monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 (edited) Did you mean lightening (like dimming) or lightning (elec charge)? If lightning, so the light will emit flashes of bright light to simulate actual lightning? So cool if that's what you meant!!! Must get video up of it, please.well both actually. so you can set lightening and cloud coverage so right before the lightening "strike" the "cloud" cover gets thick and the whites will dim a bit then a large burst of bright light will hit. you can set it to happen across the entire unit or have the lightening more sectioned off on individual channels so you only see it in a small area of the tank. i dont have personal video and this doesn't really dramatize it like it looks over a tank but here's a sample of what i'm talking about with this controller and dave's lights. fast forward to 3:40. howaboutme September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 I am giggling out loud out of excitement. Very nice toy. You can have storm viewing parties at your house with some chips and dip and beer. It'll be fun! Can't wait to see it on your tank. Maybe it can simulate a tropical storm. All you need is to set your pumps to create a huge wave! Nice job.
ridetheducati September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 Cannot forget the 12" sub that goes down to 18hz to feel the thunder.
AlanM September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 It hadn't occurred to me that the huge number of channels available on the Storm X could be used for left to right sunrise/sunset. Very cool. That's going to be my next purchase, I think.
sachabballi reef September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 Well done. Your patience astounds me Everytime I read this build thread I shake my head in amazement....it truly is astounding your level or not only patience but attention to detail....after reading this I feel like I need to be checked for ADHD.....LOL..... incredible job my friend...oh and the TOYS!!!....I can't wait for the first storm party...!!!

Nice job.haha, that'd be something. i'll wait and see how the fish react. i know there's a lot of debate over if it stressed fish out but the videos i've seen of fish during the "lightning storms" don't even seem to notice, if at all get spooked. the cloud cover i do like though. you can have a cloud move left to right, right to left which is neat as often as you want. i do wish that it were easier to do, though. at the moment, i have to tell the controller to combine a single or bundle of channels together and how often to do the clouds. and if i want to move that cloud left to right i need to time it across the a banks with a ramp delay 10 seconds left to right on the channels (however fast you want that cloud to move). Cannot forget the 12" sub that goes down to 18hz to feel the thunder.dude. i don't think i've owned a sub that goes below 20Hz. you got some fancy av gear? i'll bring the tank and LEDs or maybe it's easier if you bring the sub haha That would be BA. agreed! It hadn't occurred to me that the huge number of channels available on the Storm X could be used for left to right sunrise/sunset. Very cool. That's going to be my next purchase, I think.last time you were here i hadn't tinkering with the light much but now i got a pretty solid understanding and can show you all the options if you want to play with it prior to buying yours. AlanM September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 oh, and rock arrived!!! pictures next... !! If you get fish in there before I do, I'm going to be p-o'd.
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 so my cerameco vida rock arrived earlier today! big boxes - hopefully well protected structures... let's get these things open! so really well packaged, it actually was a bit of a pain to get the structures out but thankfully the foam was within plastic bags to keep it from adhering to the structures. only way to get the ceramic pieces out was to remove the box sides and remove the bags of foam carefully. glad this came freight as i'm sure UPS/FedEx would have found a way to destroy them one way or another. i ended up with only one broken piece about six inches long that was an overhang that i found where it situates and will stick back on with some epoxy. really impressed it was as minimal damage as that. the frag holes were intelligently located and not just randomly drilled all over the place, too, which i was worried about losing a lot of the aesthetic to over drilling. and the purple color looks fine, too. nothing incredibly awesome about it but looks natural and is easier on the eye than the alternative. going to see about getting these situated in the tank and complete my aquascape today!
AlanM September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 It's seriously so cool. Everyone should have a semi truck pull up and dump aquarium supplies off on their driveway.
ridetheducati September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 dude. i don't think i've owned a sub that goes below 20Hz. you got some fancy av gear? i'll bring the tank and LEDs or maybe it's easier if you bring the sub haha I built my home theater room, with nine foot screen, from the studs up to sound treatments and bass traps on the wall. My sub goes to 16hz, but I run it at 18hz. Very crisp bass that penetrates the body to the bone.
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 !! If you get fish in there before I do, I'm going to be p-o'd. not likely, don't fret. i did consider a clown pair after some dr. tim's lovin' but will likely just wait it out like normal and as seems to be popular here recently. i need to make a fish list and will piggy-back off some great ideas in isaac's thread. i want to build up my nitrifying bacteria up to handle tossing several quarantined and treated fish at once. It's seriously so cool. Everyone should have a semi truck pull up and dump aquarium supplies off on their driveway. haha, I KNOW! i was ridiculously excited, to be frank. sliding across the hallway floor in my socks all giddy to race outside and help unload. pretty exciting stuff for a fish nerd I built my home theater room, with nine foot screen, from the studs up to sound treatments and bass traps on the wall. My sub goes to 16hz, but I run it at 18hz. Very crisp bass that penetrates the body to the bone. "sounds" impressive. i tried my hand with some martinlogan components and i have that depth subwoofer which really is nice but you have some serious experience and know-how it seems that i could learn a thing or two from i bet. now i have two reasons to stop by again!
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 oh, should i just use some black egg crate on the legs of the structures? i had them make them elevated off the base so flow wouldn't have too much trouble and could get any detritus off the mostly bare bottom. i will have some sand a mix of pink fiji and hawaiian black, though. just don't want to put the ceramic rested on the bottom pane of the glass even if the structures do have perfectly flat bottoms. or since elevated mostly, should i?
AlanM September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 Maybe this is crazy, but could you put frag discs, like plugs with no stem, on the bottoms of the structures as kind of feet that you won't see? Then the flat bottoms will be elevated a smidge and you can blow a tube from a powerhead under them to get doodoo out when you wanted, but they would blend in.
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 i would think so but it doesn't really solve the problem of not having an item that can easily scratch or damage the bottom pane as part of the equation. i would think egg crate would be much less likely to do any damage if a structure got bumped or moved but those squares would hold detritus much worse than a solid flat plug. there wll be a ton of flow, so i dont know?
smallreef September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 What about those little rubber feet? I think you can get them without the double sided tape on them...
sachabballi reef September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 It's seriously so cool. Everyone should have a semi truck pull up and dump aquarium supplies off on their driveway. its worth a few bucks in bribe to get them to bring into the house....LOL....its good to be a girl...
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 What about those little rubber feet? I think you can get them without the double sided tape on them... ohhh. yes! can't see why that wouldn't be just the ticket and i have some rubber discs and some kydex discs in various diameters that might just do it. thanks!
sachabballi reef September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 What about those little rubber feet? I think you can get them without the double sided tape on them... thats what I was thinking of too...first thing that pooped into my mind and if you want them higher combine both ideas and put the flat frag plug and the rubber foot attached to that....
monkiboy September 18, 2013 Author September 18, 2013 what about just some clear 3/8" thick clear acrylic squares? the kydex i got had methanol all over it and don't want to risk using it. thought maybe it'd make it look like the structures were floating...eh? eh?
smallreef September 18, 2013 September 18, 2013 (edited) I like that idea! Now I'm thinking of cutting some PVC and siliconing it to the bottoms of mine to lift it off the sand ...hhhrrrmmmmm Edited September 18, 2013 by smallreef
