  1. We've all been there; it's an itch til you get one, then you have to try them all. I do love them... but I caution you to get a larger tank (or even a separate tank) so then you won't care what it does. This is my first time keeping them in a smaller system and I wanted to share my frustration since I could see it coming.
  2. Yes. I really wouldn't try one with your tank. Mine killed all my sps in a 2' square and you seem to be just getting into them. Stick with a torch or similar (there's no glamour to owning a bta that a euphilia coral can't provide and your clowns won't care) and keep the frustration to a minimum for now. I think that's the one creature that I've sworn at the most in this hobby... maybe my fuzzy lions, but at least they're cute
  3. It's very frustrating to get them out. I often refer to them as my wacky waving inflatable tube men, since they blow everywhere stinging everything. Now I keep things that aren't really affected near them (mostly bc they've killed everything else); helipora, macros, and an encrusting gorg that simply doesn't care. And they split in half, so you would get two equal of equal size. IMO, there is no "small" with nems, not for long. I'm lucky to have a rock their feet like so they don't wander. But they do stretch really far!
  4. Ooh! Are we posting anemone takeover pics? I'll play! 30g cube. There's two in this pic (they've each since split and now I have at least three more just chillin' in my sump).
  5. I have a swing arm lamp off Amazon and a Par38 bulb on my 8g at work. A little hard to fix to a cubical desk, but looks much better than a gooseneck.
  6. Nice, you're closer than everywhere else to me. I'll have to stop by soon!
  7. Been neglecting the tank for a little while...Need to get going on a big water change and some other things on the tank to-do list. But chief among my distractions from the tank; Conan got a new little sister, Valeria!
  8. CUTE!! What's the last fish? Little blenny?
  9. I have two pumps that do it for me. Mix water, then one pumps in while the other pumps out. That's about as automated as it gets...and I still get lazy!
  10. Nice setup and aquascape! Welcome =)
  11. Heliopora is what I was referring to, not hydnophora; it isn't stinging or aggressive, other than fast growing. It's the pink in the center of this photo
  12. I've seen some nice looking tanks with white backgrounds, which also makes the tank pop. Otherwise, I'm a fan of black (or even better, foam!).
  13. What about heliopora? I'm not sure if it would be ok for seahorses, but it grows plating and branching and seems like it would be a good hitching post for them. Grows in pretty much anything and doesn't seem to care about anything I've ever done to it (I've even drastically dropped salinity in it's tank before).
  14. I would say no later than a week. Also greatly depends on the type and size of the new tang. Adding the new fish in the early morning before lights on (or lights very low) has worked well for me.
  15. Hawkfish are amazing and I'll recommend them every time. Especially kept in pairs.
  16. Gorgeous as always, and I'm stealing that chalk bass pic for my wallpaper! Stunning! Glad you kept the tall scape from your 74 too. Love the height; it's like a beautiful blend of both your previous tanks.
  17. In the same vein as the Okeanos in the Mariana trench: the Nautilus is live streaming in British Columbia (and half an hour from the bottom right now!) http://www.nautiluslive.org/live/channel-2 I like listening to their team much better - they're more funny/interactive and you can send a question to their team! I've already heard a couple teachers sending questions on behalf of their classes also.
  18. For the 4 weeks alone thing.. Set up a webcam on a computer with skype on it or something similar where you can at least check on it while you're gone. Does the power/AC/heat go out during that time? In this same thought, I'd stick to a super hardy fish like a damsel. By themselves they can be really interactive and friendly. I have coral stocking like you were mentioning in my 8g at work.
  19. A nice macro algae tank would be good for something that could go a few days. "Almost" like a pest tank, but just a bunch of very hearty, pretty stuff. Like Squishie said, maybe get some hitchhiker sponges. Just get an Aquaclear hob, stick a little heater in it and some kind of light and you're good to go. Another idea would be to do some caulerpa prolifera or other seagrass lookin' thing, with a rock and a mangrove right in the middle. Would be neat looking in that tall shape at least and different. Would also make a nice moss or succulent terrarium if you wanted to skip the saltwater route altogether (but who would do that ). Someone's pet reptile probably got a nice home from that cracked 180.
  20. Update time! I did it!!! FINALLY got out the second rbta. I was just planning to do a big overhaul and take them both out this weekend, but noticed the foot of one had moved between two rocks, so I was able to get it out easily and put it in a basket in the sump, only to have it split again down there. Glad I was able to get it out and not have to deal with three nems in the display, one is more than enough. Although I'm still planning on doing some major overhauls in and around the tank this weekend. The RBTAs taking over was really frustrating on several levels, maybe now I can take out some of the cramped, extra rockwork and try to keep some sps where they won't get stung... I'll post pics more later, but here's a big, adorable photo dump of the pygmy hawks.
  21. 180 all the way; gorgeous dimensions. I miss mine so much. They're the same height, so lighting would be the same, but with the 180 you'll have better width to scape with plus more a little more sandbed/swimspace. I wouldn't even think there would be a noticeable difference in maintenance. I think that would be fine if your corals are centered mostly underneath. You could always get some small, cheap lights to put on the ends so it doesn't look like there's only light in the center in case it ends up looking odd.
  22. Bump for another cool day of diving! Live! I know they ID'd it, but I forget. Sry, they use a lot of the genus names, and don't get too specific, but either way I can't remember those big words
