  1. what's the "color" of your 65w PC light? I think I'm using a 6500K light and the chaeto is doing great.
  2. yup - I think the MSRP for the newest beast on the block is $694 .. maybe I'll buy a few for my next build .... or not !
  3. what do the LED "triplets" provide that a row of seven whites, a row of seven blues, and a final row of seven whites on each heatsink would provide? Is it easier to group/solder the triplets? I like DaveS's plan but I was never thinking of building them in the triplet arrangement he's using.
  4. I think they are great fish - probably the Nemo factor I have at least one pair in each of my systems. Gold-bar maroons, occelaris, B&W, perculas, and now the picasso's.
  5. I can attest to BRK being there for me when I needed some Pond supplies last summer. I'm not sure how but I blew out my 40w UV bulb and ballast (or whatever it's called), called Ozzie and found out that the parts were IN STOCK and he said he'd hold them for me for the one hour drive it would take for me to get there. Again, as Johnny said, that was for the same day - I would have understood if he was unwilling to hold them for 2-3 days for me.
  6. Tagging along w/ Mr. Sun because my next tank (hopefully 60x30x24) WILL be LED lit and I have the same questions as Dave.
  7. +1 .. when I saw the 'little hint of a polyp' on that plug, I thought the same thing - put it in some light and see if it grows.
  8. very nice, clean looking set-up .. and rimless .. cool
  9. Here's the Picasso Clowns that I picked up at Dr. Mac's this week. I put a piece of rock in the tank that has two SMALL RBTA splits that they'll hopefully grow up with and host in.
  10. Just wanted to say thanks for the great visit, wonderful corals, and awesome Picasso clowns that we picked up today. Along with the trip over/under the Bay Bridge/Tunnel, Bay Bridge, and Eastern Shore, the stop at your store was truly the icing on the cake. Best of luck on the store.
  11. I've had the same response from my fish - they look at it, and watch it fall, but they don't eat it. However, the RBTA must like it. They close up, the food disappears, and the ONE that I originally had has split twice now - so I guess he likes it. Maybe I should name him "Mikey"
  12. Originally I wanted a (6-7-8 foot)x2x2 tank but now I'm leaning towards a 60"x30" - probably 24"tall GLASS tank. (I am sooooo over cleaning the inside of my acrylic tanks!) Don't remember who it was, but someone posted pics of their build and it was a 30" tank - looked pretty awesome to me. Since my arms aren't that long, a 24" tall and 30" deep should still allow me to reach most of the back-bottom of the tank to decorate and reconstruct. Standard equipment will be used and some of it I'm already stockpiling : cone skimmer (in use), Neptune Apex controller (scheduled to arrive 12/28), coral frags in the frag tank, Drews dosing pumps. But what I plan for lighting is still in the 'to expensive to buy now' stage - I want an LED light that will completely light up a 30x30 half of the tank, like T5's or MH's light up my tank now. Several dealers have units that look promising, but at $850 EACH, it's going to be awhile before they hit my doorstep :-) Depending on the layout of the house (this is my retirement tank for after we move), I want the maintenance items to be in a large sump in another room. Planning for that will come after we decide on a house. NINE MORE MONTHS !!!! :-)))
  13. I'm hoping that when I start my next build (early 2012) LEDs will be down in price.
  14. I think the only things 'capable' in my tanks would be the four pairs of clowns. They all seem to be mated up, two pair host in anemones, but none seem to be interested in doing anything more than swimming, hosting, and eating.
  15. not even that often ! in the 50cube, a pistol shrimp that we only see when we rearrange the rock in the 29, an emerald crab that I see every 6-8 weeks
  16. given that you're in Bowie, Frederick may not be that far of a trip for you - Rick's (on the (once) Golden Mile) had a mated pair of gold bar Maroon's last weekend. The female was awesome - about 50% larger than the female of my pair. I think there were some condylactus anemone's with them but weren't actively hosting in them. I have the maroons, true percs, black & white occi's, and standard occi's - only the gold bar pair hosts in an anemone. The B&W pair host in some small/medium fuzzy mushrooms.
  17. ok .. so now that I know what it's used for (thanks everyone), I have a better idea of where to look. Starting w/ my local So. States...
  18. come on up to my house .. I have a few (bazillion) that I'll give you
  19. where does one find 50# bags of Mag Chloride at Home Depot ? What section is it in? What's the brand name or use of the product? I did a search of their site and found nothing and no one at the store knew where it was and we couldn't think of anything other than fertilizer. where do I look and what am I looking for ?
  20. re: the glass .. have you checked Home Depot and/or Lowe's ? I normally get the plexi that I use from one or the other and they usually have glass in the dimensions you want, but not sure about the thickness.
  21. maybe I should dose some vodka .. might make me feel better about losing that nice fish
  22. Jon - the tang is a Scopas .. and he was newly introduced the day of the FFE (11 July). Yesterday was the first time I've actually seen him out swimming and he was always 'near' (w/in 6" of the CBB) but never next to him. They looked like they were swimming 'together' but I never saw any signs that I would interpret as agression. Sean - the salinity of the bagged water was 1.024 - my tank is 1.026 .. Hopefully the two hour acclimation (one cup tank water into the floating bag every 15 mins - it was a big fish bag) would provide adequate time to acclimate that variance. The Scopas could have been bullying but they still looked like they were just swimming at 9pm when the lights went out. I know my tank params are excellent (135g - four fish - no ammonia, nitrites, negligible nitrates) ... Not sure where I'll go from here. The aptaisia's are killing the looks of the tank.
  23. I brought home a CBB yesterday, acclimated it for about two hours, and watched it swim around the tank with my Tang from 11'ish until the lights went off at 9pm. This morning I found it lying on the eggcrate between a Torch Coral and Frogspawn ... could either of the coras 'stung' and killed the CBB?
  24. Guy - if you don't find anyone in a decent timeframe, I have a 65g breeder set up as a sump on my system. The return side has a little LR rubble but you can use it as a temporary home for these guys/things.
  25. +1 .. I was actually going to go with a varied diet. We have lots of food choices (mostly frozen, but a variety of frozen packs) that we feed to all of our fish.
