  1. question to others for GrrrMomma - since she is going from a 'white' light (maybe 10000K ????) and definitely a new bulb, should she lessen her lighting period? GrrrMomma - how long was your photo period with the old bulb?
  2. GREAT ... never thought about the ports being the key ... thanks to both of you
  3. rocko - do you also have a controller (Apex ?) on your system that you can monitor via the Internet? I have my Apex wired directly to my router and can access it via my INTRAnet at IP 192.168.... I also have my router configured this INTRAnet address to be passed to the INTERnet at IP 68.something. To those who have their controller similar to this and also have an INTERnet visible camera, how do you get the second internal IP address visible outside your INTRAnet? This is what's been keeping me from buying the camera(s) ...
  4. and to that you can add the TONS of debris that is heading towards the west coast from the Japan earthquake / tsunami ... Just saw a report on (CNN or Fox) that the mass is still over a year away from arrival.
  5. Don't be bashful folks - step right up and buy this beauty before someone beats you to it http://www.pacificislandaquatics.com/prestashop/product.php?id_product=741
  6. they're all 3w Cree LEDs with no optics
  7. I made a flow-thru baffle for my chaeto side ... one piece of eggcrate - length is the size of the sump's interior, height is my normal water height - then has a piece of polyfilter attached to it. It acts as a mechanical filter for 'stuff' plus a barrier for the chaeto.
  8. In both pictures, your fingers/thumb are wrapped around the "base plate" (my terminology - I don't remember what EcoTech calls it.) In the two MP40's that I repaired, one base plate was cracked/scraped/worn down so that the white nylon spacer no longer held itself in place. (One was broken, the 2nd was on its way to be broken.) I ordered two new base plates and nylon washers (it may have been part of the 'repair kit') and both MP40s are working fine. I now have an MP10 that won't 'stick' to the magnet while running so I may have to tear it apart, clean it, and see what its problem is!
  9. Tank lit with 23 Royal Blue LEDs at 60% power Tank lit with 24 Cool White LEDs at 45% power Tank lit with Blue & White LEDs
  10. color/size, they were all great .. but they won't stay still .. over half of them are still in my pico tank, looking for a 'home'. The ones that I moved to the main tank are less active, but still moving around.
  11. Near the end last year, I was part of a Group Buy for ricordias. I added a bright red discosoma to my order and when I received it, it was attached to a small sea shell. For weeks it comfortably sat in a small depression on a piece of barnacle. Tuesday I noticed that it was gone and I saw no indications of it on the gravel below the barnacle. Yesterday, I saw it MOVING up the rockwork. I guess one of my hermit crabs liked the mushroom's shell better than its old shell. I now have a red discosoma roaming my tank.
  12. I've always used coral-cutters to nip around the edges but have never done anything very thick. I LIKE the idea of the pipe cutter - should make a nice precise cut!
  13. no - it was sold before I had actually made a decision .. and I think I'm glad it's gone
  14. R2R has a bright red 5" haddoni carpet that would look great in my 120 but I'm wondering if I should spend the money for it. My rock-work is basically 3' center-mass structure about 18" high (i.e. there is some bare gravel across the bottom of the tank on the outer perimeter. My lighting is two DIY units with 12 royal blue and 12 cool white each. If I put the haddoni on the bottom, will it likely stay there, and will it get enough light? (They do need "lots" of light, right ???)
  15. I can definitely attest to this .. When I visited Jan on Wednesday, she fed the tank for me and most of the fish were at the surface, waiting, before she started to feed. Once that frozen chunk hit the water and she started swishing it around, the fish were going crazy looking for food. Very impressive display - and a great food recipe.
  16. My hammer and torches all do that. One torch has some extremely long sweepers .. the luminesence under the actics is awesome
  17. This sounds like a good place to put my 'plan' for my ATO and Kalk stirrer, so we can both see if this is the right way. I plan to have a small tank of RO in a cabinet next to the aquarium stand. Next to the RO tank will be my Kalk stirrer. The ATO unit in the fuge will start a SMALL pump in the RO reservoir that will pump RO water from the reservoit to the Kalk stirrer. This will cause Kalk water to slowly fill the sump until the ATO unit says it's full and stop. I need to build the cabinet this spring so I'll know what size resevoir tank I need.
  18. I'm not exactly sure what Vibrance is, but Jan uses that in her formula. From reading the description, it sounds like a coral food. I have a powdered product called Coral Frenzy ("The Ultimate Coral Food") and I plan to add that to the mix that I am going to make today. (Yup, I'm meeting Jan today at Great Wall to get some food for the tank.)
  19. I'm actually more interested in joining Jan during a trip to the 'market' where she buys the FRESH seafood. I think I can make my own with the help of the WAMAS articles but not in buying the product.
  20. Mine is similar but without the WXM module (my MP10's aren't wireless). I have an MP40 on each end of my 120 (4x2x2) and two MP10's on the back wall. All pumps are plugged into a 9-outlet DJ switch box. The MP40s are on reefcrest mode all day and the MP10s are on reefcrest mode during daylight hours. My tank is mostly softies and LPS so everything flowwwwssssss with the water movement.
  21. I don't remember where I got the idea but I plan to build my own cabinet to use with the ATO and kalk stirrer. The front of the cabinet will be deep enough to house DVDs with a few shelves and the back will have just the floor with the ATO and stirrer sitting on it. I have 26" width next to the main tank, and the cabinet stand for the main tank is 34" so those will be my approximate dimensions - not sure how deep I will make the stand.
  22. From this picture, it resembles a mantis Found a pic of Squilla mantis and the front 'claws' look the same - but the internet pic looks like a solid color body.
  23. +1 on the joke I actually took a bunch of pics but that's the only one that was clear enough to post. Maybe I'll try a few with the regular and zoom lenses - can't hurt.
  24. I've had a problem with two of my coral plugs on the top shelf of the aquarium recently so I removed it and the next rock below it to re-glue the plugs. I put the top rock in the fish acclimator while I got the 2nd rock out of the tank. After the new glue and replacement of the rocks, I found this in the acclimator. I have not added any rock to this tank since I set it up (December) and all of the rock came from the frag system I had in the basement. (i.e. - no new rock for over a year) All corals were on plugs so I don't think he would have come in via corals (but who knows.) The only shrimp in the tank are an old (3-4yrs) pistol shrimp, a purple lobster (about 3"), and two new cleaner shrimp (one week). The hitchhiker is about 1-1.25" in length, translucent body with the black stripes, and very thin - a little more than the ink "cartridge" from a traditional ballpoint pen. My inclination is to release him back into the tank since he's been there for 'quite awhile' anyway and I have seen no harm - but, any reason why I shouldn't???
