  1. yeah, i think you're right rob like the most recent replies here. i've passed on it and just going to sell my new 210g and pick up a standard 265 to get the extra height i want.
  2. yeah, that's the way i'm inclined to go. maybe it'll make sense for someone's reptile.
  3. ok, so i contacted the major shops around town... myles glass, dulles glass, del-ray glass, banner glass, gaithersburg glass, full service glass. i got prices for "regular" non-tempered polished edge glass ranging from $425 to $1800! i was really hoping for low iron or starphire but that brought me to over $1000 bucks. i have to figure out if it'll be worth it or if i should just sell the 210g and pick up a standard 265 which is right around $1050. might be the smarter way to go.
  4. haha, yeah right. even if i did find myself into a new hobby like that, i couldn't deal with knowing that crack was there.
  5. that's a clever idea! but i prefer the height vs depth/width in an aquarium. i know the hot thing nowadays is deep tanks but it doesn't appeal to me and requires double the lighting. it also would eat up room in the small fish room i have planned. but i'm going to take measurements and see what makes sense, wait for quotes from a few sources and if the 24 is substantially cheaper and i can make it happen in my space, then perhaps it'll be worth it. most the fish i have planned are in the lower half of the tank anyway so perhaps a taller tank isn't as ideal as i think it would be. thanks for the post.
  6. hi jeff, thanks for your input! the stand looks horribly made, i think you were being kind in you choice of words. i would agree that there's a chance the other panels were stressed and the seems and joints weakened. the goal in getting this tank would be to take it apart and reseal everything so as to alleviate the concerns with the seams and seals. i've done it with smaller builds up to a standard 55 and it's not that difficult. that coupled with dcreefer's professional history/background, leads me to believe (perhaps that's my naivete) that he and i could make easy work of it and have an amazing tank as a result. wouldn't building a true and level stand with a foam or insulation matting under it be sufficient for resettling of a basically new tank? do you have guidance on different materials for under the tank? my father owns a design and build firm and is a meticulous GC so as one might imagine, the stand will be done right and perhaps a bit over-engineered. the only outstanding item for concern for me is finding someone that can provide the pane of glass i need for replacement. would you be able to assist in that regard? i believe you work with glass and acrylic, correct? i've called two shops thus far and they do not work with glass in 3/4 thickness but i'll keep searching.
  7. read my mind...
  8. trock* - that's the way i understood it, sir - no worries. i was politely referring to the text and pms i received. nonetheless, thank you for clarifying, isaac, do you happen to have a macro for that camera body? it'd be great to take some nice up close photos for us to see since you do have a nice camera available. or even dropping it into its "macro mode" and seeing what you are able to generate might be helpful. in the interim, how are the dips working out and have you tried bayer dips or are you sticking with revive/coralrx ?
  9. it'll be a while yet, but sure thing! at 3/4" thick glass, i don't know if there's any glass bracing up top. the photos don't seem to indicate as such. if the case, then "rimless" it will be it's going in a wall, anyways, haha. yeah, i expected as much. it seems to be the way these things manifest itself. someone gets a low ball quote that is no indication of what the cost would be. i figure ft i tackle the job personally, reseal, and the glass costs $500, i can sell my 210g and i'm quite happy over paying for new. i'd rather get my hands dirty and have some blood, sweat, and tears into the build.
  10. you should check out the evergrow units - we just had a gb on them. the savings over the ecotech marine alternative will be in the $2000+ with proven excellent results with a variety of corals, depths and setups, reliability, quietness, performance, etc. if anything, just another option to consider and one of my favorite lighting options of the past year or so. although, can get the gen 1 radions piece by piece at around $450 or so but even then are quite expensive and not really doing it in terms of "full spectrum". it's been interesting following along your build ideas and motivations as you seek out the right gear - keep us posted!
  11. because i'm starting to receive rather interestingly worded messages on this topic, i'd like to state i do not have red bugs or AEFWs in my frag system where these came from. these frags/colonies were QT'd per my rather stringent protocol, and i always inspect corals day of or a couple hours before i give or sell them away with a photographer's loupe. this frag pack i gave the original poster was no exception. so before jumping to conclusions or heated words, please be reasonable and fair if you choose to reach out to me personally. the original poster and i have a good relationship and we talked it over and he's going to try to save the pieces. i do appreciate the responses in this thread about what it could be and photos of the potential problems, as i know it has helped at least a couple reefers that had questions about these little annoying critters. thank you in advance for your understanding.
  12. thanks a lot, sir. if i'm able to lock it down, i'll have it by this weekend and we can talk. yeah, i don't think it was an oceanic.
  13. I'm pretty sure all the ones photographed in here are from the frag pack I gave him.
  14. roni - thanks so much for posting. those are the exact dimensions i've been looking for to upgrade my new 210. i pm and emailed the owner hoping i can snag it. thanks again!
  15. jamal - here's a recent helpful thread for you: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2267674
  16. how would you ever have a happy lemonpeel, even as a dwarf angel, in a 24g tank? i think they are beautiful but definitely would need more space than a 24g can offer, sir. the tank 2 idea sounds pretty good though. any particular wrasse in mind?
  17. yeah these are new releases from SA and much different than what most have posted about in tropical and non-reef related environments. i'll be sure to post up some photos and experience but they seem quite tame, very entertaining, easy to keep, and only aggressive towards other clingfish. not a pretty guy but the personality will surely make up for it, it seems. check out the reefbuilders article: http://reefbuilders.com/2012/12/18/sustainable-aquatics-captivebred-marine-bettas-stippled-clingfish-trickling-fish-stores/
  18. does anybody have one? if so, please comment on its behavior and your experience with it thus far. ordered one up that is coming from SA and am eager to see this tail wagging action that everyone talks about!
  19. +1 - two 2x4"s sister'd are stronger and less prone to warpage and issues than one 4x4".
  20. if you like the pellets and want to continue some use with them or any floating food, you can use a food ring. some folks use them with autofeeders so the food doesn't just whisk away into the overflow. it's like $2 at the petstore.
  21. these are the nano box reef lighting. they have individual potentiometers as well. stark sunlight 10000k white to radium 20000k blue is only a twist of a knob on most LED fixtures. i love LEDs over my tanks.
  22. it took a bit they have been spending more and more time around the anemones in my tank...it's great fun to watch the relationship begin! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUBCFfZ-McY
  23. seriously fat fish. i know they say fat and happy but jeez, haha! and i feel bad for some of those guys, they look like they could really use a lot more room to swim. have you considered making that thing a seahorse tank instead and giving those guys up for a more horizontally appropriate home or setup? or maybe you already got a new home planned for them?
  24. i think with this much interest it is best to start collecting payment prior to your purchase. i dont think anyone expects you to pay for all our boxes as we are clearly over two pallets at this point. post up your paypal so we can start sending you payment as a gift/personal with our user names, what kind of salt, and how many boxes, for ordering. i really appreciate this discount, richard. every little bit helps in this hobby - thanks for getting us together for this group buy!
  25. richard, i'll take 8 boxes of IO, please. in terms of pick up, wherever is convenient for you is good by me. just let me know either on here or shoot me a text. thanks.
