I think it all depends on how much flow you want to run and how you aquascape. I have a MP40W and a MP20 in my 72 both set on reef crest and they get the job done for me real well.
I am currently dosing Prodibio, Vodka and Vinegar to try to get rid of the hair algae and cyno that popped up when I had the bright idea to change my salt from Aqua Medic to DD H2O Pro. I have been doing it for a little over a month now and the cyno is fully gone and the hair algae is slowly going away. I dose one ampule of prodibio every 2 weeks and a 75/25 ratio if Vodka to Vinegar. I have been following the dosage instructions and structure here:

The only thing I change is I take the dosage and dose 75% Vodka and 25% Vinegar. I a happy with the results so far.
I have a spotted yellow boxfish which is in the same family and love it. It is cool to watch and is always out watching me. Also, when my hand is in the tank playing around with the corals he is always around close by trying to see what is going on. Just make sure when you stick your hands in the tank to do it slowly and try to avoid scaring the fish. If you have strong powerheads put a foam cover on them because the fish is not the strongest swimmer and will get sucked in. A few day ago I was looking at the tank and watching the fish then turned my head for a second to look at the TV then when I turned back I didn't see him. I went up to the tank and found him stuck to the vortec so I quickly saved him and no he is happy. I made sure to put the foam cover on the vortec to avoid it from happening again. Also, stay away from cleaner wrasses because they stress the fish out and can cause them to release a toxin.
I'll take a look into that, thanks. The reason I was going to use the double ended pendants is because I already have them sitting int he basement in my fish stuff pile and it wouldn't cost me anything.
Ya it is a great savings that I'll have to keep in mind but I think I have to wait a little longer to see how peoples tanks do with them. I'll definitely need to hit you up to check out how it looks soon.
I haven't thought about doing that mainly becayse I haven't seen a setup running it yet and don't know what it would look like. Also not sure how clams and SPS's would do. Have you finished setting yours up Rob? If so how's everything looking and doing? Also, what kind of light spread are you getting?
Thanks all for the great feedback!
I was thinking of running 4x39 Watt T5's on Ice cap 660's along the front and the back of the tank with the MH in between. The MH bulbs I will probably be using and Phenix 14's on Magnetic ballasts. The tank is 72x24x24. Should look like this (sorry about my crappy artwork).

Ok when it post it changes the picture but the MH will be evenly spread out inbetween the T5's
Hi all,
I am going to set up a 180 gallon tank once I am done redoing the basement and and basically trying to gather all the parts. I am planning to use Ice Cap Double ended pendants but am not sure what kind of wattage to run on this full SPS tank. The following are the options I have been thinking about and with all of these I will be running at least 8 T5 with individual reflectors.
1) 3x250 Watt
2) 4x250 Watt
3) 3x400 Watt
What do you guys think would be the best option?
Thanks,
Khalid
I have used the small honda generators before and it worked great but don't expect it to be as quiet as they make it seem because the one I was using, the 2000 watt version on the site, made a decent amount of noise. Either way I still think they are a must when the power go's out to keep from lossing you livestock. I currently have a husky generator for back up but that is no way near as light as the honda one but the husky puts out 3750 watts for 12 hours on a 4 gallon tank. It costs $500 at home depot.
My first reef a 33 gallon long started off as a turtle tank that was converted to a grow out african cichlid tank then to a reef tank and had no problems at all as long as you give it a cleaning.
i have a dwarf lion fish in my 40 breeder and love him! he doesn't touch corals, any of my snails, hermits, or any of the emralds hiding out in the rock. He will eat any fish that will fit in his mouth and he only will eat feeders but definitely a cool fish that will come to the front of the tsank when you are around.
No I didn't which didn't make it much fun ended up figuring out that the stray voltage was coming from one of my korilia nano's and I made sure to get it out of there.
Check your Koralia I had one of those cause that problem in my old tank. I got zapped pretty good one time when I was standing barefooted in some water I spilled and then stuck my hand in the tank.
Thanks everyone I think I will get new trim for the tan to be safe instead of having the 180 gallons of water end up on the floor.
Igozoom- That suck!! Sorry to hear that. :(
I used to have a pink carnation for a year or so and it was doing great in fact even grew some onto the rock I glued it on. The only reason I no longer have it is because it along with pretty much all my other corals died when my tank crashed after I moved this past summer. I am definitely going to be getting others in the future. I use phyto, marine snow, along with a few other Kent marine product 2 to 3 times a week and had it in a moderate to high flow section of the tank.
