  1. Interesting, I thought you'd need 420nm to get good floresing. Can you show a pic?
  2. Only concerned about SPS & stony LPS. I know they can be expensive. Where to get? Locally maybe?
  3. Nice work Chris! I agree with the other poster, add a tang & beef-up your clean-up crew. I'll suggest one of these guys. Not expensive & very industrious a scouring surfaces of algae & stuff. Some say not very pretty but I got a nice healthy one at BRK and he looks great. Never stops eating.
  4. I've had Jeff (NAGA) build 2 tanks for me. Both were "non standard" dimensions. Great work.
  5. I think the big tank is around 500 gals. Those short-n-fat (kinda like me) tanks in the center look like nice coral tanks just getting going.
  6. Thanks folks, I meant that the sacro head is about 3" across. The hole is < 1/4" across. Otherwise looks healthy. The piece of food is possible as the coral kinds forms a cup that can hold stuff. Spawning event sound like a good theory too. New bulbs, next month's hurdle :-)
  7. It's abount 3" across. Polyps fully extend during the day. Hard to see the hole when polyps out, easy to see early morning. Otherwise looks healthy. Edges of the hole don't appear to be damaged or diseased. Polyps right up to the edge. Don't see any bugs. Maybe not a problem. Just looking for opinions.
  8. Just stopped-by the new "Aquatic Obcession" to check the place out and pick-up a few peppermint shrimp (I have aptasia ) Great new setup! Much nicer than the old "Cozy Clownfish". The peps are big-n-fat; they were actually "feeding" the peps aptasia so they should love my tank . Yiannis helped me re-think my soon-2-be lighting upgrade. Nice setup & helpful employees and they're just getting started. Two thumbs up!
  9. Alternatively, can anyone confirm something bad happens to salt-water that has been sitting stagnant? If I had a batch sitting stagnant I would probably check and adjust the salinity and run a carbon/mechanical filter plus heater on if overnight just in case bugs or something got in there.
  10. 2 minutes from my house... kewl
  11. Way to go Jan! Does the lobster mess with anyone else? DO you have shrimp in there?
  12. Hey Bob, this is one for the picture-a-day progression type of thread.
  13. That would be great Dave; very interested.
  14. Ice scraper, great idea! Sounds easier on the wrist too; thanks!l
  15. Use this combination and laugh at the glass heads: http://www.magnavore.com/ - use this often for a few minutes a day or every few days and keep the old credit cards or promo cards in the mail for stubborn spots. The credit card is softer than the acrylic and won't scratch the acrylic but will easily remove the algae. I've owned acrylic for more years than many of the members here have been alive and acrylic is not hard to clean and keep scratch free.
  16. It's also a tradeoff and depends on what corals you have and what you want to accomplish. All 10k's and your SPS will probably grow great but not look so colorful. I'm a little heavy on the 10k side and my SPS are growing great while my shrooms at the botton are shriveled unless under an overhang. My color could be better also.
  17. One piece to the puzzle is still missing... You didn't say what the spectrum is. I moved a few rocks full of corraline and shrooms ftom a lightly lit tank to my DT (on the same sump) and the purple coraline is fading to faint pink and less of it and the shrooms are shriveling-up and that was 3 months ago. SPS show good growth but poorer color. I have T-5s and I'm going to swap at-least 1 10K for an actinic. Just a thought
  18. Get a Phosphate test kit. If the concentration is high, get a PhosBan rector and some PhosBan. I used PhosBan and was amazed at how well it worked. Also test your tap water and let us know if it reads high too.
  19. I'd sure like to see a pic of the fuge. Just looked at the 40 in the dedicated tank forum. Good work.
  20. I plan on making a moveable divider just to hold-back cheato to the end of my frag tank. I plan on cutting-out a piece of eggcrate a little smaller than the height & width of the frag tank and gluing it to a piece of acrylic which will act as the base. I
  21. You can, and many do, keep SPS under T5's and yes they don't generate near as much heat. Just my $.02
  22. Looks like the back panel with all the slots is acrylic?
