gmerek2 February 28, 2014 February 28, 2014 My fish eat their own poop and dart for it just as fast as if I were to put fresh food in. GROSS!!! They embarrass me in front of my guests!! Are they starving? Do they do this in the wild? Anyone else have this problem? I need to get to the bottom of this matter.
Coral Hind February 28, 2014 February 28, 2014 My fish do it also and they are anything but starved as I feed my tank a lot. I have seen it happen in the wild while diving. Normally smaller fish eating larger fish's waste. I guess since their digestive system is not the best there is some nutrition still left in recycled waste.

zygote2k March 1, 2014 March 1, 2014 It's not that their digestive tracts are not very good, it's that they are relatively short. Much of the food passes through the fish undigested and other fish eat it because it's much easier to digest.
Jon Lazar March 1, 2014 March 1, 2014 At greater ocean depths, there are whole food chains based on poo falling from shallower depths. IIRC, fish only extract about 10 percent of the nutrients from what they eat, like Zygote mentioned. So poo gets eaten over and over. Yum.
