  1. Is this true? Higher alkalinity leads to better coraline growth? Please advise. This fits in with a project I am doing. Thx in advance.
  2. I'm nearby, drop me a pm and let me know when you want to do it. I also have a few bits, as well. Thx Ross
  3. Really..? Just throw a raw shrimp or so in the tank? Cool.
  4. I can send you a pict of how i did mine, if desired. I built a square out of 1x2's and then counter-opposed them...one side had a 24" and a 12" and the other had a 12" and a 24." It's a new tank so not sure if I'll leave it that way but was my idea at the time. Thx
  5. Yep, my work blocks youtube. They take the position I should be working, not hanging out on WAMAS
  6. I have always heard doing this can cause a nitrate surge or algae bloom or some such...Not sure of my terminology but thought there was some reason to avoid this. Thx
  7. I am not sure I understand what you are saying...seems like from your words and the pictures that you are: 1. stirring up everything one to many times 2. have two temporary "diatom" filters hooked up pulling the water thru 3. finally "rinsing" everything off with a pump or powerhead after to get any residual muck that might have settled... That about it? Question: Are you stilling running pumps, sumps, and powerheads while doing this? Or are the temporarily turned off. Sounds pretty cool, and I have read the rest of your posts with interest. Let us know. Thx
  8. I found this link some time ago on another site. Maybe it will help. Discusses floor and weight distribution. http://www.african-c...m/Structure.htm
  9. Personally I think the pics look great. My best, first, suggestion would be to relax and enjoy your tank. You'll make a few mistakes but you'll overcome them. Look up some of the parameter charts on the web and see how you look. I actually don't test (nor change water) all that much. The smaller tank makes it more necessary for you to monitor but you seem to be doing fine. Keep up the good work.
  10. Tell us what you are trying to get accomplished..just wanting to set up a 20g tank with a small bulkhead? Or do you have bigger plans? If you think you'll grow in the hobby, you should do it yourself, it's not hard and then you'll know how. If not, and you just want to do a small tank, then I'll let you come out and use mine. I drilled a 20 for a frag tank, installed a 1 inch bulkhead (I think.) It will take you longer to drive to Gaithersburg than it will to drill the tank but I'm happy to help. LMK
  11. I'd use toggle bolts and if possible some little covers to cover the larger hole you have to make. If no covers are available you could take big washers, paint them white to match. Im always scared of the anchor-only designs
  12. you don't say what size you want. Let us know.
  13. Don't they eat your snails? Or do you use crabs instead of snails? Thx
  14. Thank you all for your advice. The leak is small, isn't a constant drip, and is dripping down the stand (not one of the vertical seams.) I believe I'll push the new tank forward. How effective is that bottle bacteria stuff? It says apply and buy fish, but I am quite skeptical that's true.
  15. My 75 g DT appears to have developed a slow leak along the bottom, in the back. For some reason, which I'll be watching, it seems to only do it some of the time. Advice is desired and will be welcomed. My second question is I am building a new tank right beside it but it has new sand, some of the water from my last water change, and it just now coming up. Has not cycled even a little bit. Do I dare move the contents of my maybe leaky tank over to this new tank? The DT is now year old and really looking good.and I hate to jeopardize it in a move. Thanks WAMAS for your help. Ross
  16. Dave, I'm in Gaithersburg and a fan of the Reef Angel. No local vendors but you'd be welcome to stop by here and see what I'm doing with it. I've also got a couple of pdf's I can send you if you'd like. Thx
  17. I was under the impression these lights cannot be managed by a controller (other than on and off.) Thx
  18. I recently changed my filters, resin, etc. on my RODI unit and was so proud to have my water back into spec, re-installed it under the sink and immediately went to making water; happy as I could be... A couple of days later I noticed the floor board under my sink was soaked; what had gone wrong? Upon pulling it back out and taking a closer look I discovered that several of my connectors had developed leaks, went bad, perhaps I didn't re-tighten, etc. Make sure that when you re-assemble your unit you spend a few minutes just watching it make water, checking connections, both under pressure and not, to see if anything leaks. I ended up replacing two of the older connectors on the unit and am now running fans trying to dry out the board under my sink. A word to the wise... Thanks WAMAS
  19. one poster above mentioned "bird-netting." What did they mean by that? Black mesh screen? Or something else?
  20. I have to admit I had no idea what an aquarium manifold was...until I googled it. I still don't know, but the way I've built everything else is to copy someone else's. Perhaps others can help.
  21. Can any of their models be dimmed with a controller? Without modding, I mean? Thx in advance,
  22. I have one Power Compact Unit and one T5 2 bulb unit on my 75. I got both used (cheap) because I just won't pull the trigger on any kind of LED. If you are going to spend ANY kind of real money on lights go ahead and do LED. They will last a way long time and you will ultimately be happier.
