James - sorry to hear this!!! I feel your pain - believe me! I just lost about $6k in SPS, everything died. Not to mention all my clams, a Flame Wrasse and a few other things. My tank looks as sweet as ever now that I did 2 x 80g water changes, ran poly's for a week, and changed carbon out 2x. Good luck with it. I'm still looking for a good heater....

Looking good I lost my frag from Rik, it was growing nice too! I might be the "one", I've seen a bigger colony btw
-
I hit you up as well.

Depends on the type of tangs -

Francis - Nice pickups! I think those are like the Devils Armor I have - not AOG's though. Mine are REALLY bright metallic looking (which your's look the same) - so either way they are sweet

Thanks for the info on the live bearing. I forgot about that. I guess the ones the revive doesn't kill and that still can hold on to the coral are just stunned then. At least I would assume. Cause I know it doesn't kill them all. A 2min. superconcentration swish will get 90% of them off though AEFW - That is what I do when I get new frags. George up here brought it up when I was talking to him about getting new frags. I dip everything in revive, interceptor, and fwe, and then cut the frag off the base and remount everything. Still not 100%, but a good practice to get into if you don't want issues like the afformentioned.

+1 Nice trip report and pictures, thanks for sharing.

From talking with other reefers that have practical experience with AEFW and REVIVE, it does not kill all the eggs. If it was that easy then you could just dip all your corals once and they would be gone. No need for a QT or subsequent dips. At least that is what I have been told from guys that have had them, and used revive to take care of them. It works great for killing live ones though. It just takes ~ 2 months of dipping every 4-7 days in QT to make sure that all the eggs have hatched and are eraticated. It would be a BIG story all over the reefing forums if revive worked once. At least I would think so. That is a pretty big thing for a nasty pest. It is considered the next worst pest to Montipora Eating Nudi's for good reason. There are a lot of people that just live with them and try to control the population due to them being so hard to eradicate. My .02 - Just saw the part about killing red bugs. It doesn't work from my personal experience to kill all of them. It works great, and I saw LOTS of red bugs in the dip, but they continued to linger on in the tank even after I dipped everthing. This was ~ 8 months ago when I didn't have many sps and no interceptor. Supposeably they stay on the coral, and don't cruise the tank, so one would think that they would be eradicated if you dipped everything. They weren't, so I ended up using interceptor which was extremely easy and caused very little issues. The only issues I had is it took out 4-5 hermits I missed, and one ornamental shrimp. All my snails (50+) that I didn't take out (too hard to get EVERY one of them) were fine and survived From my experience, I have to agree with Bob - that it kills some, stuns some, but the eggs survive.

Detailed instructions for Red bug treatment and the use of interceptor http://www.reefs.org/forums/topic45859.html

I guess the almost would be "no red bugs"

Interceptor also doesn't kill ALL inverts. Snails are generally fine at the regular dose. I only lost 1 shrimp out of 4. All hermits that I missed were lost. Definitely easy to dose.

Double-check your heaters - Lost all my SPS, Flame wrasse + more
Sikryd replied to Sikryd's topic in General Discussion
Thanks guys I really appreciate it. I'm still surveying the damage. The copper test came back negative. Some of the zoa/paly's opened back up. Lost 2 more chalices, and a couple other corals. I'll take a look at those heaters for sure. This is the 3rd heater that has broke (all different brands). The one that I use for my water change stuff is a broken stealth that is stuff "on". I had fail-safes in place for stuck on, stuck off, but no broken glass and not tripping the GFCI. I haven't had such good reefing luck this year :( Hopefully things will look up tomorrow. -

Thanks Kevin - yeah it sucks sometimes. Tank looks pretty crappy still. Loosing some blastos, some chalice mouths are gaping. I'll see what kind of damage to the rest of the this stuff in the next couple days. I'm not sure what glass heater it was (brand) - they're all crappy as far as I am concerned. I won't even waste my money on one to heat my water change water. -

I'm not using the white poly - I have some other ones - forget the name though, so can't tell from the color. I'm going to test it later today for copper. I'm assuming it was whatever heavy metals are in the element part, possibly copper as well due to the wires. I'd pay 3x more for a better heater. I should have known better to not use it even for temporary... -

Thanks guys - I'll probably hit you guys up sometime down the road. The glass was broke long enough, it was white and could tell that it had been sitting in salt water. There was all kinds of flow over it. It was in my skimmer section broke wide open. Time for a nap - too bumbed to do anything else! I'll see if things turn around later today, hopefully they will. I changed ~ 85 gallons, put new carbon, and put in another poly filter (I've had a couple in there the last couple of days when I noticed things were a little "off" by the looks of the corals - I do it as a preventative for things like this) -

Thanks - lol - I assume from the copper, and electrifying it slightly. I didn't get shocked at all though. I have been in the tank the last couple of days and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. It must have been making the circuit till the wire was wiggled, then it blew the gfci. Electricity is a cool thing, it acts very unusual in all kinds of different circumstances. The deaths were from the copper/heavy metals from the element being exposed. -
Just a reminder to check your heaters every month or so. I finally found out what has been taking out all my SPS, plus a bunch of other stuff, including a Flame Wrasse. I put a brand new glass heater in the tank about a 2 months ago to supplement the stealth I had in it since it was only 200w. I had been losing some SPS and figured it had to be from an alk spike. Nope, heater was blown and I only found out this morning since I was doing a water change and the wire wiggled to the heater and blew the gfci. So much for having a bunch of nice coral :( You don't even want to see the carnage of corals that is on my deck now. ~ 100-150 pieces. Guess I'll have an LPS tank for a while (whatever is left of it) - no mas dinero for new stuff with the baby coming :( Sometimes I HATE this hobby!

Good idea on the light mover - I like it. Looking good!

Have you checked for red bugs or other pests? Just a thought...

The wife picked up a camera for me for our Anniversary. She picked a good one. We ended up upgrading though from the Canon 780IS to the Canon SD 980IS It'll be here monday. I can't wait to mess around with the touch screen! Guess I won't be needing to wait and review anything else...

Nice pictures! I got the same camera a few months back and have been loving it for tank only pics. I'm not too fond of it not having a lens protector. Great looking new tank! lovin' it

Deep pocket wrasses on Divers den - Majorie's
Sikryd replied to Sikryd's topic in General Discussion
Nope - they're just a deep water wrasse from one region - which makes them pretty rare is all. I would much rather have a Condei (which is on my wife's list - she just doesn't know it yet ) - About 1/10 the price and look VERY similiar - but have 2 different flashes. I just figured I would post them up since I know a few guys that like rare fish. These ones are kind "bland" in my opinion. Especially for the price, like you said. -
We picked up a girlfriend for our Male Labouti today at Roozens. It was soooooooo cool to watch them interact together. Right away they started swimming together. Then the male layed in the corner, started changing colors and almost went into a trance while the juvenile/female layed underneath him. The wife and I watched them do this for like 20min, with the male then swimming around doing somersaults and stuff. I guess they like each other. Both of them are eating mysis, pellets and flake already, so that was reassuring.
