ago. They are the only clean up crew I have, and other then having some film algae on my glass the tank is spotless.
  6. that's a steal, road trip?
  7. You can use rodi water to calibrate it to zero, but most people say its best to cailbrate it to 35ppt. If you just calibrate it to zero, it should still be pretty close, and not "way off" like the hydrometer seems to be. Im guessing the hydrometer is just way off, lots of things can cause them to very inaccurate, even a tiny air bubble can throw the reading way off.
  8. BUMP 39 to go????
  9. Surfers get stuck by urchins all the time, it's usually not that necessary to seek medical attention. Of course it always depends on the type of urchin, as some can be more venomous then others. Soaking the sting in pure white vinegar will help, a soak in very hot water for 30 mins or so is also supposed to help decrease the pain. If the spine is stuck inside your skin don't cut it out, leave it be.
  10. This Month's Topic Will Be...... Cell Phone Pics Submissions have been slow lately, so I decided to make an easy topic that everyone can participate in. I would assume just about everyone in the club has a tank and a cell phone, so this shouldnt be too hard. Most of the pictures are gonna be bad, so there's no reason to worry about your photography skills **cough cough DOUG cough**. Take a pic of whatever you want, doesnt matter what the subject of the pic is. I can fit 50 selections in a poll, thats a far cry from the numbers we have been getting lately, but I'd like to be closer to 50, then the 10 or less we have been getting lately. Remember the winners of POTM get $20 worth of free raffle tickets at the next meeting. I'll do a bonus this month, if we get more then 40 people to submit a pic this month, I'll chip in another $20 worth of free tickets along with the $20 of tickets the club always provides. GUIDELINES Submissions must be made by June 24 Photo size: At least 800 x 600 ONE submission per person. To be included in the voting, your submission must also have the following information: Submitters: Name, BBName Location: where it's taken (who's tank, ocean, etc) Camera Used: (if not available please say unknown) Subject: (what title/picture name/picture of)

  12. what grav was saying was just double the ammount of water, say 70 grams in 16 oz of water. that will make the solution half as potent as per the instructions, so you will then have to double the amount of the solution that you are dosing to get the same amount of calc.
  13. Welcome to the club. The mistakes are just a learning experience, we all make them.

  23. I think light shock would affect younger fish (fry), I doubt it could cause too much of a problem with an adult fish. Id look into getting a timer so that the fish have a schedule to adapt to. Just a cheap timer from walmart will do, they cost like 8 bucks. I think some people will agree with me that fish can sorta tell time, Their behavior changes when they know its almost feeding time, and they know when the lights are about to go out. Of course I might just be watching my tank too much and need to get out more. Do you run any type of moonlights? I keep my moonlights on 24/7 , I have my actinics come on an hour before my main lights come one, and then the actinic go off an hour after the main lights. The fish's color is probably normal, sometimes when the lights come on they will appear a pale grayish color, but as time goes by the color should come back. I've had this happen with my PJ cardnals and a yellow tang, all yellow fish, might just be a coincidence.
