  1. My goes to 3/4 since I want the high light coral to get closer to the LEDs. I don't have fancy LEDs so I believe they are not as strong. I am setting up an aggressive tank and I was going to have LR to the top but was told that would not be a good idea since I am getting an eel. I'm told they like to climb out of the tank.
  2. I had once cut up 2in" pieces of 1.5" PVC pipe, stand them up on the bottom of the tank and placed the LR above it. Cover up with sand and you don't see the pipes.
  3. So I was a LFS last week and saw this great looking LR for sale. Could not resist getting it, all 11 pounds of it! It has been years since I had to deal with cycling anything so I've some questions. I've put this rock in a tub with Maxjet 1200, heater and simple light to cure. Nitrite is now at 3, after 5 days. Any guess as to how many more day's it would take to complete the cycle ? Do I have to wait for Nitrate, which I have not tested yet, to be zero before adding it to my system ? Should I be changing the water in this tub or would that mess the cycling up ?
  4. Regarding tomorrow's meeting. I've not been to one for years so I don't know if the organizers provide name tags to "newbie" like me. I look forward to meeting folks I have communicated with in this forum. I have not met many of them but will recognize their Avatar in this forum. Would it be a good idea if we print out a pic of our Avatar and paste it to a name tag at the meeting ?
  5. Are you sure you have to recycle your LR ?
  6. Cool, thanks for the pics, taiscici. I see you did quite a bit of retro fitting to your Deltec. Bubble blaster pump .... looks like the $55 I spend on last Friday at Petco for the 55G is about to turn into $550 in one week
  7. The tank of BTAs in the pic only has BTAs and 2 clowns, no corals. However, my DT with corals has a BTA that "bubbles" and that BTA has right next to a waving hand and mushroom; I don't think either would create warfare though.
  8. Currently I only need one of the 2 skimmer pumps the 600 comes with. Have you considered using the outlet for the second pump for "output", there by having 2 put puts ? Could post or pm me a pic of your skimmer ?
  9. You use a Mag 24 and that is not too powerful ? How many GPH is that ? While I want to pass a lot of water through the skimmer, in the sump, I am already constantly dealing with the skimmer overflowing due to too much water. I only have a only a Mag 2 return to the DT and using gravity from the overflow to feed directly to the Deltech 600. I am thinking of making the Deltech 600 totally external, have a pump run water to the intake and the output from the skimmer to flow back to the sump via gravity. I was wonder what GPH pump I should use for that.
  10. Do you have a pic of your anemone ? I started with one and now have many. Some bubble and some don't. It would appear that light intensity appears to be the determining factor as I have noticed that those closer to the top have bubbles and those at the bottom don't. I have LEDs in this tank.
  11. Who's up for a group catch ? We can sell them and buy a Gem Tang or two !
  12. Is compatibility with a Lion only base on size and speed ? Do we have be been concerned about the fish being stung by the lion ?
  13. Since they are from different Tang families, Acanthuridae and Flavescens, they should be fine, in the long run, assuming the tank size is correct. I have a 5" Powder bully a new 1 and a half inch Sailfin. Rob advised that they will work things out eventually. Took about a week but they are now best friends in my 156G.
  14. Any reason who you would not have the drain water from the DT flow directly to the skimmer using gravity ? Is it not correct to assume that so long as the entry to the external skimmer is below the DT's water level, gravity will move the water to it ?
  15. I am pretty sure the eels I see at area LFS are not in tight lid tanks. Anyone has eels in tanks that have a small opening ?
  16. sit on top..... and die ?
  17. So it sound like it's ok for a Lion and an Eel. Regarding the eel, I keep reading that they need a tight lid. Why is this so ? They don't try to jump out, do they ?
  18. You are correct, I am going with pipes over the top of the tank instead of holes. Ugly but I keep hearing cracking of glass in the back of my head
  19. I am going to make my stand higher by adding cinder blocks to the existing stand. Putting the cinder block at the bottom and framing the base of the tank with 2x4s.
  20. I actually when to Petco to buy another 40 breeder, I was not even going to change the size, but saw a 55 with better dimensions for my use (i.e. narrow tank to put behind my DT ). My primary idea is to remove the skimmer from the sump, making it an external skimmer thereby providing more space for the Lion. Using the 40 breeder to put the external skimmer, fool proof way of not getting a wet floor; the other space for ATO water.
  21. I have it on this forum -> tank redesign
  22. I am planning to change my setup of skimmer in the sump to an external location. I am hoping to rely on good old gravity to move the water in and out of the skimmer. Let's see what other have to suggest.
  23. Thanks for the info, looks like I won't take the chance on drilling my 55G.
  24. This is my current setup, 156G with 44 breeder sump in the back, skimmer in sump. Water from the over flow goes to the skimmer via black tubing, skimmer water flow out to 44G, "clean" water returns to DT from pump on left side of tank. and here's a closeup of the return T on the left and the overflow to the skimmer, on the right. I have a fuzzy dawf lion in the sump. I just bought a 55G 48Lx13Wx21H to replace my 44 breeder sump. Plan to use the 44 as a ato reservoir. I would also like to remove my skimmer, deltec 600, from the sump and place it out side, on the right. I plan to elevate this skimmer so that the output from the skimmer will flow via a tube to the 55G using gravity. I plan to use egg crate to partition off one end, right side, of the 55G for Cheato and return from the skimmer. I would place the return pump on the left side of the 55G to return water to the DT. I am concerned about the water pressure of this proposed design. In particular, the water from the overflow to the skimmer. Am I correct to say that so long as the entry point to the skimmer is 6" or more below the DT's overflow water line water will flow done the tube and up to the skimmer's entry point using gravity ? Please critic this proposed plan. The grand idea is to have a larger aggressive tank / sump in the back of my DT. Oh, all this started with going to Petco's dollar a gallon sale ....... already spent over $250 on new light, etc Thanks.
