  1. Thanks Chuck. My updates here are lagging behind by a few months.
  2. What are you trying to treat? If you think it's bacterial, most of the time people combine furan-2 with other antibiotics (like kanaplex or metroplex) in order to get at the widest spectrum of bacteria. But to answer your question about furan-2 dosing, if 1 packet is for 10 gallons, then for 5 gallons, use 1/2 packet. API's instructions for the bulk furan-2 seems to imply that 1 packet is 1/2 teaspoon (since they say to dose 1 teaspoon for 20 gallons). You can easily confirm this when emptying out the contents of the packet. So for 5 gallons, maybe 1/4 teaspoon? https://www.apifishcare.com/product.php?p=details&id=634 Here's some good reading about antibiotics: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/antibiotics.283711/ The only deviation from the instructions on the label is to treat for 10 consecutive days.
  3. If it is ammonia burn, you can try treating with methylene blue: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/methylene-blue.257467/ www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumMedication3.html#methylene_blue
  4. Picked up a used Avast ATO (for apex) and a used avast swabbie. Then I also picked up a new avast skimmate locker (the version for buckets as I did not need the nice acrylic container and the bucket version was the cheapest option) and the avast apex breakout box. It would take a long time to fill 5-gallons of skimmate, so I did find a smaller semi-translucent bucket (I think it's 3 gallons) that had the same lid size as a 5-gallon bucket. One problem I encountered was that I only had one I/O port available on my apex. Justin at Avast was able to help me convert the apex connector on my ATO to bare wire. So I used the I/O port on the apex for the breakout box, which has the ATO, skimmate locker, and a float switch from my ATO reservoir plugged into.
  5. Powerheads are 2 jebao rw-8s. Lighting is 2 Build My LED 20,000K 48" lights from my previous tank. I have them overlapping in the middle since the 125g is 72" long. Bought a Vertex Omega 150 skimmer, but the fit was too tight in my sump, so sold it and got a Simplicity DC320. Also picked up a secondhand unused Turbo Aquatics L2 algae scrubber, a used AquaUV sterilizer, and a used Apex Classic. Really regret this stand as everything is really tight down there. I have to drain the sump and disconnect the scrubber just to clean the screen. Skimmate after 24 hours:
  6. After all the plumbing was done, I realized the Tunze was way too much pump for my needs and actually was not as silent as I would have liked. Went cheap with a jebao dc12000, which lasted all of 30 seconds before dying. Decided to go with a ecotech vectra M1 after that and it has been working well for me. Went with brs eco saver rock and fiji pink sand. Then after putting the finishing touches on my aquascape, ending up breaking one of my top braces! All the advice online was not to take a chance and to replace the tank. That really was not an option for me after all I had already gone through. I contacted the tank tank manufacturer, AGA/Aqueon, and they said they stopped selling replacement trims. I was able to buy one from here: http://www.aquariumframeswholesale.com When the trim came in, I got a hacksaw blade and cut out all the old trim (fortunately my tank was empty), 4-6 inches at a time, (it's tedious, but any more than that you risk cracking your glass when pulling off the trim) and then cleaned off all the silicone. I followed this video: I put silicone on the new trim and put it on with something heavy on top of it to hold it down while the silicone cured (24 hours). Seemed to work okay and finally filled the tank with saltwater.
  7. As I started to buy equipment, I realized that the stand is quite short and the openings would not allow much of a sump. Seeing that I would have to put the sump in through the top (and therefore never be able to switch it out) I decided to get a nicer sump rather than going used/cheap like I originally planned. So I got a Trigger Systems Ruby 30 sump. I wanted to run a manifold off the return for a uv sterilizer, carbon, and algae scrubber, so I decided to get a large return pump. Picked up a Tunze Silence Pro 1073.110A (rated at 2900 gph) from a fellow wamas member. Used a 20g tall tank as my ATO reservoir. Again, had to go through the top, so not coming out unless tank broken down. Hired Rob (zygote2k) to do the plumbing. I decided to go with a dual Herbie. He was able to make both emergency drains go into the same filter sock as one of the full siphon lines: I have dual returns coming over the top and I had him offset the pipes on the back of the tank for ease of cleaning with the flipper:
  8. The overflows were nasty and it took several vinegar baths to clean them out. Note to self: never buy another reef ready tank (especially not used) and go with an external overflow. Although this will probably be my last tank for a while. Got the wifey involved and gave her the task of re staining the stand. Found some info on the interwebs on how to do that without much sanding/stripping involved - gel stain. We used General Finishes Java. Awesome stuff. Followed by Miniwax wipe on poly. Very pleased with the results: Then we had to figure out what to do with the tank trim. Found a solution - black vinyl tape. Worked beautifully:
  9. Documenting my 125 gallon FOWLR build that I started back in Sept/Oct. Most of the fish I want to stock will be mellow and have some yellow in them... Picked up this 125g reef ready fixer upper for $350 on craiglist: I hated the oak, but it was slim pickings on both wamas and craigslist for several weeks when I was looking for a 125g.
  10. What does a whole whole generator running off of natural gas run in terms of install cost and maintenance? How long would it last running two tanks, a fridge, lights, and HVAC?
  11. Check out King of DIY's video on surviving power outages. Some methods of heating the tank:
  12. Power just came back on. 28 hours of no power. Longest we ever lost power, including during the derecho. If anyone wants to borrow any battery powered bubblers, let me know.
  13. Going on 26 hours. Temps in the house are 59 and tanks are 64 :( no losses so far. Fingers crossed.
  14. I bought 5 of the marina ones plus D batteries. So was over the threshold for add-on and free same day.
  15. Ecotech battery backup died short of 12 hours running two mp40s. Maybe in the future I should only have it run one, although this has been the longest we've ever been without power. Still no estimate from dominion. Fortunately my Amazon same day delivery just came with my battery air pumps. This will save me from scooping and dumping throughout the night.
  16. Power went out at 7am for me. My two display tanks have battery backups, but I have three qts running right now. I plan on aerating them by using cups to scoop out tank water and pouring back in. Will doing this for 30 seconds each tank every hour be sufficient? The qts are 20g. One has 2 fish. The others each have 1.
  17. Yeah, with sensitive fish like wrasses, you have to gradually ramp up to therapeutic levels over several days. Here are some useful posts regarding treating with copper: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/copper-treatment.193343/ https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/fish-and-treatment-guidelines-with-chart.283450/
  18. How did you wire it to hook up to the fmm?
  19. Tom, How are you planning on using these? Will these be able to be plugged in to the Apex FMM or breakout box (after rewiring)?
  20. Washington Post has an article on him: https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home/jos-roozen-horticulturist-who-dispensed-gardening-advice-over-the-radio-dies-at-70/2018/02/14/b93173aa-10ed-11e8-9065-e55346f6de81_story.html?utm_term=.3ce05a507820
  21. I use 2, both by AVAST. The bucket one is a little cheaper than the acrylic ones. It would take a long time for me to fill up a 5-gallon bucket though, so I found a smaller bucket (I think it's like 2.5 or 3 gallons) that it fits on and is semi-transluscent. I find the bucket one easier to empty as well compared to the acrylic ones. There are DIY versions out there as well.
  22. All aquarium stuff now 60% off. Picked up a refractometer for $11 (sorry, last one) and other assorted stuff for qts. Still some aqueon heaters, tetra whisper air pumps, lots of power filters. They have some Kent marine starter kits and additives. No sand or salt. Some marine pellet foods like nls thera a and formula 2 and also prime reef flakes. Guy said they close in 17 days and aren't moving things fast enough, so they keep marking things down.
  23. I think so, but I didn't see many marine fish there. Even so, that location does not have healthy marine fish anyways. Lots of power filters at 50% off, canister filters at 40% off. Mostly mairineland and aqueon stuff.
  24. I think that location is shutting down. All items are up to 50% off.
