epleeds August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 My daughter went to the county fair with my mother and now I have two goldfish. I guess the 200 gallon reef wasn't enough. Never had goldfish, so here are a few questions... Do they need a heater? How often should i feed? I have an HOB with a filter on a 10 gallon tank for the two fish. How long should I expect them to live? Is the RODI water sufficient for them? I have been using it for a few days with no side affects.. thanks
Coral Hind August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 I never used a heater for mine. I feed them daily unless they were kept outside then don't feed during winter as they kind of hibernate and the food can rot inside them. RODI is not needed, tap water that is de-chlorinated is fine. Just check the pH and ammonia, nitrite like any new tank. I have had goldfish that lived over eight years. Is it a common goldfish or a fancy goldfish?

Jan August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 They can be kept in the toilet, that's how resilient they are. Keep up with water changes and you'll be fine.
freshfins August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 They like hard water, so dechlorinated tap is better than RO. As adults they should have a minimum of 10 gallons per fish. No heater necessary. They need well aerated water, especially when it's warm. Feed once/day with a day off each week. They need veg in their diet. Some will eat lettuce if they were raised to take it, most will eat duckweed, anacharis, cooked and shelled peas are great. Give them the veg at least once/week with a good goldfish pellet food. 10 yrs is a typical fancy goldfish lifespan.
flooddc August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 Depending on what you have. Common goldfish (comet, shubunkin or feeder fish) don't require a heater. If it's a fantail (fancy goldfish) you will need a heater (winter) unless your home is constant above mid 70's degrees. Fancy goldfish might not survive prolong cold temperature. Common goldfish kept in aquarium don't grow too big (about 6 inches) so 10G will do for a while. But in a pond, they grow much larger 12+". Keep your hob filter clean weekly or bi-weekly to reduce frequent water changes.
Djplus1 August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 This is why I never had a fish tank growing up. Idea of cleaning up after goldfish never appealed to me. Of course now I'm likely to sell plasma to get a hold of some reef gear, so to each his own.
sachabballi reef August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 Good lord this $0.25 fish is a lot of work Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 4
epleeds August 18, 2013 Author August 18, 2013 Actually I think it cost Grandma about $15 for the .25 cent goldfish.
steveoutlaw August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 Well, good thing you didn't have reef tank maintenance to keep you busy.......now you can spend all your time with the goldfish!!
sachabballi reef August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 Actually I think it cost Grandma about $15 for the .25 cent goldfish. Lol poor grandma....tell her next time to get a puppy... Hopefully you have an extra 10 gallon kicking around?
sachabballi reef August 18, 2013 August 18, 2013 My niece had two mollies that kept having babies and they all just ate them every time....it was like an auto feeder...
epleeds August 18, 2013 Author August 18, 2013 Lol poor grandma....tell her next time to get a puppy... Hopefully you have an extra 10 gallon kicking around? yea. i actually had a 10 gallon that used to house her hermit crab that died after a week. now its housing goldfish. oh joy...
treesprite August 19, 2013 August 19, 2013 I hate goldfish. I used to be the aquatics person at a Petco and got sick of the hundreds of feeder fish that come in in huge plastic bags of what is basically liquid ammonia. Every day I had to pick out dead goldfish from those tanks. When you feed them to turtles and 2 turtles play tug-of-war over them, the scales come off and it looks like sparkly glitter coming off of them into the water. My niece had two mollies that kept having babies and they all just ate them every time....it was like an auto feeder... They are great to keep in a large reef tank, because not only do they produce live food, but eat algae as well.
Orion August 19, 2013 August 19, 2013 With all the work this goldfish is going to require, you might as well get an APEX on that 10g too.
Enkay August 19, 2013 August 19, 2013 Goldfish are easy to keep. Very resilient. Tap water, no heater (as long as water temp is 65 and over) and a whole lot of duckweed for them to eat. You do need to clean the tank often as they do eat a lot of food resulting in a lot of poop. Depending on the size, you might need to upgrade from a 10 to a 20 or 30.
sachabballi reef August 19, 2013 August 19, 2013 Maybe they should stay with grandma at her house so its a great to visit them lol Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 4
TheyCallMeMr.703 August 20, 2013 August 20, 2013 I wonder what the 10Gallon will be having in it next... Really tho', everything that is said above... but You'll Soon learn, Goldfish are dirtyPoopMachines.

Hilary August 20, 2013 August 20, 2013 I really like this idea.... Lol, Or do what I do.... I keep my Betta's Atop the Pooper. RandomFactOfTheNight. LOL - my betta tank is also on top of the toilet tank..... I bought feeder goldfish at 10 for $1 a couple of years ago and still have four that thrive in RODI with flakes, no heater and less-than-frequent water changes. I'll have to try the veggies. I did throw a little cory catfish in with them to help keep the bottom cleaned up.

Not worried if they don't live till term. I could always replace them with smaller ones

londonloco August 20, 2013 August 20, 2013 My hubby has a small 1500 gallon pond outside, which I "consult" on for free . If it is a Comet it can grow up to 25 inches, a Shubunkin can grow up to 18 inches, a fantail goldfish can grow up to 4-5 inches. The reason most goldfish don't grow as big as they should is directly related to water quality. Poor water quality stunts their growth. Don set up his pond last year, I bought thirty five 13 cent feeder fish from petco, most Comets, we were lucky to get a few Shubunkins in the mix, 17-ish survived the winter. Don bought six 6$ three to four inch comets/shubumkinsm, three survived the winter. Today, Don's fish are 1-2" larger than my "feeder" fish. Feed them once a day, no need for a filter, and weekly water changes will keep them for awhile. But if you really want to keep them healthy, bring them to someone who has a pond and let them have them. Good lesson for the kids.
AlanM August 20, 2013 August 20, 2013 (edited) Seems like rodi water would have no buffering capability and ph would swing a lot. Edited August 20, 2013 by AlanM

Wow, must of been tired, you DEF need a filter, oversized one is best. Meant to say no need for a heater....sorry.
