My last couple were over $450, but that wasn't an option. I think a lot of it is because the house leaks and my A/C unit is very inefficient. I'm working on getting that down though ... lots of fans on the tank to minimize how much the chiller is running.

My bill is way more in the summer and less in the winter. So, I averaged. BUT - I am about to start up a 120 with 500 watts of HD. I expect my bill to go up $30/month. Based on what I have heard, I may be optimistic.

Huh, I think we should open a new topic on how to optimize your saltwater fish tank's power consumption.....

The only good thing I see about living in my apartment, is that there is NO electric bill! Part of the reason it's taking me so long to find a new place to live is that I'm trying to find another place where there is not an electric bill!

Brian, I have this exact problem. My AC is hooked up to the central air in a 1200 Sq. Ft. apartment. I swear the AC isn't rated for this much square feet. I keep the thermostat set at 76 and on the warmer days my AC would run 24/7 to keep up.

Mine averages around $200 but my home is just over 3800 SF and I keep it at 71 year round. The house is not quite two years old however which makes a huge difference, and it is single story with a finished basement.

$204/month on average in 2008. $104 on average in 2006 (before tank). (Remember, it was a different time with different rates for electricity, so this isn't all associated with the tank.) House is heated by gas and that help keep the electric bill down in the winter months. Three stories, finished basement, probably around 4000 sf or so. Built in 1998.

Averaging $335

3000sqf house

5 family members and that many computers.

3 kids who don't realize light swtches work in the down position also.

Hey Chip, do you run AC in the house? If so, what do you keep your thermostat at?

Our bill is also around $330 for a 1200sqf with AC @76. It just doesn't sound right to me. Although maybe Maryland has worse rates than Virginia.

76 here too plus ceiling vans in BR's and kitchen.

5x 250w mh

750w of 03

1 hammer head pump

multiple internal water flow devises

1/3 hp chiller

52" plasma thats comes on and stays on as long as someone is awake

We wash and dry about 8 loads of laundry a week and run the dishwasher6x a week.

My family is a firm believer of "turn it on and leave it on" until Dad finds it on.

I can come on some evenings and the ONLY light not on in the WHOLE house is one in a closet. I'm sure my wife did not go in there after I turned it off or it too would be on.

Happens multiple times a month. Plus there's a note that the Mrs took the kids out shopping and will be home soon. Then I get a call, "you want me to stop at Maggianos and pick up dinner"?

Bear in mind, I said average and my "buget plan" is $325.00 a month.

August bill actualy came to $445.00 and last bill was actually $265.00 with little to no a/c run during, but you can bet all the lights were on.

natural gas heat, cooking, and GRILL

Thats a deal Chip!

We pay ~ $600 winter - $350 summer - no kiddies - all lights off whenever we leave the room.

3200sqf - all energy efficient, all electric though.

I just switched to Washinton gas for 10.8c per 1000kWh

I bought a killawatt meter to check things out.

Glad it's not just me with the lights. No kidding, EVERY light will be on, even the basement lights. Even the closet light, both ours and my daughter's. My son can't reach the light switches.

August was my worst, $751, but my house heatpump (4 ton) and greenhouse heatpump (3 ton) ran a lot. Also 4x400w MH, 6x80w T5, 14x39w T5, 12x54w T5, 2x175w MH, 3 hammerhead, 1 dart, 12x6201 streams, many small pumps. Stuff adds up.

September was much better, about $450. House heatpump was off all month, GH heatpump ran very infrequently. I think about $350 of this is for my fish stuff (need to get my killawatt back), 100 for house. Electric range but gas water heater and gas assist heatpump.

3 x 250 MH

1 x 150 MH ( wifes tank )

8 x 39 watt T-5's

Dart pump

6105 Tunze

3 x Seio 1500

  • 3 weeks later...

I don't live near you guys, I am on Long Island New York and we pay 16 cents KWH.

About a year and a half ago I installed solar panels on my roof which cut my bill by about $110.00 a month.

There are large rebates for these systems and if you have to pay someone to install it for you, you may break even in five years.

My system cost me $23,000.00 of which I got back $20,000.00 in rebates and taxes with in a few months.

(I installed it myself)

A couple of months ago I installed a very efficient gas furnace, it is 96% efficient. It cost about $4,000 for me to install it which included all the plumbing, hot water tank, and pumps. I received $1,3.00 back in a rebate and will get most of the rest back in taxes. It will save me almost half of my heating bill which used to cost me almost $4,000.00 a year.
