Joshifer October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 Ok so this is pretty much pvc and zip ties. But he used it like this. I was thinking to cover it in silicone and rolling it around In sand or crushed coral or whatever, . It won't offer biological filtration but it'll fill that empty center. Will it eventually be covered in coraline? And look more natural or will it always look like a wierd sand tree? I'd drill holes in it too big holes. And attach GSP to it.
AlanM October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 (edited) Looks neat. Not silicone, though. I've heard of gorilla glue used. It foams when exposed to water too, so if your sand that you rolled it in was damp you'd get lots of texture. surf&turf October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 Well.. I think it would look ok, but it would be better to add some real rock to the system, since you don't have a sump. all the live rock you can add helps with filtration.

Just want something unique and odd looking. And tall. Plus something to keep myself busy with I like making stuff. I wonder if I can glue live rock to it. On each end make it look like a bonsai and attach gsp to each that'll look cool! And to keep it leveled I'd get a square piece of glass and attach it as a base and hide under the sand. Or acrylic whatever Edited October 25, 2013 by Joshifer

Joshifer October 25, 2013 Author October 25, 2013 I really really wanted a Greek column to get full of hair algae and coraline and other cool wavy stuff to look like something from Atlantis but all the pedestals I find contain lead. Or are made with plaster of Paris.
lutz123 October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 Looks cool. I can't wait to see it with sand on it. I'm always amazed at how realistic this stuff ends up. It will eventually populate with the live stuff from your other live rocks. The gel superglue is fine.

I was asking if its A bad idea to make one and cover it in sand.

Jason Rhoads October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 Get some portland cement, crushed coral, and rock salt. You can make anything you want, it will be porous, and it will look more natural. Look up GARF rock and read how it is done.
SunWyrm October 25, 2013 October 25, 2013 Also wrapping some gutterguard around it and zip-tying rocks would help. +1 on the pond foam too.

Use a box of damp sand, press your Plaster of Paris column into it to make a reverse image, and use the resulting impression as a mold to make an aragocrete column. Just be sure to let it dry thoroughly and then to cure an appropriately time before dumping it into your tank.
