kyle&amy December 29, 2017 December 29, 2017 All - first off Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Looking to see if anyone has any experience/knowledge on a good relatively inexpensive ($200 range or under) Indoor Scurity Camera or Monitor I could but to allow me to keep an eye on my tank while on vacation. I know the Apex can give me alerts but I want to be able to see how things look for piece of mind and also to be able to walk a neighbor (who has zero reef tank experience) through trying to fix something that may have gone wrong. Thanks in advance!! Tom
scott711 December 29, 2017 December 29, 2017 I did a ton of research on cameras (for security reason). I went with the Arlo's. I am very happy with them. Excellent video quality and you don't have to pay for a service like the nest cameras.
finaddict December 29, 2017 December 29, 2017 We just got a new puppy an we bought an indoor cam at Costco for 75 bucks. The video quality is not great and probably not good enough to see how corals are doing though I haven't tried that yet. Hard to beat the price and convenience of checking on the pup from anywhere using a call phone.
going deep December 30, 2017 December 30, 2017 check amazon prime. got a y1 pan/tilt/zoom for about $60 that I use to view my tank from my phone when away. Cost nothing to view.
kyle&amy January 3, 2018 Author January 3, 2018 All - THANKS for the great input and advise. I knew I would get a great response from the WAMAS Family!! I will update when I make my choice and purchase. Happy New Year!! Tom
TonyInVa January 3, 2018 January 3, 2018 Hey Tom, If you need any help, while you are on vacation, just let me know. I can send you my cell number if you don't have it. I any only 5 minutes away.
tygger January 3, 2018 January 3, 2018 Nest and most of the heavily marketed cameras are going to be the easiest to setup with the best customer support, but you are usually going to pay a monthly fee for cloud recording. I have a few old Foscam wireless ptz 8910s and 9281s years ago as my first cams. Wireless connectivity isn't reliable and many of the IR leds have burned out. My newer Foscam R2 is decent, but I've moved all of these wifi cams to areas that don't matter. They all have on board recording to an SD card, but I'm running a dedicated Blue Iris server for all of my cams. The areas that require reliability are all wired cams that record 24/7. Hikvision and Dahua are the brands that you want if quality and dependability are your number one priority. This is a solid wifi cam, but doesn't have pan, tilt, or zoom. It's a relabeled Hikivision. https://www.amazon.com/ANNKE-Impressive-Detection-Progressive-connection/dp/B01EL3Y1YM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514972648&sr=8-1&keywords=Annke+cube
tygger January 3, 2018 January 3, 2018 Forgot to mention I'm using that cam as a baby monitor for my toddler. It's a great value, but not as convenient as a real baby monitor for baby monitoring purposes. However, you can access it externally from your home network. Most dedicated baby monitors can't. I don't have direct experience with this one, but many enthusiasts say it's pretty good. https://m.ebay.com/itm/Dahua-IPC-A35-3MP-Support-Wi-Fi-SD-Card-Mic-Network-PT-IP-Camera-Baby-Monitor/201957009720?epid=577617393&hash=item2f05936938:g:iiUAAOSwWM9ZmrK9
smh254 January 5, 2018 January 5, 2018 I will be getting one of these cheep cameras when amazon gets back in stock. Looks like it would work well if you just point at your tank. I’ve only seen good review. https://youtu.be/zAkwkVmgx6k WyzeCam 1080p HD Wireless Smart Home Camera with Night Vision, 2-Way Audio, Free Cloud, for iOS and Android https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076H3SRXG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_rx8tAb2Y4NZGG Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
AlanM January 5, 2018 January 5, 2018 At MACNA 2017 Rich Ross had a cheap PTZ camera in his talk that he swore by, but his talk isn't online, just the Neptune tank, and I didn't write it down. I'm going to see if I can ask him what it is.
