Delphinus88 July 6, 2015 Share July 6, 2015 If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? What do you have now and does it work well? What skimmer would you avoid at all costs?

pizzaguy July 6, 2015 Share July 6, 2015 500 for 250 gallons might be a stretch. Find one used for that no problem

Mattiejay6 July 6, 2015 Share July 6, 2015 I love the new NYOS Skimmer line. They are serious work horses and have amazing features! The Quantum 160 is rated up to a 250g tank. I think Ben A was using the size smaller on a 120 with amazing results.
Matt LeBaron July 7, 2015 Share July 7, 2015 Avast CS3 with Swabbie and skimmate locker. I have a CS1 with all of that on my 90G and it is awesome. Works fantastic and the swabbie and skimmate locker reduce my workload on caring for the skimmer to a monthly affair.

Coral Hind July 8, 2015 Share July 8, 2015 If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? A: I would get the Avast CS3. What do you have now and does it work well? A: I currently run a skimmerless nano system. What skimmer would you avoid at all costs? A: Anything that starts with "Coralife"
YHSublime July 8, 2015 Share July 8, 2015 Avast CS3 with Swabbie and skimmate locker. If you were starting a ~250 gal mixed reef what skimmer would you buy? A: I would get the Avast CS3. I would echo this^ It performed amazingly for me when I ran it, and I was very pleased. Plus, it's affordable, could really handle up to 500 gallons like it's rated for, and it's a local vendor and manufactured in the USA. Some say that when it pulls air, it sounds like a screeching bald eagle.
Mattiejay6 July 8, 2015 Share July 8, 2015 You can buy a swabbie and retrofit to any skimmer

SunWyrm July 9, 2015 Share July 9, 2015 I'd like to hijack and ask the same question for smaller systems. What's the best skimmer for <100g? The CS1?

Coral Hind July 9, 2015 Share July 9, 2015 The Vertex Omega and others just seem overpriced compared to a similar sized Avast unit. Plus the Avast unit is local and from my experience the Avast tech support is great.

Jason Rhoads July 9, 2015 Share July 9, 2015 I am very happy with my Reef Octopus. I have personally ran it for around 5 years and got it second hand when I lived in NC. I would wager that it has been running for over 7-8 years with no trouble.
