  1. Since I started a frag tank recently, I too have been looking for things to attach zoas, etc to. I go to the beach alot. I have been picking up shell pieces that I glue together to look like "frag plugs" I try to get shell pieces that are porous and have lots of holes in them. Are there any reasons why using shell, etc from the beach may not be a good idea ?
  2. Thanks for all the responses. It is still alive but clearly not doing well. It just stays at the bottom and has no interest in feeding. When healthy, will be begging for food when not fed for 1 day. This morning it was leaning against a rock I would be surprised if it makes it. When you research feeding of lion fishes, there is the line of thought that suggest that if you feed it too much it will just stop feeding one day. Almost sounds just like what is happening to mine. The premise for this is that Lion are predators in the wild that only hunt once a week for food. Some suggest for this reason they should not be fed more than once a week. Constant feeding makes it lose this instinct and .... don't know if I buy it .
  3. There is a yellow tang in this 55G and it is behaving normally. Other critters are large snails, BTAs and urchins, all ok. Being a fish only tank with no corals, I don't pay attention to water parameters as closely, I should check them tonight. This Lion gets enough to eat, it knows to stop when it is full -> usually 1 or 2 small pieces ( small enough for it to inhale it whole) of chopped up shrimp would do that. It also gets frozen krill and mysis. Fed no more than once in 2 days.
  4. Treat it for what ?
  5. Having had this happen one time too many is why I now have a egg crate cutting covering my overflows. I was lucky and persistent enough to catch the fish before it died, with a small and long net.
  6. I have a sick Fuzzy Dwarf Lion fish. At least I think it is sick. It did have one eye partly cloudy about 2 weeks ago, treated that we Epsom salt, has been ok for the last week. Problem is that it usually begs for food when someone approaches the tank when it has not been fed for over 1 day. We try our best not to feed it more than once in 2 days as I read that is it not good to keep feeding them daily. Now it is just hanging at the bottom of the tank and clearly not as active. It normally only behaves this way when it has just been fed. It looks ok, i.e. fins extended, eyes no longer cloudy. Any idea what might be causing this behavior ? Advise appreciated. We have had it for almost 2 years.
  7. I use the Marineland lights on all my tanks. The cheapest place to get them is PetSolutions. For some reason, they are alot cheaper there. I am also very impressed by the "warranty". Once my 48" to 60" transformer went bad, I called them (Marineland) and was told that they were out of stock for that particular item at that time. To keep my reef lighted, they shipped me 2 brand new 24" to 36" ones for free while I wait for the transformer to be in stock. Later the also shipped me the replacement transformer for free. Yes, I ended up with my transformer replaced and 2 new lights, at no cost. That's what i call customer service !

  9. Why ? What type of corals don't do as well with these LEDs ?
  10. Reading this got me wondering how much LFS that do maintenance would charge. Wouldn't the cost be part of moving expenses and be tax deductible ? Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
  11. In my fight to lower Ntrates, I have been using Seachem's de*nitrate. I having been running it for over 3 months now and it does not seem to have made a difference. I a wondering if the rate of flow thru my reactor is way too fast. I have the reactor using a Maxijet. The label ( below ) calls for flow not to exceed 50GPH. I did read this when I first started uing it but did not have any pump with that low of a rating. Do any of you use such slow rate of flows for your reactors ? Is this why my nitrates are not being lowered ?

  13. I have an old RODI unit that I no longer use. Is it is simple as I think it is to turn this into a GRO & Carbon Reactor, as show below ?

  17. Any recommendations for an Android app to record tank parameters ? I would like to get one that logs and allows for trending. I have tried "Coral Reef Parameters" but it just gives you info about reef parameters. A Journal is the only thing in it that you can enter stuff. Paid for the "Pro" but does help much "Aquatic Log" is free but does not have a graph function.
  18. Does anyone have a shifting sand star fish in their aggressive tank ? Should be safe with a Lion, right ?
  19. No, my QT and DT tanks are totally separate. Maybe your comment was meant for dread240, he seems to have his QT connected to his DT, kind of does not make sense to me too.
  20. Do the usual rule of acclimatization apply when you move a fish from QT to the DT ? This is a new fish from a LFS so QT was just for observation of possible diseases. . The salinity in my QT and DT are the same, so is the temp. I am wondering if it would be less stressful for the QT fish to go straight to the DT, versus being transferred via another container. For those that QT fishes, what's your practice ?
  21. You are correct Tom ! I bought a CR2032 and it works fine ! Thanks
  22. Here's the TDS I've tried a CR 2025 but nothing happens. Is there a reset or on/off ?
