I agree. Great photos, but I like detailed write-ups the most.

His Lighting: 400W 20K XM metal halide x2, 110W Super Actinic VHO x2, and 3W Cree Royal Blue x20.

that was a really nice tank, but the write up for it was a bit lacking compared to previous ones.

I thought so too.

Even if the colors are saturated, its still really nicely grown out and nicely thought out.

IF I had to judge TOTM's, I certainly wouldn't say that this tank is nicely planned out. It's a hodge podge of corals seemingly randomly placed. It certainly is a nice tank, but if it were up to me, there have been much nicer ones in the past. They (RC) might have the same issues as WAMAS- not enough tanks to choose from for TOTM.

There are nicer tanks than this one here on WAMAS. Anyone remember Gadgets old tank or Reefhunters? Even Bob (rocko) has a nicer tank than this one.

I don't know what hodge podge means but it is a lot of corals, most of them are really nice. I want to see gadgets tank your talking about. Bob still has that 14' efflo hogging the left side of his tank! (bob frag the dag gone thing for christ sake) They might have had the same issues as wamas and of course there have been better tanks in the past. What about bobs tank do you think is better? I think the variety and color of corals and how well they are grown out is what makes a good sps tank, and that guy did a good job with all of that. That's my novice opinion.

I would disappointed if my tank looked like this one.

I agree- those color saturated sticks are nauseating. LPS all the way!

Hmm. Is it April Fool's? When you get into really beautiful tanks, it's obviously dependent on what each person's preference is but to say that this tank isn't spectacular is foolish. It might not be what YOU want but it is a healthy, vibrant, amazing tank. I hope to one day disappoint you when my tank looks this hodge podge and post processed

I was hoping they were joking!!! I would die for a tank like that. Maybe someday.

Some people just don't like colored sticks. Although I don't like the scape, looks like a fruit bowl, the corals are awesome.

It's the end of the world today and frankly I expect a better TOTM.

It is a nice tank, it's got pretty colors even though they have been oversaturated, and the corals appear to be healthy and have begun to show their true growth forms. But to say it's spectacular is embellishing the truth a bit. It would be nicer if there were about half the amount of corals and you could actually see some of the structure. As it sits now, it appears to be the typical 'rock wall' of placement that you see in the majority of peoples tanks. But as I suspect, it might have won because there wasn't too many to choose from.

How do you think my tank got TOTM......?

I'm also part of the NCOS (National Capital Orchid Club) here in DC and there's a live judging event at each of our monthly meetings for 6 categories. There's top 3 (1st-3rd) in each category and in the end the head judge gives a 'Best in Show' award. One of our categories is 'First Bloom' which would be equivalent to ATOTM (amateur tank of the month) to showcase young tanks or tanks from newbies. And sorry, I prefer amateur as opposed to 'worst tank' which has a negative connotation. My tank was setup in August & I know it doesn't look like you guys who've done it for a decade+, but I would not nominate or volunteer myself for 'Worst'. Amateur suggests room for improvement (hence the feedback) and 'worst' is everyone say why it's bad/ugly. And why stop there? Large tank (maybe tanks >200 gal?), seasoned tank (maybe >5 yrs?), etc. and still do 'Best in show'. And if you're having difficulty getting participation, why not do it less often like a tank of the fall/spring or seasons or meeting months? Also, the orchids that won 1st in our meetings go on to compete in competitions with other cities (if there is one at the time). But being that we can't drag our tanks along on the road, we can still cross post pics with other cities' forums if we wanted to for a vote or an impartial judge. The last part is probably too much for WAMAS but just thought I give some insight into what other orgs are doing.

I'm not that competitive (about my tank), but that's a cool way to keep things interesting Minh

I'm not with my tank either. I love seeing & reading about other ppl's tanks and getting ideas so the TOTM is quite helpful. I don't think we should do the 1st-3rd rankings but definitely different categories, and would love others' input on what I'm doing wrong & right but know it has potential because it was featured. But TOTM doesn't really offer newbies like me that option. We have to hope that one day our tanks look good enough to be TOTM or risk being embarrassed.

Minh-

I think if you want to know what a great tank looks like, the best ones are in Takashi Amano's "Nature Aquarium World" book.

There have been a small handful of reef tanks that have been in this league.
