  1. Only problem with lots of practice, glass drill bits don't last forever. 10gal is a tough tank to drill, but a cheap drill press increases success by a huge margin. I don't recall cracking a 10gal, but have busted a few smaller ones(2.5, 5, 1/2-10gals, etc). This is similar to my press except mine is only a 3speed: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Disp...temnumber=44506 I use the lowest setting, support the inside of the tank, lubricate with a hose trickling over the pane I am drilling. Thin glass and hand held drill deflection are a bad combination. Best of luck.
  2. It is a rare instance they will not at least recover some symbiotic algae if there is light, food, and nitrogen available; but it does happen and know of at least 2 instances where BTAs remain ghost white for many years. Picking up what is traditionally thought of as UV pigments, not sure if those "leak" from neighbors. Toss it in Chip's tank and see what happens :D Was some notes in the Tridacna cultering methods which included blenderizing clam mantles in the same manner. We have discussed a few times on RC, using a syringe to implant some symbiotic algae from a doner anemone....don't know of anyone that has tried. More likely, we have not found the right ghost white specimen
  3. Yep, I guess it is tough going from Mr.4K to Mr.4g
  4. Remember it well, unfortunately did not go well long term.
  5. Very neat Might have to try some in high flow/intense light myself.
  6. Many times, and likely many more times in the future.
  7. I had 4 remotes and the monitor.....they live in the trash. Intermittent, inaccurate, and a down right inconvenience.
  8. Tunze Osmolator 3155, there is no substitute.
  9. No doubt, better safe then sorry. Still not sure it is the/only problem, but circumstantial evidence is present fwiw: Caught a 3" cowrie eating my S. haddoni in the middle of the night myself. Don't see it listed often on predator lists, but I caught mine in the act.
  10. Looks like an upset S. haddoni. Symptoms do appear to be coral injury, but they also consistent with some level of predation. If it continues to show distress and or the size of the affected area increases, assume a predator since it does not appear to be in an area with aggressive coral. Make sure it is getting some flow to wash away heavy sliming and prevent bacteria growth. Also, make sure it is not getting kalk, or other supplements dropped on it, touching heaters, etc. fwiw: typical predators, cowrie snails, eunice worms, shrimp, fish, etc.
  11. Sorry for the back to back loses :( fwiw: Might want to let the tank settle back down a bit. A healthy BTA can recover from unfathomable abuse, getting cut into pieces going through an overflow, pump intakes sucking half into the impellers, etc. fwiw2: have maintained countless numbers of clowns, literally countless and have yet to have one choke to death, fair to say such an event is uncommon. Very very small clowns, <1/2" have been known to eat so much they die though. All the best in your efforts and again I would give the tank a break for a bit, it sounds like something might not be quite right. Good luck. EDIT: fwiw3: clowns will jump out, but in my experience they are scared or chased out of the tank.
  12. Hey...why isn't my ban button working? Oh..this IS wamas...Carry on.
  13. General rule for anemone to clowns sizing is 3:1. Maroons can be quite rough on the anemones, especially when the anemone is not large enough for them. If the anemone can get it's foot and column into a cavelike protected area, it should be fine as long as the clowns are not biting off all the tentacles.
  14. Nice finds Excellent support of local schools. /salute
  15. As one of my favorite corals, I try to keep up with the new data. Have a link to conclusive evidence on host base survival needs? Thanks in advance.
  16. BRK has them and might be closest to you in South Riding as well.
  17. I have two 44gal with lids you can borrow. Out in Sterling, VA though so it may cost more in gas
  18. Advert by google on the last linked page: Dwarf Lionfish On Sale Buy Live Fresh and Saltwater Fish. 100% Guaranteed. Free Fish Care Kit www.bluezooaquatics.com Ironic no?
  19. Quite a few years back, I had all my tanks stocked with rock and sand from Dale. He always sent my high quality stuff and I cant recall any issues with my numerous orders over the years. Been thinking about setting up a biotope myself, but time has eluded me :>( Best of luck and I hope it works out for you.
  20. Khanh, I'd toy with bulb/ballast combo's prior to jumping off onto T5, your tank is fairly deep. I don't recall the ballasts you are running, but you are always welcome to play with 2 blueline ballasts if you like. My schedule is wacky over the summer, but you know where I live Cheers, Scott
  21. I have (2) 400wt eBallast(s). Located in N.Va but you can likely borrow them until the fall if needed.
  22. UPS fwiw: My main back up system is data center class, APC MX3000XR on a 30amp circuit. Not something you see every day in a home. This system will run the basics for 24hrs, but it is not an efficient use of funds unless you are using it to front home servers, electronics, etc as well. If you are in an extended outage, get the battery powered air pumps and stock up on batteries. Biggest issues with the air pumps in permanent installation: testing and making sure the airlines/stones are not clogged with debris when you need them. If you need more then the air pumps, generator is really the only option.
  23. It will work, but it is not going to last as long as you would hope. As pressure in the tank drops, flow will decrease. You'll need a proper regulator system to increase efficiency. You'll need much larger bottles at very high pressure to run hours on multiple feeds. Normally closed solenoids are available from AquaticEco: http://www.aquaticeco.com/ fwiw: After running the numbers a few years back, it was cheaper and more effective to buy 6 battery operated backup pumps.
  24. Unbelievable Cliff, quite a fine job Much thanks.
  25. Nice hauler :>) fwiw: I don't think they'll have enough, but I can use up to 8 if they have them :D
