What's your most expensive fish in your tank?
HowardofNOVA replied to davelin315's topic in General Discussion
six figure KOI!!!! Well to answer your question, my top 3! #3 is my recently purchase Swissguard Basslet, around $100 after WAMAS Discount at BZA -Great fish btw for those interested, highly recommend them, low maintenance so far and doing great in the tank. Stays mostly to the rocks but out enough to recommend high for visibility! #2 Blue Velvet Damsel: This Beautiful, cute, CHEAP little BAS#%^$ killed my Flame Angel one day, Singapore Angel the next and B/W Henoichus Acumintas the following before I literally tore my 75g reef tank apart to get him out!!! Gave him to Mike CLOWNFISH4 who put him in his 50g tank with a Huma Huma Trigger to "teach him a lesson"! The last I saw him, he was parked in the MIDDLE of his tank with the Trigger HIDING under a piece of LR in the corner!!! One BAD FISH!!!! #1 That FREE Clownfish that survived in a 30g tank after no water being added to for 4 MONTHS!!! The lady was was a friend of my X and she gave me the complete setup to get it out of her house after her husband left her and 5 kids! The initial FREE fish got me into SW Tanks and after 5yrs and counting, has exceeded over $10,000.00 and COUNTING!!!! -
What's even more impressive that you go to the diagram pages and print them out and he has them setup for EACH diagram to appear on its own page!!!! .....DUDE! ....step away from the keyboard!!!

Thanks Jeff for the Kit info! Having owned both, I'm hooked on Acrylic for cost, ease of use and appearance. The ONLY real negative I see with it is the care issue and you can't use a razor blade, but as Jeff mentions an occasional day of elbow grease and appropriate sandpaper will have your tank looking like new in no time! ....ah for me that is coming soon! Jeff, Can a tank be done with a Starfire viewing panels, then acrylic the rest? Another recommendation: when we where planning the NADC tank, acrylic won out hands down for that project as well!

Great article Tom!

I shop at both Superpets and Wally's at times, especially for LIVE BRINE shrimp which they both carry. When MD, was working to get discounts at both locations and names excape me now, but the lady at SP was willing to talk but always ask that I stop in AGAIN later to setup a WAMAS Discount. After a while, I stop asking. Great FW setup, SW fish could be better. Stopped in Wallys Monday and met the new owners and mind going BLANK again, but an Asian Couple now own it as about a month ago and will try to ATTEND the Feb meeting and become SUPPORTERS!! SOOOoooooo, I would completely PUT IN THE PAST any feeling about this place now that Mike I believe his name was has finally moved on!! First of all, they PAINTED the walls and working on improvement the visual side of the house now! Looking better but still a way to go. Fish tanks are about the same when Thomas was there, but they have plans to do more with every facet of the store. More supplies, products and inventory. Recommendations, stop in and remind them your with WAMAS! They are listening! signed Howard ... I think?

T5 bulbs - brands, websites, and combo suggestions
HowardofNOVA replied to rsarvis's topic in General Discussion
Ramp up and down on the timer is good, I run 1 UV Aquablue+ and Super Actinic from 8a-10p, then Geisemann actinic+ and 6500k midday from 10a-9p and growth has been acceptable! I've had my 3' 39w bulbs for too long (over 17 months) and just starting to change them over to new ones and adding a 3 set to my 90g tank. Should have started 4-5 months ago, Red Cyano is present now! Feel free to stop in and see the color scheme I'm running in my 90g 3'x2'x2' tank. I'm getting ready to add a 3 set of bulbs to my tank and looking at add one more Actinic+ and Aquablue+. -
Guys IMO, Anenomes are a PITA when it comes to having them setup where YOU want them! IMO, try position them NEAR the area you desire him to be and let them setup. When they don't, give them time to stabilize in the tank before trying to move them again. Give them a chance to catch their breath.

What would you add or change from my fish list?
HowardofNOVA replied to a topic in General Discussion
Jeff, you forgot a Partridge in a Pear Tree!! Awesome wish list!!! I would recommend doing that shopping list in stages, for example, most agressive fish last and Tangs as a unit. Also, I love the Randfordi "Court Jester" Gobies, possibly 2-4 of them for that size and a Tennanti Tang, both are great at grabbing mouthfuls of gravel and feeding on waste. Also, keep in mind, several of those species will feed mostly on live pods, etc, so might want to let your tank get established with those before adding as well, possibly 6-9 months. Good luck and can't wait to see your Tank Tour!!!! -

Reminds me to be thankful for RENTERS insurance that I've been carrying for years! ...you do have Renters Insurance for those renters out there don't ya?? Also, one of the BIGGEST problems I see in tanks (MINE INCLUDED and need to change ASAP) is having a TON of power cords, wires, etc laying close to tanks with little protection! Remember drip loops and keeping the plugs up high above the water lines to reduce exposures! Safe Reefing Everyone! -
MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my new friends!!

Bob and everyone, to you and yours, have a Great Christmas and a Happy New Years! -
Dan, your my hero sir!!! BTW, Congrats on the new addition, both baby and tank!

Arctipods are the bomb!!! Just wish they didn't cost a kings randsom! My 2 CB ate flakes this morning, was too cool! Then gave them my frozen/fresh mix and they ate them too! ...then live brine and they ate them too???? ok, I have 2 PIGS, not CB!!!!
-
I've had several and as Scott mentioned, not much on flakes, but I feed a big variety to my tank including fresh, frozen and flakes and they always seem fat suckers. BUT, Keep this in mind with ANY Pod eating fish, you need a tank about a 6 months to a year old to put them into your tanks.
-
IMO, Randfordi is MUST for any tank, Beautiful, not shy, CONSTANTLY grabbing mouthfuls of sand and cleaning, just a great fish! Not sure about a Twin Spotted Gobie? Had a Tailspotted Blenny that was awesome, until he decided to use my Coco Worm as a home and killed it!

BRK has Glass Cutting Bits for cheap, look there for those bits HD or Lowes, you can get a ton of choices. For Drills, go with a either an Electric (Those with extension cords you plug in) 3/8" Drive Drill: Brands: Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Rigid, Ryobi and Black & Decker are good brands in that order of quality (Price ranges too) My personal favorite: Dewalt If you go CORDLESS, stick with the same brands listed, but get an 18 Volt model in same 3/8" drive. Decent Cordless Model: Rigid 18v -There are alot of PACKAGE DEALS worth looking at too, that includes Saws, Lights, Sanders, etc.

Dittos what DaveH and Chip said! Love the muscles idea, cool! I have a 10 gallon QT setup, was cheap to do, about $50. Includes a heater, MJ pump, Biowheel with Carbon removed and a couple of ceramic cups in there for them to hide in. Nothing else. For the future, recommend investing into something like this BEFORE putting fish into your system. Stress alone combating with RESIDENCE fish could kill them and usually will. Plus if sick, before they have a chance, snails and crabs will have their bones picked before you know it! Start them out with water from your main system after a water change. Start dropping salinity right away to 1.020 or less for some over a few days. Add in Copper drops, fungus medicine, etc that you would like to use. After about a week, bring back up to the rest of the tank level, another week. Also at this time, you need to do what you can in getting them to eat! After they are eating fine and parameters match your main tank should you move AFTER lights go out to main tank or close to evening. Less stress!

She has the walking pnemonia, heading to take her some soup for lunch. Will do! BTW, Is the Psmacora a leather or SPS? Would be interested in a frag of it if you have available? -
This EXACT scenario happened about 2 years ago or so. Can't remember who, but they turned around and the whole container was empty and tank was a cloud of food! ...you know its better to fatten your fish up s-l-o-w-l-y then all at once right??
