since we all appear to be from around the same areas i was curious as to the best place to buy fish and other saltwater supplies. the local store here is nice but they sell out so quick once they get their shipments. if you dont get to the fish the day they come in you are SOL.

suggestions??

Look in the top right corner for a map of Local LFS's. Green pins are sponsors, almost all of which are great and I would suggest, the rest aren't necessarily bad and are definitely places to check out too.

Yep, Pacific East is great place, Dr. Mac and Kyle wont steer you wrong. The shop is amazing, its mostly coral but they do have good prices on fish as well.

Roozens, best place ever, second to none. With every purchase you get a free prize. Customer service leaves a lasting impression.

I like Roozens but it's a little strange. I don't recommend it for new people to the hobby. You need to know what you are looking at and what it should cost. There are good fish and good deals to be had there.

If you dont have a quarantine tank setup or are prepared to set one up, I would not recommend Roozens. Great selection, but you have to be careful.

Roozen's has always been my favorite.

Better selection than anyone. You'll see things there you will never see anywhere else, and you will see more of most fish there than other places (last time I was there he had at least 200 hippo tangs)

Typical prices are "good". Often really good. (I have bought achilles tangs there for $38...pairs of blank tanks for $28 for the pair, etc)

Quality for fish as good or better than anyone on a % basis.

Wouldn't hesitate to send a newbie there. I went there when I was a newbie.

Wouldn't hesitate to go there with no quarantine tank. I've never had one!

My fish from there have as good or better survival rate as my fish from anywhere else.

that must have been a H-E-double hockey sticks of a long time ago on the achilles tangs--i just called there and they are $150 each.

are you going into politics?

Best place to buy fish is other Wamas members' tanks.

That's a broad statement... I have seen plenty of unhealthy fish in other members tanks. Mainly tangs. The best thing to do is shop around, and don't buy a fish that is not eating regardless where you are getting it from.

It was maybe 5 years ago, but they were always $38 or $48 (when everyone else had them for over $100...if you could find one)...small or medium sized. I had a couple for years that I bought there at different times from different salespeople (Larry and Jos).

To have more than tripled in price seems crazy...my gut tells me if you went in and talked to the right person, they would be much less than that...

The problem was availability...they only had them at certain times of the year (when they are being more actively collected for some reason possibly?). Maybe they are cheaper during that time.

I strongly disagree with this statement. Not to mention your selection is limited to what people have and whenever there selling it.

In general, I like buying fish from other members too. When I was looking for a tang, I took a bunch of heat for it for some reason.

For the most part, a fish from a hobbyist has gone through the initial acclimation process following shipping and has acclimated to tank life. As a result, losses tend to be lower than from a store that is usually selling fish that were imported not that long ago.

Very good point.

yah, i spoke with Jos yesterday. I mentioned to him the price of $40 and he acted like they've never been that price (obviously they have or you'd have never bought them there).

i was ready to drive there RIGHT now and buy one :)

I believe ya...things obviously change, and it has been several years, but that was the normal price "back then". Those fish were almost impossible to find anywhere, and I was happy I could get them from Roozens at a price I was willing to pay.

I did do most of my business with Larry, but I distinctly remember buying an Achilles from Jos and having a long discussion about it's care and feeding, and where his supplier is, and when they harvest and ship Achilles when I bought it, and I know it was either $38 or $48. I've never spent more than that on any fish in my life, other than a Sohal I coughed up $99 for at EA. Jos and I even discussed how expensive they were (if you could find them) at other LFS!

Jos was definitely the guy who sold me the pair of black clowns for $28, too. He tried really hard to sell me a giant 1 foot anemone at that time, too (think he said it was from Vietnam, which doesn't mean it was), but I didn't want it.

Haha that's awesome. I'm here now...incredibly unimpressed. Tanks look filthy, livestock unhappy and unhealthy from why I can see, and I just heard that the Achilles I inquired about over the phone monday was $150 when i called and another member just came here yesterday and asked about the same one (only one here) and was quoted $350.

No prices on tanks either. Interesting.

I'll inquire more but so far I'm not seeing much worth my trip.

That's why I said you need to know what you are looking for/at when you go in. They move a lot of quantity, so there is good stuff in with the not so good. Also, you need to know fair prices and sometimes you get different prices from different people. I got a great deal on a pair of nicely colored true percs - less than some shops sell one for for the both of them. I've also gone in several times and left with nothing because there wasn't anything in at a price I wanted to pay that day.
