  1. Years ago I had a LTA that kept getting bigger and bigger in a tank that started out as a softies/LPS tank but was slowly turning into an SPS tank. I anemone was in a stable place it liked and never moved - but it just kept growing - so I would try to hem it in with rocks building them up all around it. The anemone wasn't happy and neither was I because it just didn't look right. Hurricane Isabel solved the problem :bigcry:
  2. Very nice looking - great color :-) Watch that anemone (that moves) in front of the SPS (that can't get away)!
  3. Finding some of the stuff for the homemade 2-part at this time of year may be a little tough. You can mailorder DOW flakes from Buckeye Field Supply (place listed in RHF's articleJ, a place called Home & Beyond by Polsteins has Peladow, and MAG flakes from harveysalt.com A couple of them only have 50 pound bags. I haven't done it yet - I want to make sure I'm going to stick with this method.
  4. Don't know anyone using one now - but the OM's seem to need a lot of room and use a lot of PVC
  5. I still have my 55 gallon tank up. I run the MH's on a random basis over that, there is no heater, barely any flow (one maxijet 1200), temp is probably in lower 70's... basically I would think things would be going downhill fast. But NO! I have a few soft corals in there, xenia, pocillipora, even a milli - and they are all doing ok!!" Have you tried moving some of those to the new tank to see what happens? Obviously they're rather bulletproof.
  6. Tim - I'll make some assumptions. You rinsed all the sand you used but you used a good bit of seed sand - and you also used the vast majority of the water from your previous (cycled) tank. There is no possibility that this tank could still be cycling?
  7. I must be mentally ill - I actually started searching for members' e-mail addresses :P
  8. I have the green polyped one at the top of my 90 gallon (only VHO's - mainly actinics) and it gets plenty of flow.

Speaking of starting out suspicious - remember the reporter guy who posted and wanted to do a story in some local paper that he said would come out after the MACNA meeting. Anyone ever see that article?
  10. I absolutely agree - both on trying the syphon before the meds and on QTing (or dipping) everything - but I'm not sure how much I would stress a new addition if I pre-treated for red bugs, flat worms, did the old iodine dip, etc. Someone just said to me recently that this would be a really fun hobby if it weren't for all the pests :-)
  11. Hi JM, Your friend could also syphon them out and try to keep up the numbers down that way. http://www.melevsreef.com/flatworms.html Hook up a powerhead to some airline tubing, put a bag on the end and pull them out.
  12. I have done repeat business with GC getting 2 glass tanks first and then one acrylic sump the last time. For whatever reason, I haven't had big problems with them on the phone even though I've had to call back with issues a few times. I usually try to talk to Beth (Tom's wife?) but even when I got Tom on the phone - he's been "OK" - but after reading this I won't do business with them again. I think it's true that because they have more business than they know what to do with (because you really can't beat their prices or the shipping arrangements), they can treat people the way they do. The only way to affect behavior is by hitting them in the pocket. If their business dries up - I think they will change.
  13. Chris - let me know when you get back. Hope all goes well with the tank but this may be the opportunity to fix things you didn't like.
  14. and you know where to get local frags :-)
  15. Hope you have a wonderful trip!
  16. JM - you really do deserve a lot of credit for taking this on. Many people, including myself would say "it would be really nice to do ......" but then the thought goes away and our everyday lives take over. You made the effort and followed through. Thanks for being the one who made it happen :-)
  17. Have a great day of football and food :-)
  18. Speaking of temperature in general - with the weather turning colder we need to start paying attention to it in the other direction too. I walked past the controller the other morning at around 7:00 am and there was this strange red light on and it took me a minute to realize that that means the heater should be on. I had removed the heater when I switched sumps (the old heater was rusted) and I hadn't even plugged the new heater back in!!
  19. You can count me in for a straight donation of $20

    Calling EVE

I wanna know who Mr. X is
  21. It would be nice if some of the attendees would hit the highlights of some of the speakers and their talks.
  22. Scott, Since you are getting Chip to help you should be just fine :-) but some lessons learned from my failed experiment at doing baffles are to use thick enough acrylic (if you go acrylic but thicker glass is probably better) and silicone it well. That's why I ended up just getting a sump made other than the fact that the one I have now is just too to small overall. My cheap (thin) acrylic and lousy silicone job didn't hold up long under the water pressure going through the sump.
  23. "Just popping in to say hi to Al." Hi SM - didn't mean to ignore you :-)
