  1. Welcome officially to the club.
  2. With the addition of the antibiotic you will need to watch the ammonia levels more closely as it can kill any good bacteria you have populated in the QT system.
  3. I think it was rated for around 200-220 gal. Skimmer was similar to the performance of a Deltec 701. You could talk to Captain Dan at AVAST and ask him since the GSA brand was his before starting the AVAST line.
  4. It looks like hyper-melanization which can happen when the clown gets stung by a coral or new anemone which isn't the case here. The wounds from ich or similar parasite can also cause these marks. Is it the smaller or male that has these spots? The female could be getting rough as part of the bonding ritual and that mild skin damage could cause the hyper-melanization.
  5. Nice photos!
  6. That is the healthiest reef I've seen in a long time. Thanks for sharing.
  7. This is very cool! How long have you had the mother crab?
  8. The iodine can make the corals slime up and the extra slime can slough off some pests like red bugs and flatworms. Some pests are also bothered by the dip enough that they bail off the coral or can be easily blown off with a turkey baster. I would use something like Coral RX over iodine or hydrogen peroxide as both of those can cause the corals to brown out for a few months.
  9. They never seem to live past six months. I guess because of lack of food in my tank for them to eat. Rarely, I have had them die and cause issues of RTN near the site but it was with corals that were not in good flow. I think the reduced flow caused the decay to infect the coral's tissue.
  10. I had an Oceanic 220 like yours with 3x250s over it that I switched to LED's. After a year of trying LED's I switched back to my MH. Luckily I kept the old MH fixtures. The color and growth of the corals were always lacking. LED's didn't have the coverage or penetration. Sides and bottoms of SPS really suffered. For me it was a very expensive experiment. I also had to triple my heaters in the sump and they ran all year with the LED's instead of just winter time with the MH's. So it wasn't a perfect energy saving option when you factor in the heaters.
  11. They look like Acanthastrea lordhowensis
  12. About two years has been average for me.
  13. Try Ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/89mm-3-5-inch-THK-Premium-Diamond-coated-hole-saw-core-drills-bit-PILOT-BIT-/121100644523?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c322930ab#ht_1457wt_918 Stop bragging.
  14. DaveS - I don't have a tank to offer but would be willing to donate funds towards one. Sounds like we should have another coral benefit auction at your place like we did many years ago for the tanks in the children's cancer treatment ward. Getting tanks into schools goes right along with the WAMAS mission statement, maybe the club can also donate some towards it if the account allows it.
  15. I would say the nice looking coral frags get spoken for the fastest.
  16. I agree with her, you will be fine and a nice water change when you get back will set things straight. Tanks can run fine without skimmers. Normally the crash is caused by temp swings and lack of water movement. Juat having the skimmer off should be an issue for a few days.
  17. I say bare your bottom and turn up the flow.
  18. I get the cheap ones from Harbor Freight. They are made in China, probably have lead in them.
  19. I've been using them for over 20 years and I can't say there have been any issues with my tanks that I could blame on the ties. The amount of anything leached out of them would be quickly diluted in the tank water and then removed via skimming or water changes. CA and their warning labels are out of control. I read recently where according to CA toilet paper can also cause cancer since the paper contains dioxins left over from the bleaching of brown wood pulp to make the paper white.
  20. Nice looking stuff!
  21. That's a sweet tank!
  22. Welcome to the club. How long have you been in the hobby? We love seeing pictures of other people's tanks so post them up.
  23. Thanks for the bump because I totally missed it the first time.
