Uber Reefer (10/13)

  1. Even if the prediction is off by 20 or more years, there's no denying that the world's reef is in decline in some shape or form. The question is can we afford to wait when the disaster is finally on top of us or on top of our children before we try to do something about it. We tend to push things off for tomorrow if it doesn't affect us today. I think it's easier to come up with a long term solution while time is still on our side, and take small steps toward that than to wait till last minute and come up with a drastic measure that may not work at all.
  2. We wanted to because it was fairly close to the resort. Between my diving and going to town to see other things, we ended up not having enough time to go there.
  3. It's a tough little thing to survive the abuses from my now 5 year old. We gave it to our daughter couple of years ago when I bought my wife the Sony DSC-T700 camera. In term of accessing the features in the menu, I find it easier than the Sony. Aside from minor scratches on the LCD screen, it's still going strong. I bought this underwater housing from Aquatic Adventures. It's made to fit a wide variety of point and shoot. It's perfect for me to do casual diving photography for now, and for us to use at the pool and at the beach. I'll eventually get a dedicated cameara such as the Sealife DC1200 with a strobe, but that won't be for awhile. http://www.seashell.hk/PublishWebSite/seashell/gallery/getCMSPage.asp?url=/PublishWebSite/seashell/en/contentPage28732.htm
  4. I think it was both. Willemsted is a gorgeous little city with its brightly colored buildings. My wife and daughter did some shopping there (I just carried the bags). We met several people at the resort who dove in bonaire and they all highly recommended that we go there because it was not only a great place for shorediving but also a great place to bring the family. It looks like that might be our next vacation location next year.
  5. I was going to rent one of those underwater camera for the week, but ended up buying a relatively inexpensive underwater camera housing and put my daughter Casio Exilim point and shoot 5 MP camera inside it.
  6. I haven't been to a meeting in so long because of my wife work schedule. I'd like to go to this one, but I'll have to check with the wife schedule first and also see how far it is from here.
  7. I was expecting night diving to be like diving at the deep end of the quarry where you couldn't see anything, but it was the opposite. The first time I turned off my light and slowly waved my hands and saw hundred of tiny bio-luminesce critters lit up like the night stars, I was ecstatic. It was the coolest thing in the world to see. The same rock formation and corals look different at night. I ended all of my night dives with at least 1000 PSI left. My day dives usually ended between 250 and 550 PSI for roughly the same amount of dive time until I was told to slow down, don't kick as often, breathe deeply, relax and enjoy the view.
  8. Ain't that the truth. I had Dave Sun and Hilary to thank for that one. I still would like to complete my wreck certification, but if the boat ride in NC was anything like it was for me in Curacao where I got so seasick that I refused to do anymore boat dive there, I won't be completing that cert any time soon. James
  9. Hope this works. Here's a link to some of the dive photos. http://www.wamas.org/forums/gallery/album/1692/924-curacao-dive-trip/ James
  10. The family and I just came back from a week long vacation in Curacao. It was my first diving trip. All I can say is "WOW!" What a fantastic place. I did a couple of boat dive and got really bad seasick. Took dramamine for the seasickness and found out that I'm allergic to it and got even more nauseated the following day. The rest of the time, I did shore diving. I did my night dives to complete my night diving certification. What a rush! I can see why Hilary loves night diving so much. I was hooked the first time I shut off my dive light and waved my hand and saw hundred of the tiny bio-luminescense sea critters lit up like the night stars. I have a few diving photos to share with you guys. I just need to figure out the best way to do it. James
  11. the blue one from the pepsi plant holds 30 gal and the white one hold 50 gal. I have a white 50 gal that I'm no longer using. PM me if you want it. James
  12. Does anyone know if T5 can be used in tank with height of 24" that contain a mix of sps and lps corals? Also, do you happen to know the average lifespan for them before they need to be replace if they run for 10-12 hours/day? James
  13. John, Phosphate and reagent please. Thanks. James
