Happyfeet April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 (edited) It still hasn't happened! At least I'm getting good SPS growth though! Is there anything I can do to promote the growth of Coralline Algae? Happyfeet April 29, 2014 Author April 29, 2014 I do... I have one isolated patch on some live rock that fluctuates between deep pink and light pink. It has never expanded and has never spread to other parts of the tank. All in all, the amount of Coralline algae I have could fit under the face of a dollar bill.
Jason Rhoads April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 Describe your lighting setup. Otherwise, I don't understand why you are not seeing any. Is your rock totally white?
Happyfeet April 29, 2014 Author April 29, 2014 I use Everygrow LED IT2040, It runs at about 45% intensity at 10" off the water. For the most part uncovered rock is whiteish, except from the single rock with the actual coralline algae on it mentioned above. For a while I thought the SPS was just sucking down all the calcium faster than the algae could metabolize it, so I pushed the calcium to the upper registers, and held it there for a while without much luck.
Jason Rhoads April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 Humm, that should be fine. Perhaps getting a seed rock in there with another variety of coraline in there would do the trick.
matt April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 My rock is decidely NOT white, but it's not covered in purple coralline either. I wonder if it gets too much light. Frankly, I like this better...as I believe the porous surface of the rock isn't sealed over. Note, I do have some asterinas that graze my rock and other critters who hunt and peck. Anything living in your tank that could be preventing growth?
wildcrazyjoker81 April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 (edited) It is funny how some people complain about not having coralline and then end up complaining about how often they have scrape their glass and vinegar soak everything to get it all off. My long spine urchin eats 90% of all my coralline in my 55, but I have to scrape it off the glass every couple days in my 150. Humm, that should be fine. Perhaps getting a seed rock in there with another variety of coraline in there would do the trick. +1 on getting a nice rock with coralline on it. Edited April 29, 2014 by wildcrazyjoker81
Djplus1 April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 Isn't there also, other color coraline algaes? Like perhaps you have "green" coraline or something. But how would I know, my tank is FULL of glorious purple coraline
sachabballi reef April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 grass is always greener.....my coralline is so bad that for a while earlier this year I considered throwing in the towel on my tank....I have insane growth and got so overwhelmed with scraping the glass that it stole from my enjoyment in the tank.... if it wasn't for the magnetic razor I would have lost my mind. so careful of what you ask for LOL.....somewhere in between you and I is the perfect purple tank....
Origami April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 Green and red coralline are different colors. Red coralline seems to recede under high intensity light. This may be part of the issue that you're seeing. I get coralline growth on my glass and on dark surfaces like pumps and overflows. Far less on rocks, though. Sent from my LG G-Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition
morgan175 April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 I thought if you scrape what you had in good flow it would spread. I know nothing in this hobby. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
miggs76 April 29, 2014 April 29, 2014 My tank is 2 years old next week and in the last 30 days for some reason or another the coralline has just taken off. Not sure if it had anything to do with the fact that I ditched GFO about a month ago? Are you currently using GFO?
Happyfeet April 29, 2014 Author April 29, 2014 I am running GFO... I'm not actually that upset over not having Coralline Algae, I was really just looking for an excuse to post a funny picture. I do find it odd I don't have any growth, but as Mrs Reef and wildcrazyjoke have said, excess coralline algae is a headache. I'll stay content to watch my SPS flourish. I may turn my GFO off for a month to see if that is what stunts my growth of coralline algae, I'd prefer to know than not!
