  1. 127,000 views on the 150g Marineland DD. How about that. I wonder where that ranks overall in the dedicated tank forum or on the boards in total!
  2. I used to have 2 radions over a 150g 3x3 tank with SPS. 1 400w MH dominated them in both color (20k bulb) and growth rate. radions produced less heat, used less electric, and had fancy setting ability, but the 400w MH and annual bulb cost was cheap compared to the cost of 2 new radions. I think if I were to go non-sps, i would be fine with LEDs like the radions, but having had radions and a 400w MH over SPS and seeing the vast (not even close) growth rate difference, MH all the way.
  3. Tom, just saw this. I hope your recovery is going well and as pain free as possible. Best wishes. -Ryan
  4. Aw. I miss you man. We'll see. This one might sit in storage for a bit until I can get up the finances to set it up. It's a big one...
  5. Thanks guys. On hold at the moment. He can't decide if he's going to sell or not.
  6. I might be getting a new tank and need to transport it from Gainesville to Ashburn. Before I rent a truck from u-haul, I thought I'd see if anyone here had a truck and wanted to make some cash first. Thanks, Ryan
  7. 6500k light bulb worked great for me.

  10. Are you suggesting that - if I have a perfectly QTed, healthy, and parasite-free Powder Blue Tang -- And I put him into my 40g breeder... and he is happy for 1 year... and I then stress the crap out of him... move him from tank to tank... strobe lights on the tank... and Justin Beiber playing 24/7... there is no chance he'll get ich? I was under the belief that it would develop under those circumstances. No?
  11. I've decided to take down this tank. Haven't been able to conquer a cyano outbreak that's been going on for several months now. Tried the chemical method, which has worked for me before, tried less food, tried lights out, tried more flow and less flow, tested my water, no clue the cause. I'm also not as into the tank with just PC lighting and zoanthids more of less, and a couple of tiny fish. Coming from the 150g, this tank has never felt that fulfilling for me, and my son really isn't in to it like I had imagined. Maybe if it was a SPS tank, I would have more interest, or if it was bigger. My son does love Ken's aquarium still though! I'll just take the proceeds from the tank sell-off and put it into my 300g DD savings fund. I'll have a tank for sale thread in the WTS forum sometime in the next few days. I'll start with livestock, then equipment, then the tank/hood/stand last.
  12. Tony - Are you using the Marineland stock canopy, or did you build one? I believe you were hanging your MH reflectors before without a canopy?
  13. I've received fish from more than one LFS who "quarantines" their fish with ich, and I've received some fish without it. I've also received fish from Petco with ich, and some without it. You should QT fish no matter where they come from, and don't buy for one second that a LFS that has a "quarantine" process will guarantee you are receiving an ich-free fish. That's simply not true. You can setup a very cheap 10g QT tank easier than you might think.
  14. Tony - I had 2 radions over a 150g DD. I then switched to a 400w MH w/ Lumenarc III reflector. The tank was 100% SPS. The difference was incredible. In my old tank thread, I took before and after photos with the radions and the 400w MH, after 6 months with each. The SPS were alive under the radions, and they did grow some, but under the MH, they just exploded in growth. The colors were better too. Many SPS lost their colors under LED. Part of the reason I think is that LED light is really directed, like in a beam, but MH light (with a reflector) is just everywhere in the tank. I think that's part of the reason I got better growth all around the corals - due to less shading. That and the fact that a 400w MH light is much more powerful (PAR) than a bunch of tiny LEDs. I had to remove my marineland canopy to hang the MH b/c the canopy wouldn't hold it. Another WAMAS member with a 300g DD tried LEDs over SPS and switched back to 400w MHs as well. When the day comes that I finally get a 300g DD, I am going to go with 400w MHs again, but I'd like to find slim MH reflectors that will fit inside the canopy (I prefer the look of a tank w/ a canopy than with a lighting hanging from the ceiling). Anyway, just something to keep in the back of your mind if you see a good deal on 400w MHs or anything.
  15. Tony what types of corals are you going for?
  16. Another person who gave LEDs the boot and the results are very clear. Looks awesome Mike.
  17. read this: http://netclub.athiel.com/cyano/cyanos2.htm maybe it's your water source/reservoir.
  18. and you're running the lights minimal after the w/c? and not feeding daily? what water are you using? not tap right? is it ro/di? are your filters good? di good? if distilled, could it be the water as the source?
