sen5241b December 27, 2013 December 27, 2013 (edited) I've had this heater in a 5g bucket for 3 days and it kept the water at 79.7 perfectly. I then put it my 20G and it stays on until the temp is over 81 or I turn it off. I did read the instructions. I've worked with equipment long enough to know there is some quirk to this thing not in the instructions. Before I swing it by the cord and bust it on a brick wall can anyone tell me how to get this adjusted? Edited December 27, 2013 by sen5241b
mr.x-ray December 27, 2013 December 27, 2013 Same thermometer? If not that's probably where your at. Does the heater turn off in your tank eventually?
sen5241b December 27, 2013 Author December 27, 2013 yeah, same one. No the heater seems to never turn off in my tank. I've been messing with it for 5 days. I've set more heaters than I can recall and never had one this difficult.
AlanM December 27, 2013 December 27, 2013 Is something weird with the flow or the water level different in the tank that was different in the bucket? Getting enough mixing to make sure that the sensor which is up by the dial on the top is reading water temp accurately?
Cliff Puckstable December 27, 2013 December 27, 2013 I've noticed that the red indicator can be adjusted. What's up with that??

The red indicator calibrates it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I thought at first that was a max level, but it turns out that it is a minimum level.
zygote2k December 28, 2013 December 28, 2013 helicopter time! go buy another after the old one flies away.
wangspeed December 28, 2013 December 28, 2013 They are pretty easy to set, and mine have been reliable. Check out videos on youtube about setting Jagers.
sen5241b January 2, 2014 Author January 2, 2014 It is definitely defective. Not happy with this heater.
Origami January 2, 2014 January 2, 2014 Really weird. Did you get it new? Can you return / replace it?
sen5241b January 2, 2014 Author January 2, 2014 Got it new. Going to look at returning it. I put it my tank and the temperature goes up and down by more than 1 degree F every 90 minutes. That can't be right.

That can't be right. I wouldn't necessarily call a 1 degree swing defective. Do you have this plotted out, like with a controller?
YHSublime January 3, 2014 January 3, 2014 I wouldn't necessarily call a 1 degree swing defective. Agreed.
YHSublime January 4, 2014 January 4, 2014 It's more than 1° Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Like a degree and a half? 5 degrees? If you're going to chuck it, I can test it out in my mixing station.
sen5241b January 6, 2014 Author January 6, 2014 Like a degree and a half? 5 degrees? If you're going to chuck it, I can test it out in my mixing station. Yeah, like a degree and a half every 90 mins and I have a digital therometer accurate to .2 F. My current titanium heater sees swings of no more than .4 or .5 in a day.
Coral Hind January 6, 2014 January 6, 2014 I would look into getting a digital controller like a Ranco if you can DIY or one of the JBJ or Finnex units. http://www.amazon.com/Finnex-Max-300-Digital-Aquarium-Controller/dp/B007480AP6/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_1 There should be a water level line on the black top part just under the dial and above the glass. I thought at first that was a max level, but it turns out that it is a minimum level. On some it is a max and on other brands it is a minimum so you have to look closely to each one. The ones I have marked with a minimum line will not stay on if not fully submerged as they heat up too fast and shut off. The ones with the max line tend to get water in them over time if lowered below that line.
mling January 6, 2014 January 6, 2014 To prevent a defective heater from cooking my 200G of water, I have multiple smaller heaters instead of one big one.
sen5241b January 6, 2014 Author January 6, 2014 (edited) To prevent a defective heater from cooking my 200G of water, I have multiple smaller heaters instead of one big one. Very, very good idea. Maybe a couple 50 watts in my 20G. Hve any trouble syncing them? Edited January 6, 2014 by sen5241b

I also don't trust the thermostat on heaters so I have a Ranco provide the temp of the tank. I know, that's a real expansive thermometer
