Delphinus88 July 6, 2015 July 6, 2015 If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? What do you have now and does it work well? What skimmer would you avoid at all costs?
pizzaguy July 6, 2015 July 6, 2015 Atb Bubble king Reef octopus Bubble magus There are tons of great skimmers out there.
pizzaguy July 6, 2015 July 6, 2015 500 for 250 gallons might be a stretch. Find one used for that no problem
08can-am July 6, 2015 July 6, 2015 I use a reef octo 6000sss on my 300. 2 years so far no complaints Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk
Mattiejay6 July 6, 2015 July 6, 2015 I love the new NYOS Skimmer line. They are serious work horses and have amazing features! The Quantum 160 is rated up to a 250g tank. I think Ben A was using the size smaller on a 120 with amazing results.
Matt LeBaron July 7, 2015 July 7, 2015 Avast CS3 with Swabbie and skimmate locker. I have a CS1 with all of that on my 90G and it is awesome. Works fantastic and the swabbie and skimmate locker reduce my workload on caring for the skimmer to a monthly affair.
Coral Hind July 8, 2015 July 8, 2015 If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? A: I would get the Avast CS3. What do you have now and does it work well? A: I currently run a skimmerless nano system. What skimmer would you avoid at all costs? A: Anything that starts with "Coralife"
YHSublime July 8, 2015 July 8, 2015 Avast CS3 with Swabbie and skimmate locker. If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? A: I would get the Avast CS3. I would echo this^ It performed amazingly for me when I ran it, and I was very pleased. Plus, it's affordable, could really handle up to 500 gallons like it's rated for, and it's a local vendor and manufactured in the USA. Some say that when it pulls air, it sounds like a screeching bald eagle.

Reefer_Madness July 8, 2015 July 8, 2015 Also Vertex Omega has a good review also. +1 I love my Vertex
SunWyrm July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 I'd like to hijack and ask the same question for smaller systems. What's the best skimmer for <100g? The CS1?
s2nhle July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 Same thing, just smaller version. Vertex omega, aquamaxx cone, bubble king, atb.....
Coral Hind July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 The Vertex Omega and others just seem overpriced compared to a similar sized Avast unit. Plus the Avast unit is local and from my experience the Avast tech support is great.
Leishman July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 Avast all the way. I have had the Deltec and the Vertex, never again.
sethsolomon July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 Bubble magus nac 9 for sure! Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Jason Rhoads July 9, 2015 July 9, 2015 I am very happy with my Reef Octopus. I have personally ran it for around 5 years and got it second hand when I lived in NC. I would wager that it has been running for over 7-8 years with no trouble.
