Mattiejay6 October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 (edited) I have had the new waveline DC 6000 now for about 2 months give or take and have noticed that rust is starting to form outside the seam where the impeller housing meets the motor housing.. Is anyone else with the new pumps seeing rust at all? I spoke to RLSS and they said that it wasn't a problem. They advised to just rinse it off and it will go away.. Well I did wash it off and the rust marks were all back within a day... I am starting to think there is more then meets the eye to this problem.. Edited October 9, 2013 by Mattiejay6
YHSublime October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 Mines been doing fine, sorry I don't have an answer for you. Are you sure it's rust?
Mattiejay6 October 9, 2013 Author October 9, 2013 Yup it is def rust.. I think GFO is a little different in the type of metal it is? I am running poly filters to pull any foul out.. But just seems interesting that it is having issues.. I am thinking maybe the motor housing isn't fully sealed and getting creep from in there...
08can-am October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 I was joking. Im not sure. Bummer though. Maybe someone else with similar issue will help you out. Good catch seeing it courtesy of my sweet S4

monkiboy October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 i have the reef octopus variety and the volute and design is different and i don't have any of those issues with the pump in water for about a month or so now. that certainly looks like rust. not to worry about, regardless of whether it is a problem related to performance or livestock or not, it's a problem and RLSS shouldn't be telling you otherwise. i can't imagine how it could be anything other than their design/materials/assembly causing the issue. nothing unique about how it's being used or your water, right? you didn't use some type of sealant to fix a leak or something around the pump?
Origami October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 That looks terrible. Is it coming right from the edge or is it leaning from inside the volute? Have you sent this picture to RLSS? Sent from my phone

Mattiejay6 October 9, 2013 Author October 9, 2013 I haven't used anything in that area at all... When this started that was the only pump in the tank.. What ever is rusting out has to be coming from inside the motor itself? The impeller and the screws have no signs of rust at all...I called RLSS again today and they just told me to send them an email with photos and we will see what happens... It is coming from right where the impeller front housing meets the actually motor housing.. It's on all 4 seams all the way around the pump.
Jason Rhoads October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 That does look pretty blatant. Hopefully they will send you a replacement free of charge. Thanks for sharing this with the group, I may hold off on getting one of these for a bit.
sachabballi reef October 9, 2013 October 9, 2013 how do you feel the CS has been from them up until this point? Other than the obvious LOL...feel like they will work with you or do you have a fight on your hands?
Mattiejay6 October 10, 2013 Author October 10, 2013 Their Customer Service is a pain in th butt... I finally got ahold of someone today and he told me to email him photos and the email he gave me didn't work...I sent a generic email to their sales department... I am gonna have to try again tomorrow.
howaboutme October 10, 2013 October 10, 2013 Man, what a nightmare. Is this the same company that had that recent UL listing issue?
Origami October 10, 2013 October 10, 2013 Man, what a nightmare. Is this the same company that had that recent UL listing issue? Yes. They're replacing two pumps for me. DC5000's to DC6000's.

Come by and pick it up and when you replace it, bring the rusted one back to us. We will deal with our distributor on this to get a replacement.

I've dealt with people in Canada, but then a guy from China jumped in to help him out. Sent from my phone
wildcrazyjoker81 October 10, 2013 October 10, 2013 I hope I don't run into any of these issues with my DC12000
Mattiejay6 October 10, 2013 Author October 10, 2013 well.. when I talked to the guy on the phone yesturday he told me that I was the first to report a problem with the new pumps.. how ever he was aware that rust was an issue in the first batch because of some metal shavings left over from manufacturing.. then he said that from what I am describing it dosent sound like that is the case.
Origami October 10, 2013 October 10, 2013 Eddie Ye? He's in China and has treated me well. Did you send him pictures? If he doesn't jump on this, then take Steve up on his offer and let him replace it through distribution.
Mattiejay6 October 10, 2013 Author October 10, 2013 yes that was him.. do you have his email?? because what they provided on the phone didnt work
