  1. I'm guessing that he doesn't really want to sell it ... he's just drawing views to his website
  2. What 'bothers' me about the PAR38 bulbs is the dark vs. light areas in the tank. I have DIY LEDs (blue & white only) in my tank but they provide a consistent spread because they are evenly spaced across two heatsinks. The growth is probably the same but the personal preference of a fully lit tank is better for me. Great corals !
  3. that's how I got the canisters removed from my R/O unit .. they work great
  4. I always wait AT LEAST an hour to check the salinity, that gives all the water time to mix together. I don't think I've ever checked the salinity of the sump. Since the fish and corals are all in the DT, that's where I pull my droplet. I will take about 4-5 pulls of water in the "syringe" and push them all back into the tank. Then I take a new syringe full, let a few droplets out and finally add two droplets to the refractometer to get my reading.
  5. I had a 60cube (24"cube) with two MP10s on the back wall. One was 6" in from the side and 12" from the bottom, the 2nd was 6" in from the opposite side and 18" from the bottom. Both were on 50-60% reef crest mode. The tank bottom was crushed coral (fairly large particle size) and I never had a problem with blowing sand. IMO, the water movement in the tank was awesome and my LPS/softie corals did great and looked even better in the flow. Today I'm using those two MP10s as secondary flow in my 120. I have MP40s on the sidewalls and the MP10s are on the back wall on a switch that is turned on when the main pump is off for feeding.
  6. After reading Sam's response I got out my flashlight and looked around the sump - sure enough, I found LOTS of little 'fleas' buzzing around the chunks of rocks. I guess I didn't lose them all from the bag I dumped back in the winter. Thanks for all the responses :-)
  7. Yesterday was my day for a big water change (I missed the last water change) and today I cleaned the skimmer and media reactor. What a weird, but pleasant, surprise when I put the reactor on the counter. I have no real idea, but a suspicion, what is swimming in it but it's pretty neat. And since they have seemed to find a home and FOOD ?? in the reactor, I left them there - But I'll be sure to check on them every day to see if the continue to progress. I don't think any of the pictures show it, the the larger fry seem to have a 'split tail' if this helps anyone ID them. The only known pair that I have in the tank is my B&W "saddleback" clowns and they have spawned several times but I've never seen a free-swimmer in the tank. (For the record, the media reactor is in the sump.) Here's some of the dozen pics I took
  8. I replaced the wall outlet with a GFCI outlet then plugged the Apex into the outlet ..
  9. We got hit a bit earlier than you DC folks .. power went out at 8pm (before the storm hit us) and just came back on about 30m ago. I got the generator running about 7am and the reef is fine but I think I lost a couple Koi in the two ponds. Weird - the "storm" wasn't actually that bad for us; some moderate wind and rain, but nothing nasty.
  10. my addendum to this is move half the 'stuff' to one side, clean that side, let the sump re-settle for a week, then do the same for the other side. It works 'ok' when you don't have spare buckets or tanks to completely empty the sump. As for the cleaning, I use a long piece of vinyl tubing - but I can drain it out my back door because the deck/yard is lower than the sump level. Just start a siphon and clean, clean, clean
  11. They are difficult to see "in real life" but even more so in these pics, but my Black & White Perculas are officially a Pair - they have little tiny wrigglers attached to the rock under the fuzzy mushroom :-) I'm not planning on doing anything with this batch because we'll be gone for an extended time during their next phase - but if the pair does it again in June, I'll try to be more prepared !
  12. a single edge razor blade - see if it will scrape off
  13. From what I read, his hydraulics (for the remote arms) failed and he brought NOTHING back to the surface

  15. This is the best pic I could find showing the RBTA - from Dec 2011. The anemone is near the top of the rock in the center of the pic. Here is the pic of the three anemones peeking out thru the rock (with anemones highlighted) I was able to move two of the three anemones; I left the one in the original position where it was and moved the others to a 'keeper box' I have in the tank.
  16. Yesterday a.m. when I fed the tank, my BIG rose bubble-tip was spread open just as it always is. It probably measured over 8-10" and always reached high for the lights - even though its foot is under the top rock on the pile. This a.m. when I fed, I noticed that it was very small and mostly closed up. After looking a little closer in the tank, I noticed another small RBTA about 4-5" away and toward the right-front side of the rock. As I fed the remainder of the tank, I noticed a third small RBTA on the left-front side of the rock. COOL - a triple split :-) Now, about six hours after I noticed them, they're all still mostly closed but the 'tentacles' seem to be flowing more in the water. I'll try to post some before (I think I have some recent pics of the BIG anemone) and after pics tomorrow when they are (hopefully) more opened.
  17. This is the idea I had - except I would build a 2x4 frame on top of the carpet then place the plywood on the frame.
  18. That's what I'd like to do with my tank !
  19. I use the Apex solely for the purpose of turning my two 10's and two 40's on and off. I know that you can set the MP's for 'night mode' but that is limited to (eight hours ??) of reduced flow for each pump. I have my 40's set to cut off and the 10's cut on (at 50% power on reefcrest) when the white LEDs go off at night, then the reverse (40's cut on at 100% reefcrest) happens when the white LEDs cut on.
  20. The MR-5 kit http://www.avastmarine.com/ssc/do/product/youbuilt/MR-5-Kit I just finished my water changed, cleaned up the sump, hooked it to a Mag-2 and she's bubbling away ... now to see how long before the green stuff on the glass stops appearing ..........
  21. it may find a buyer but it's not going to get shipped anytime soone ... the are SHUTDOWN due to 15" (and still coming down) of SNOWWWWWWW .. (better them than us !)
  22. Thanks guys ... the Media Reactor Kit went together flawlessly and should be in operation later today - pending your answer When I was researching reactors and media, most of the media information said to soak it in RO water for 24h prior to reef use. I did NOT see this on your media package. What is your (or any WAMAS member) recommendation re: pre-soak?
  23. IMO, the problem with using this as base rock would be the missing 'nooks and crannies' where the beneficial bacteria would grow.
  24. Is your ORP probe new? (or old and needs cleaning???) I just got a probe yesterday and my ORP started out at 180 .. I thought it was too low but now, 24hrs later, it's reading at 338
