dbartco February 6, 2014 Share February 6, 2014 Curious how long before GFO has absorbed all it is going to absorb? yes, I am out of reagents to do the testing to see it stop going down...
zygote2k February 6, 2014 Share February 6, 2014 it's cheap enough to just replace it when you change carbon.
scott711 February 6, 2014 Share February 6, 2014 it depends on how high your phosphates are. If they are high, it won't take long at all.
zygote2k February 6, 2014 Share February 6, 2014 I believe doug is asking about the regeneration process of GFO.

dbartco February 7, 2014 Author Share February 7, 2014 I am trying to lower phosphates. I put some in, lowered, but need to go more, and out of reagents. GFO been in for 2 days now. Is it done? Regeneration is the next step in the process i guess, if you can at all.

gmerek2 February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 I let mine go a month or two. I can tell it stops working because I can see extra green algae develop on the glass sections I don't clean

AlanM February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 Right. I just bought some after the stuff Orion gave me worked well. It aint cheap. In my tank i feel like what is happening is that the gfo lowers phosphate, which causes some algae dieoff, which releases more, etc...
Origami February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 It's all about capacity, Doug. If the phosphates are high, then it'll get used up fairly quickly. You really need a test kit to see when it's lost its potency. Regenerating GFO is really not that costly if you get a good source of lye which can be found for as little as a couple of bucks a pound (in bulk) at lyedepot.com. sachabballi reef February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 Since when. At $200 a gallon, I would not call it "cheap" I agree...definitely not cheap. I try to do , a really big water change when I change my gfo to lower them more. What's your phosphate source most likely? I think mine is my brs pukani rock. AlanM February 7, 2014 Share February 7, 2014 I happen to have a large amount of food grade sodium hydroxide. Do you have a reliable source of instruction for regenerating the gfo, Tom?
