  1. You might try calling Capital Aquarium, Reef Escape, Blue Ribbon Koi, or other fish places that do maintenance. Often they have used tanks they'd part with for a reasonable price to make up the space. Also, TheyCallMeMr.703 had some used 120 gallon tanks he was selling, I think. He comes and goes from the forums, but you could search up his posts and contact him. Might get a bargain if you're willing to do a bit of cleanup on it.
  2. I've done the same as others on this thread. Just took off the skimmer cup and let it overflow after dosing chemiclean. Nothing died.
  3. Nevermind. I just read the rest of your post. Editing to remove suggestion. You can't hang from ceiling.
  4. Dinos never came back. I kept up with the UV for the duration. This tank has been down for a year, but after I got rid of them they didn't come back. I don't remember if I dosed the Dino-X that I bought, but I may have. I think they're a problem in a true ultra-low-nutrient-system, but most people who never get nutrients down that low don't seem to ever see them.
  5. I've always just put them down the drain figuring if they don't hurt the fish and coral in the tank they won't hurt the water treatment plant. I wouldn't do that with fish meds, but think it's fine for additives.
  6. Do you live anywhere near Justin Casp on Norbeck? He has freshwater systems in his greenhouse and likely has a lot of grunge from the filters you could use.
  7. I agree with Coastal. Get a small tank, transfer rock into it and then fish and coral. Put a small pump in it to keep it running with a small heater. No need to light it for a few days. Feed very little and make a small water change every few days. It should be fine. Cover the main tank to avoid drywall dust. You could also lift it out of the room to move it once you get everything but the sand out. Drain water into buckets, carry tank out, put that water back in and you’re good.
  8. Final bump for meeting tomorrow. We will have WAMAS t-shirts at the meeting. They're $10 each or two for $15.

  11. Door prize is Ecotech Vectra MP40wqd! All members in attendance get a single entry to the door prize which will be pulled at the beginning of the raffle.
  12. Raffle Items: PE Mysis pellets - Three 4oz bags of 2mm mysis pellets, $15 value each from Piscine Energetics - Three 8oz bags of 3mm mysis pellets, $27 value each from Piscine Energetics
  13. Raffle Items: Three gift certificates to Avast Marine: $100, $50, $25. Thanks Avast!
  14. From time to time we get members wanting to do a battery backup for their 12V aquarium components. I came across this website which lists prices for lots of different battery (and hard drive) combinations and allows you to sort by dollars per kWh of storage. https://battprices.com/?battery_types=sla&condition=new Pretty cool, and there's an AGM 12V battery that would probably be great for keeping some aquarium powerheads up for quite a long time with 1200 Wh of capacity for 180 bucks.
  15. Bump, we are getting raffle prizes in. Setting up for frag sellers is closed. We won't have room for other people to sell.
  16. Bump for this. I'm going to start adding raffle items in the next few days. We're getting an MP40wqd to give away as a door prize. We'll also have coral to give away. I'm hearing from members who would like to sell. We have space for one more member to sell, so please let me know if you'd like to. We are also going to keep doing the free raffle tickets for sponsor purchases up to $500 since the last meeting. For every $25 you've spent at a sponsor since the last meeting you can bring that receipt and get a free raffle ticket at the door up to 20 tickets.
  17. This meeting will be a bit different from most. In addition to our annual reports and the election, we will not have a speaker. Instead we will be doing a screening of the movie "Chasing Coral". Feel free to invite friends and family that you'd like to see the movie. https://www.chasingcoral.com/ We have had a bunch of the people featured in this movie as WAMAS speakers over the years and know others of them from MACNA. I'm trying to arrange for one of the producers to be here as well to answer questions. Since the movie is 90 minutes long and the speakers normally only talk for 75 minutes we may move the schedule around a bit, but will likely try to allow coral sales to keep going on during the movie if we can keep it kind of quiet so that the movie can be heard during the sales. I'll try to have it loud enough for everyone to easily hear it. We'll have some nice coral to give away as raffle prizes so the WAMAS members can go home and keep their own little piece of the reef alive.
  18. True. Mine was 24 inches. I'd use the Steve's LEDs HD heatsinks in 60 inch lengths and attach them to reef brite end brackets. Then I'd put Phillips leds on them for the royal blue at least.
  19. My 180g stand was 40 inches and I thought it was great. I'm 6'3" and couldn't reach the bottom standing next to it, though, so you'll need a step ladder. The real question for me is what lights you're going to use! Hope you didn't spend all your money on that new house if you're going to have to go out and buy 8 Radions now. I've always wanted to do a truly epic DIY LED build. Maybe we should talk. 8)

  21. This is the first announcement of our annual meeting on 2/8/2020. That's a week after Super Bowl Sunday. Normally we would have the winter meeting on 1/25, but we had to move it due to a scheduling conflict. This meeting will be at North Bethesda Middle School in Maryland. I'll post a full meeting thread when more details are known. We will start alternating meetings between Maryland and Virginia from this point on so we expect our April meeting to be in Virginia and Summer to be back in Maryland. The annual meeting is also when we elect club officers. Up for election this year will be President, Membership Director, and Treasurer. I'm currently the president but am not putting my name in to run again. Nikki Bridges is currently the Membership Director and Scott Friedman is the Treasurer. An officer will post a thread looking for nominations for the three offices. Please consider joining the leadership of the club if you have an interest. There will be four past presidents (including me) who are very willing to help get a new president going.
  22. Honestly, I'd just test it first with tap water and let it sit for a week in a spot where you can see all four glass corners. That kind of damage to the silicone inside the tank is not a dealbreaker for me on a used tank. The interior silicone bead is really just to protect the bead that does the work of sealing the tank together, which is sandwiched between the panes. Resealing a tank for that inner bead is no joke and you have to get it more clean than is simple to do in order to get it to stick well. Plus by scraping off the old stuff you're now exposing the actual sealing bead.
