YHSublime March 21, 2014 March 21, 2014 Dang, bummer on the Apex! Are tanks are similar in the sense that our po4 levels are identical, and I also get red slime in my low flow areas, and my acros all look really colorful. I don't have your bio-load, or water volume, but I saw in your video that I feed the same for about a quarter of the fish I've cut back on the amount I feed and still feed just as often, and I'm slowly seeing results with heavy skimming (which I know you're already doing...) I just did a 2 day blackout, and now a reduced photo period, and I've gotten rid of any and all algae. My rocks look like they are almost brand new, it's a little scary. I'm curious to know how long your po4 has been at that level, and if your response was just jacking up the flow? I've been worried about it, and even had a thread about it earlier, but it seems that maybe I can keep on keeping on.

Called them Thursday during the day and no one picked up. Emailed and get a generic response late friday. Responded and tried calling and no response. I like the apex but seriously considering getting something else. Pretty bad service for essentially an overpriced timer. If I didn't travel so much, I'd probably not get a replacement. My po4 was in the 0.3-0.4 range for about a year. Last I checked, it was 0.15. I feed what I fed about 3-4 times a day in the main tank, with about 1/3 that much 1-2 times a day in the lps tank (small fish). I essentially feed 8 cube equivalents between the two tanks and the frag tank (plus 1 mussel per day). I have a large skimmer and also run chaeto and an ATS. I do ~30-50 gallon water changes weekly when I remember. I think that if I was a little more aggressive with water changes and cut back feeding a little (which will happen once I get this regal angel eating), the p04 should drop into a range I'd prefer (0.05-0.08). I doubt I'll ever be in the "ideal" range with my combination of husbandry practices, feeding, and reluctance to use biopellets/gfo but if I can get a little lower, I think growth and color will pick up.
sachabballi reef March 22, 2014 March 22, 2014 i would post on their forum on RC...I have gotten rather fast responses from them there believe it or not. How long have you had? You may also be able to go back to where you bought it and have them deal with it if its still within a reasonable period of time
roni March 23, 2014 Author March 23, 2014 Jenn, Thanks so much for the suggestion. Posted on their forum and got a response that worked from another member tonight. Appreciate it. The solution was to switch ports on from the eb8 to the base unit. Not sure why a port would stop working all of a sudden and I'll probably have to look to pick up another eb8 at some point in case that's the problem.
sachabballi reef March 23, 2014 March 23, 2014 Well thats the great thing about the Apex actually....there are so many talented users across the world that an answer can sometimes be right at your fingertips and not from them directly (silver lining? ) I have dealt with Tunze and ecotech directly and they are fantastic..... Glad it is an easy fix...but depending on how long you have had it maybe you can send it back to them? I just had to buy another 4 and 8 and bought them using amazon prime...a few dollars cheaper and got to me in 2 days

It's one of the pluses of having so many computer savvy people in the hobby. I'm definitely not one of those people Going to get a backup unit at some point either way and send mine in to get looked at. Hopefully an easy fix and I'll have a backup. Never thought about using amazon for reef stuff but great idea. I use them for everything else already so why not ?

Never thought about using amazon for reef stuff but great idea. I use them for everything else already so why not ? I get my money's worth out of my prime membership for sure.....9 times out of 10 no matter what it is I need I will just order it from there on prime and have it in 2 days or less ....I literally do ALL my xmas shopping on there...I never step in a mall LOL...I hate shopping in stores...if you can think of it, they have it...i even get bunny treats on there..thats how random it is. I keep my phos around .05 as well and my nitrates at 5 or so...I think I get the best color and growth when my tank is at that combination...i never strive for zero...and i feed heavy and a few times a day. I just try to do a big water change every single week...I haven't tested in so long I can't even tell you what my parameters are anymore..the apex keeps every thing so rock solid I would be completely lost with out it at this point...not a good thing I suppose LOL...but I can tell visually if something is off as I study the tank and every nook and cranny every single day...
Der ABT May 19, 2014 May 19, 2014 He is in New Baby mode i believe hopefully he will post up soon though.

roni June 24, 2014 Author June 24, 2014 (edited) sorry, tank stuff has been on hold with work and family. I got a new frag which is requiring a lot of upkeep. I'm just trying to keep things alive in the interim. It's been fun but hectic. I'm hoping the tank will become a source of fun again but right now it's difficult just doing standard maintenance. I think I'll probably cut back the tanks to just the main 270...anyone want some large colonies of high end zoos ? Edited June 24, 2014 by roni

Thank you congrat!!!.. you need super glue for that frag!!! LOL. Thanks, surprisingly the frag is able to hold her head up now. No glue, though I may consider it when she gets mobile. Congrats! And yes! Thanks, Isaac, I'll shoot you a pm before I list it when I get ready to break down.

Der ABT June 25, 2014 June 25, 2014 Aw man she is cute....glad to hear your making it thur the first weeks.....Im sure Zara is proud of her new sister. Hopefully Mom is doing great. We need a mermaid shot...oh wait thats for build threads
roni July 20, 2014 Author July 20, 2014 Evan, I'm not sure mom would be happy if I made my girls swim in the tank quick video showing a couple newish fish and my new acclimation box, courtesy of the folks at aquabox
DuffyGeos July 20, 2014 July 20, 2014 Very pretty Regal! One of my favorite fish, hope to get one someday. Also love the Idol! That acclimation box is great, you said 20g, but what are the total dim? Thx
roni July 20, 2014 Author July 20, 2014 Thanks, yeah, the regal is one of my favorite fish in the tank. This one has been in the frag tank for 5 months, trying to get it to take frozen. I actually had the box built specifically for it since my old elite aquatics one was a little small to keep a regal for an extended period. the box is 14 x 14 x 24"
