  1. A problem that you will face is that if you move your frag plugs or rack (whatever you are trying to build), you might peel off the plasti dip paint and expose the magnets to saltwater.
  2. For me success in this hobby is the ability to maintain livestock alive & healthy. Once you achieve that then you can tweak things here and there to improve your skills in maintaining tanks.
  3. In my experience, after two DIY fixtures with CREE leds, I am able to keep all corals but some high end SPS frags dont grow well in my tank. I have had some frags that has stayed 1" for over years and it could be something else since I have a nano and keeping Sps there is a big challenge. I am not 100% is the leds but after making a lot of changes in my tank, I am pointing my finger there. Soon, I will be adding a 150w metal halide in addition to my current leds and monitor growth. I will post my results. See piper's thread, he recently added T5's and growth exploted compared to when he only had leds.
  4. Do a search on a product called coral snow. I think there was a guy who had dynos and started dosing this product and reducing the photo period to 4 hours / day for one week. After that, he went blackout for 3 days and the dynos where gone.
  5. You can use it with other types of corals but the method is more oriented for people who wants SPS since these are the most challenging corals to keep.
  6. The way I see it is that when you look at a coral from the top that has been under leds, it looks very nice and colorful but when you look at it on the front, it looks brown or not with the same color. Corals in the wild get their light source at different angles due to sunrise / sunset.
  7. Zeovit is a process developed by a german guy named Thomas Pohl and consists of getting your system into ULNS mode and dose a set of additives to enhance growth, color, quality, etc... Some people say the additives its just snake oil but I disagree.. Before going zeovit, some requirements are to have strong lights, strong skimmer, run carbon (mesh bag or reactor), stabilize CAL, ALK, MAG, PHOS & Potassium (K). These is a good example of a great zeovit tank: http://reefkeeping.com/joomla/index.php/current-issue/article/139-tank-of-the-month
  8. Yeah, or t5/ led combo like the ATI powr module... Another issue with leds is the shadowing effects.
  9. I see growth on most of my corals such as zoanthids, LPS, etc but when it comes to SPS, I can only get birdsnests to thrieve. Some sps like staghorns, milleporas, turaki's dont grow well on LEDS. I have had frags that stay 1" for over 2 years with good color but no growth. I have tried two DIY fixtures and several optics with no luck. My current fixture consists of: - 4 OCW leds (cyan, green & red) = 12 leds - 16 hyper violets - 8 neutral whites - 16 royal blues All these are high quality leds and being driven by good drivers (LDD) at 1A and are over a 24"x24"x9" tank.. Leds are good in terms that you dont change bulbs, no heat transfer and offer great colors but if you really want to go on the big leagues and get high end sps frags (you eventually will do) then you should supplement with T5's and or MH. In the near term, I am planning on supplementing my tank with 4 T5's.
  10. ATI sunpower or powermodule. I went to the LED route twice and growth is slow. People are going back to MH or T5 ...
  11. Tank looks amazing, birds looking good
  12. Just checked alk and its at 8
  13. Well I am dosing Cal & Alk so I will check it today. I ordered a new Salifert test kit as well but will check with my API. What about temperature? I added a new mag2 to the water and I havent monitor it... Can temperature being high cause tip burn? or ful RTN?
  14. Alk is at 9 and yes I read the zeo documentation before I started. Thats how I came along with those dosing quantities. I am currently in the 14 day cycle and according to the documentation, it should be 1 drop a day for 14 days and 1 drop every 3 days after that. thanks for your help guys
  15. I started to use zeovit on my tank on Tuesday and today with no lights I saw some tip burn on one of my SPS. Could it be that I am dosing too much? My daily dosing is as follows: - Zeobak: 1 drop - ZeoStart3: 0.2ml + 0.8 water = 1ml via dosing pump - Zeofood7: 1 drop - 1/3L Zeoliths in a reactor All this is for a 33 gallon tank - 20% (rocks, equipment, etc) ~~ 25 gallons Any help will be appreciated. thanks
  16. Bought mine today! Cant wait to use em
  17. High quality stuff doesnt come cheap!! I might get one
  18. Yep I keep the calibration fluid sealed. Thanks for checking, yeah mine is well under 0...
  19. So i have a refractometr and i calibrated it with 35ppt solution that came with it a while ago. After that, i test fresh ro water and it reads like 5ppt below 0. I know some people calibrate with fresh ro and others with a 35ppt solution. I am now concerned that my calibration solution is bad? For those of you who calibrate with 35ppt solution, whe. You check RO water, does it read at 0? Thanks
  20. Around 20 ml each. I need to take fts. Putting a reminder on my cel
