  1. I, too, am a fan of the Reef Angel. Depending on what you want to monitor the controller works fantastically. It costs less than the other products but does require some configuration and programming to do some of the specialized options. I do some programming if you need the help and would be happy to show you what I doing. Check out my web site for some screen shots and ideas for some of the things available. Thx Ross
  2. There is much discussion about a sale starting at Petco in the next few days, Tanks for $1 gallon and they probably sell stands and everything else. Oughta save you a lot of money.
  3. My son and I are dinking with writing a java program to compute this but wondered about an additional data point...width of separation. Is there any data on this? How far apart these lights want to be? Is there any correlation to this datapoint with measure of light beamed down into the tank? If I want a certain PAR reading could I affect that by changing width and number of bulbs thx
  4. They have done them in the past but stop at a certain size. Let us all know. thx
  5. I continue to hear good things since asking this question. My current worry is "how much is enough?" I have a 75g and want a fixture that will fully cover it. Is that the 36 bulb? The 72? Thx in advance.
  6. These are all good ideas. I went to Costco and got two of those under chair plastic mats that you put on carpet to make your chair easily to slide around. Looks pretty neat on the carpet, gives you a good chance to grab any water when it spills. They were $20 each
  7. I like the garage wall idea, with sump, etc. in the garage as stated. The one thing I would mention that I did was run a water line out of the utility into the garage and over to the sump to facilitate water change. If you had access to a drain close to the sump even better. Thx and good luck. Roscoe
  8. In my opinion, I think you should take a look at the Reef Angel line of aquarium controllers. For a long time I wanted the Neptune but kept getting pushed away by price. I have been able to do everything I wanted with Reef Angel and then some. Let me know if I can help. Thanks
  9. Thinking about an LED build

  10. Many of us have had dealings with Leroy on the past, I'm sure both good and wonderful, as well as frustrating. I stopped by their website tonite to see what was new and learned this news. Leroy was somewhat of a force in reefing and he will be missed. As they said on his site, " Keep his family in your prayers."
  11. In my mind, a primary issue is finding a sump that will still fit the glass baffles she had cut. I had the same problem with my last tank, wanted to use a 55g and it was too tall. I went with a 40 breeder but wasn't trying to deal with glass baffles. Would a 40 long work?
  12. Welcome to WAMAS. I have been a member for over a year and have really enjoyed it. You'll receive lots of help fromt he folks here. Just a note, update your profile with your approximate location so folks will know where you are. To your questions, of which I only have positions on a few...I am a pro-sump, pro-drilled-type overflow tank builder. There is lots of reference to the success of hang-on back filters, protein skimmers, etc., but your got some big tanks and in my opinion you're gonna need some big flow. One of the best parts about WAMAS, however, is the variety of experience; so you'll probably hear from a bunch of us. Good luck.
  13. really cool! Please share with us the parts list and where you got everything. THX
  14. Glad to know there is another reefer in my area. Welcome aboard.
  15. Found a link on another list and wondered if anyone here has any experience with them. I would appreciate if somebody with experience building these things would take alook and let us know. They look inexpensive but must be something I'm missing. Thx in advance.
  16. Can't PM I'd take the light, maybe a few other things. Traveling until Wednesday tho. Could come out Saturday morning. LMK Ros
  17. I have done paper and plastic...all work well. Dollar store has small ones for a dollar, Walmart has many different ones for about $4 in the automotive section. Thx
  18. Never thought about that as an issue... My problem with external pumps is that they have to be plumbed so they can be "primed" before they will pump. I learned this meant they have to be sitting in the water flow (water inside the pump) before they will pull. I was trying to build a water change system that required the pump to pull water up and out of my sump...had to change my design. Other than that, I think they are more noisy than internal pumps. Thx
  19. That's an internal pump, yes? I wanted to.use external pumps but keep getting stuck on having to prime the pump.
  20. I keep seeing references to folks making stuff out of ABS plastic but have no idea where to get it...can you help? I need to build a few hanger sort of things to hold float valves, etc. thx in advance
  21. Where is Aspen Hill? I am in Gaithersburg (actually MV.) You could come see what I've done and I'll let you waste a little PVC and glue. Like the previous poster said, this stuff is cheap and just don't be afraid to make a few mistakes. Ross
  22. I agree regarding loss of flow with a strainer because of algae growth, it happened to me. My other issue with it, however, was loss of tank real estate. That 45 and strainer took up at least 2-3 inches both vertically and horizontally. my new tank uses a return from glass holes.com. Like it much better. thx
  23. I use the SeaFlor Special Grade Reef Sand, am not familiar with the other brands. I have been pleased with it so far. How are the others proced comparatively? Thx
  24. I calculate this unit to be about 16 inches long by 8 inches deep. How big a tank is that supposed to support? Doesn't seem like I could put over my 75 or is there something I don't understand. Thx
  25. I read somewhere that most 29's are tempered. Don't remember where but think I was googling tank sizes and measurements. Thx
