  1. I wouldn't go 5 days without feeding either. The 5 days without light would be fine for the tank, but I'm not sure how much that would help with reducing algae. If it were cyano, then no lights would help. Algae issues are annoying, but turning off the lights for an extended amount of time is only a temporary fix. Need to find the source of the issue. Good luck
  2. The way the gyres are suppose to work is by creating a "gyre" in the tank, so the bottom should be getting a proportionate amount of flow as the top. Are you saying that even at 100%, there's not enough flow at the bottom or that you can't turn it up to 100% without stirring up the sand?
  3. I don't have any experience with DC pumps for the skimmer, but its supposed to provide more flexibility in varying conditions. You can adjust the pump speed to raise or lower the water level and air flow into skimmer. It might also run quieter, but I'm not sure if the majority of the available DC pumps are very reliable. If you're building your sump now, you have the ability to setup the skimmer section to match the equipment perfectly, so in the end it may not make any difference. I would get the biggest/best skimmer you could fit so you don't second guess yourself in the future and end up wasting money upgrading.
  4. I usually just rinse with a jet spray in the utility sink and wring a few times... then let it soak in either bleach or vinegar overnight. Then rinse it the next day and let dry.
  5. Go with the bigger one. It'll give you more flexibility. If it's too much, you could always skim dryer.
  6. There's definitely hope for the tank. When I neglected mine over the course of a year or so, I had tons of bubble algae. I removed what I could by hand and even popped a bunch under water by accident. I never had any luck with emerald crabs, but I started doing water regular water changes, got the fuge up and running again, and kept excess nutrients to a minimum by not over feeding. Over time, they disappeared.
  7. Something like this will work. This one is 7x7". https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JT3VDB4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0mJKzbQF114CE
  8. Sorry hear. I haven't experienced anything like that. Hopefully it's just minor and heals quickly. Keep us posted and good luck.
  9. Congrats on the new addition. When we had our first, I barely had any free time or energy. What little I did have, I didn't want to spend it on the tank. Not trying to discourage you, but just be sure you're up to the task.
  10. Glad this was posted here because I didn't think much of the article when I first read it. The first hand incidents by club members has definitely made me more cautious. Here's the link for future reference: http://wamas.org/forums/topic/69535-josh-roberts-decadence-palytoxin/?hl=decadence
  11. What are you guys using as an alternative?
  12. Yep,new filter socks will do that. I usually soak with vinegar/water before first use to prevent the crazy foaming.
  13. lol. I had one too many incidences of fish jumping out so now I always use egg crate on top.
  14. I might be in Richmond next weekend. Are there any LFS worth visiting in that area? Thanks
