What test kits are you using? Is the tank packed full of coral? I think it's pretty rare for a new tank to run too clean. Usually it's mature tanks packed with large corals. If the test kits are sensitive to low numbers the the problem is definitely tank too clean

You said you adjusted alk with a water change. Do small water changes (but more often) a large water change can cause an alk swing among other swings (temperature, salinity, etc)shocking sps coral. Any alk swing is bad we know that for sure and in my opinion alk should slowly be adjusted only with a drip doser .2dkh max per day in an sps tank. Any fluctuation and i see problems though. If it doesn't test the same every time I get worried. Also leaving skimmer off can make the pH fluctuate as the tank isn't blowing off CO2? I don't know a lot about that but it might be something you want to look into. It's so important that some people run skimmer intake to fresh air. SPS tanks that have the harder acros require a lot of attention to detail to keep colors and keep stuff alive it's a fun challenge

They can't sit in the mail that long. They don't have enough oxygen and ammonia will get them. I can't even get damsels to live if I wait till noon to pick them up -
Cool vid! I was expecting some cursing and other shinanigans. I had read potassium overdose can mess with the tips also. I was blindly dosing it and saw a few problems with it. Also have seen it with the alk fluctuations and lights turned up too high like you have mentioned.

i can't comment on how the ocean is as my SPS coral lives in only 300g of water. My corals (SPS) have bleached when I changed conditions or I get a new coral in the mail that bleaches soon after I get it. Or I changed them from one tank to another they can bleach. (Temps had nothing to do with the bleaching) Zooxanthellae are the symbiotic algae that live within the hard or stony corals that give it color and energy. They hopefully change out to a better more approprate zooxanthallae when changing tanks/conditions. But sometimes they don't and the coral dies. Anyhow I feel that the earth is overpopulated. And it's getting worse (population). None of us are having a positive impact on the enviornment. Every time we flush the toilet a portion of it is untreated and ends up in the ocean eventually. Every time we turn the fish tank lights and heaters on the earth is negatively affected. Heck the photographer was having fun boating with some guests on board and didn't realize the anchor had drifted. Who knows how much coral that drifting anchor destroyed. The clam is a giga clam. No longer imported to the US. However we have one for sale on WAMAS!!!! Since it was imported before the ban. It's huge and in the Washington area at a Thai restaurant

bumpski few updates sold the large stags and added old school lokani 20k I had been looking a long time -
Iol I was stopping in to take a look. But they had so much nice stuff I left with goodies also

. Be careful as it can have sunscreen and toxins in it if it if it's from a busy beach. Sticks, algae dirt, I would just pay for the stuff at the store
-
Yea it's Paul's new place! I think fintastic is a chain store though? It's a little smaller than the last place. But they pack in just as many fish and coral. The frag tanks are much nicer allow for better viewing and SPS looks very nice and healthy decent selection.

My ph probe needs calibrated but here is what my tank does Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No never seen it. But I will say it will be gone when it's done eating the stuffs in your rock. I have noticed I get algaes or cyano once a year from nutrient build up on rock. I don't know what opens the door but it happens and goes crazy. Then after awhile when it has nothing left to eat it goes away. I don't think your tank has a nutrient problem so I think it will go away after a good fight.

Mine can get fat like that after a good meal. Usually that doesn't happen though with the male because the female doesn't let the male out far enough to get in the food jet stream. I notice the fat belly is gone though after food is digested

Yea it's Aiptasia. Very common pest
-
The best way to combat it is to grow a huge mat of zoas or GSP overtop of the rock.

Hope they find an appropriate home. And hope this irresponsible person gets out of the hobby quickly

Or car battery with inverter will run a lot on anything with regular wall plugs. My inverter does 300watts. That's a return pump, power head and maybe a 100w heater. On a fresh battery it will go quite awhile.

stupid question: how do you keep xenia from spreading?
gmerek2 replied to sen5241b's topic in General Discussion
Trust me. JUST GET RID OF IT! lol I had same experience as bruleyii. hopefully your tank is smaller and much more manageable than mine. I did the kalk paste until I removed it from the system -
My magnesium test is so inaccurate. It's hard to explain. It basically says low medium or high. But again that's all we need to know. I know it breaks numbers down like that but it only takes 2ml of tank water. My alk test takes 10ML. So the 150 difference you are seeing could be a million different factors. Did the moisture left over in the test tube cause the missing? Were you looking at the test glass under a different color light? Did you push harder on the plunger to get that last drop? Was there microscopic bubbles in the test this time? Were there a couple extra powder grains in the fun dip powder that gets dumped in with the tiny spoon? The two different drop containers.....did you use a protractor to make sure they were 90 degrees upright to make uniform size drops? Did you fill to the top middle or end of the 2ml line both times? I could go on and on but the meaning of the story is they aren't accurate measuring devices. And the fluctuation you are seeing Isn't much.
-
You have an auto top off right? No salinity fluctuation
-
Everyone did a great job with the alk. Now as far as the magnesium I don't think it should have dropped that fast. It's probably just inconsistency in the testing units. they aren't perfect but as far as mag goes, I just want to know if it's low, medium or high. Mag has a pretty wide acceptable range and usually can be replaced with regular water changes. I didn't have to start dosing it until the sps started to fill in the tank

Thanks everyone that helped. They are columbellid snails. I thought I had only two that came in on some frags. I removed them before dipping and placed them in the tank. Now there are 15-20 probably more! I hope they continue to reproduce so I can stop buying snails. Updated video of several just at the front of the tank
