  1. So I am thinking of starting a frag tank in a small 10 gallon I have. What do I need ? Small pump for flow, heater, light. What about keeping nitrates in check ? Can I not use a skimmer and get away with constant water changes, like once a week ? Or are Nitrates not even an issue since there are no fishes ? Am I correct that you don't need to cycle a frag tank since there is no LR ? Can I also use this 10 gallon as a QT tank ? I am assuming that fish disease are not contagious to corals.
  2. When I consolidated my 3 fish tanks into one new 156, I thought that since every one has a new much bigger home, they would get along. My Maroon clown disagreed. It was in a 50G and my black and white Ocellaris, of the similar size, was in a 40G. The Maroon did not give the Ocellaris any chance from day one, The Ocellaris ended up hiding at the top corner of the tank. The final straw was when the Ocellaris ended up in the overflow. We had to put him in another that where he now lives with another b/w. They lay eggs at least once a month but the babies never make it even though those 2 clowns are the only fishes in the tank. Oh, that consolidation idea.. I now have 4 tanks and am thinking of adding a frag tank. So if you are looking for an excuse to possible start another tank and your finance is not too keen on another tank .......
  3. Did you do any thing special to help with the healing ?
  4. My Sailfin also has HLLE. A varied diet seems to have halted the spread of HLLE. It is just around his head. It has been months since the HLLE marks stopped getting worse. It has also grown larger so it is not as obvious, however, it is still there. Is there anything that can be done to cure HLLE ? i.e. make the marks go away ?
  5. Thanks ! Good thing I viewed your tank build thread. I did not know the boxes they come in are that big. I was going to pickup my order in a convertible ! I am going to need my SUV for sure.
  6. I sure would like to see you tank. Your tank built has 35 pages, do you know what page pictures of the rock is ? Or date range ? Thanks Mike
  7. How long have you had the Vida in your 150g ? What did you get ? I am thinking of the Grotto for my 55G, Bonsai for my 16G and Branch for my 156G.
  8. I am considering adding Vida Rocks ( http://cerameco.com/ ) to my systems. They are not cheap but they look real good. The manufacturer claims that it will behave just like live rock once it gets colonized. Has anyone had experience with these in their system ? Oh, if you are interested, there is a group buy for this going on with a date line of Jan 20.
  9. I have literally countless BTAs; all from a single BTA I bought about 10 years ago. Ever since it started spitting like crazy about 5 years ago, I have never feed any of them. In fact I actually try not to get any food near them ! Still they have grown like crazy and continue to split.
  10. The clown in this has 2 Anemones in its tank. I have a tank with many Anemones and the pair of Black Ocellaris clowns in it never exhibits this behavior so I don't know if the presence of an Anemone is tied to this. These clowns also lay eggs every week or so.
  11. So the only Maroon clowns exhibit this behavior ?
  12. It's tail is itchy
  13. I have never synced them. Just set them all individually at 80. I also don't trust the thermostat on heaters so I have a Ranco provide the temp of the tank. I know, that's a real expansive thermometer
  14. To prevent a defective heater from cooking my 200G of water, I have multiple smaller heaters instead of one big one.
  15. ok, forget what I a said about temps, looks like it died of natural causes -> old age !
  16. I assume your garage has a garage door so I don't think it would be below freezing, tonight being a possible exception. Also, would not the heated tank water made a difference ?
  17. +1 for Centreville aquarium. I've been a frequent customer for over 15 years; not too many mom and pop LFS have been around that long. You can get live blood worms for your marine fishes when you are there too. They get them on Tuesday evening and often sell out by the weekend. If you really want to travel, Vienna Aquarian has a large fresh water selection too, at least they did when they were in Vienna. Vienna Aquarium is now in Leesburg ( http://viennaaquariumpets.com/) .... Just like the Big 10 has... how many schools ?
  18. Glad you seem to have recovered from your disaster. Do you have any idea why happened in the first place ? Spontaneous cracking of a huge tank like this is worrisome.
  19. What about heating the clean water ? I use IO 160G buckets for store clean water, using 2 aquarium heaters to head 2 buckets before using them. This takes time, making me lazier to change water in winter. For those who use a huge storage container, do you use a aquarium heater ? I was wondering if there is a simple commercial water heater that will heat cold water much faster than an aquarium heater.
  20. Is there a Nitrate level that is too high for fishes ?

  24. Does the rate of flow through the biopellets make a big difference ? i.e. bio pellets may not work if the rate of flow through the reactor is too fast. I have not been able to reduced my Nitrates and I've tried months of BRS biopellets and now I am on the 3rd week of Seachem's deNitrate. Seachem's label is suggesting that the pump used should not be more than 50GPH. I know my maxijet has a much higher GPH flow.
