Coral Hind March 1, 2013 Author March 1, 2013 Well it has been running for three full months. The red slime is gone now. I am currently making water in a 100g rubbermaid tub for my first water change. Nitrates are at 40, which is actually lower than what I thought it would be at since I really feed this tank a lot. The tank gets about a 4"x4" chunk of Jan's food a day, plus several table shrimp a week. The current stock list is: Koran Angelfish 5" Bi-color Angelfish 4" Yellow Tang 4" x 3 Vlamingii Tang 10" x 2 Pollenei Grouper 5" Miniatus Grouper 5" One Spot Foxface 5" Pinktail Trigger 4" Bluehead Wrasse 5" Melanurus Wrasse 5" Lunar Wrasse 4" Cleaner Wrasse 2" Aussie Harlequin Tusk 7" Snowflake Eel 20" Engineer Goby 6" Blue Velvet Damsel 3" Unknown Damsel 5" Spanish Hogfish 3"
Coral Hind March 1, 2013 Author March 1, 2013 I added a pair of blue dot stingrays a few weeks ago. They were beautiful, with about a 6" disc and with the tail they were well about 14" long. The angelfish kept picking at them but they didn't seem to be taking bites or chunks out of them. They seemed to be eating the slime off of them. The stingrays started hiding more under the rocks to avoid the angels so I decided to pull them and find them a new home. Here is a short iphone video I took. Also, the unidentified damsel can be seen at the 5 to 7 second mark behind the tusk fish. It's dark with a slightly yellow tail. I thought it might be a yellow tail damsel but I've never seen one this large and it seems to have grown some since I got it last month. If you know what it might be send me a PM. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PFLw0IcX2w
Coral Hind March 2, 2013 Author March 2, 2013 Yes, they did stir the sand up so there were times when the tank would be a little cloudy.
L8 2 RISE March 3, 2013 March 3, 2013 Pretty sure the damsel is an adult yellow black stripe damsel neoglyphidodon nigroris. Just out of curiosity, where did you get him from? They're gorgeous as juveniles but grow EXTREMELY quickly to be huge and not so attractive. Seriously, fastest growing fish I've ever seen. I added a few to my high school's tank back when that was up without realizing that... Something you might consider, in one of our very large predator tanks we added a large hermit crab (conch shell sized, about 8-10 in). It is the sole clean up crew in the tank because anything else will be eaten but it does an INCREDIBLE job of keeping the sandbed clean and white. It sifts through the sand as it moves around the tank, probably sifting over the whole sandbed 4-5 times a day.
marinap March 3, 2013 March 3, 2013 Cool video, thanks for sharing. Looks like fish are thriving. Great job!
Coral Hind March 3, 2013 Author March 3, 2013 Just out of curiosity, where did you get him from? Nice job on the ID!! I got him from zygote2k. He got into a nasty fight with the Harlequin Tusk and had a big chunk of flesh taken out off him but he has healed up nicely. One of the Tusk fish's fangs was pulled out during the fight. It took about two weeks for it to grow back fully.
Coral Hind April 1, 2013 Author April 1, 2013 how are things looking nowadays, sir? following along! Everything is going along nicely. I did pull out the large snowflake eel and donated it to a reefer with a dedicated eel tank. I'm sure it is much happier there. It was very hard to feed it without having the other large meat eaters taking food right out of his mouth. It had also had a red coris and a yellow coris wrasse for dinner, both about 4" in size, so it had to go before it tried to eat any other wrasses. I recently added a 4" Majestic Angelfish and a 3" Powder Blue Tang to the tank. Here is a pic from when they were in QT.
monkiboy April 1, 2013 April 1, 2013 man, all that room for such great-looking fish. that's great! glad you're qt'ing. did you prophylactically treat either the powder or the angel in that shot? any bullying with your current stock list?
Coral Hind April 1, 2013 Author April 1, 2013 Treated with prazi and then cupramine. The Koran did chase the Majestic at first but by day three that stopped. The other tangs didn't bother the new Powder Blue at all but the Miniatus grouper did chase him out of every rock he tried to hide in. The biggest aggression in the tank now comes from the Harlequin Tusk and Miniatus Grouper. The tusk is the boss now and if the grouper gets near him the tusk goes after him. I guess he got tired of the grouper stealing food right out of his mouth. Here is a recent FTS.
monkiboy April 1, 2013 April 1, 2013 awesome. that's my general for almost all livestock and then for particular fish prone to other diseases treat accordingly. i was just going to ask about the other angel - that's great they have gotten along now. what size QT are you able to use for that angel and powder. i have a 3' long but am wondering if i need to go to a 4' for some of the larger fish to keep them less stressed or not. how large are your freshwater and saltwater vats/containers? and in one of your photos i noticed a 2x4 multi tank stand. is this your QT setup? any pictures of this you can post? pardon all the questions - just trying to get ideas for my build. thanks!
Der ABT April 1, 2013 April 1, 2013 i think his qt is a 300g......j/k..... any updated shots of the tank...glad everything seems to be comign along nicely
Coral Hind April 7, 2013 Author April 7, 2013 what size QT are you able to use for that angel and powder. i have a 3' long but am wondering if i need to go to a 4' for some of the larger fish to keep them less stressed or not.how large are your freshwater and saltwater vats/containers? and in one of your photos i noticed a 2x4 multi tank stand. is this your QT setup? any pictures of this you can post? I have a 75g and three 40g breeders I use as QT. Now that the system is kind of stocked I will probably remove the three 40g breeders and just keep the 75g. For freshwater I have a 15g barrel. When I need to make a water change I have a 100g Rubbermaid tub stored outside I bring into the garage to use. I have only done one water change so far.
Coral Hind April 7, 2013 Author April 7, 2013 I removed about 100lbs of rock last night. The wife actually got into the tank with her snorkel on to move things around. Here is our cat that we got from Flowerseller two years ago.
sachabballi reef April 7, 2013 April 7, 2013 Please tell me you took a pic of her in the tank getting the rock out.....so hysterical Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
pizzaguy April 7, 2013 April 7, 2013 Omg. That is hilarious. I have officially seen it all now. Awesome tank.
