  1. It it possible to get useful captive bred snails, hermits, and serpent stars?
  2. It made no sense to have quiet tank plumbing if there was noise from under the stand, so when I set up this system I ended up using a little 100gph fountain pump as the return from my second sump (skimmer/fuge) back to the primary sump (tank drains/main return) - everything bigger created water noise. I didn't think it would have any negative effect, it would just allow more time for the skimmer to process stuff, but I figured since I'm bored, that I should go ahead and make a post to ask what people think about using such a small pump. I don't want any water noise.
  3. Congrats and good luck on the new setup. Planning and setting up is both fun and challenging
  4. I accidentally came across something about dipping/dosing with, surprisingly to me, witch hazel. It was on the Credabel Labs FB page. Has anyone seen any articles besides that one, or actually tried the method? It sounds crazy to me, having not heard about it from more sources.
  5. I was thinking the sapphire damsels, but the 2019 list made me think they would be much harder to get than others. I'm not sure how many I would want, maybe 3. One of the things about CB is that people don't have to be so worried about initial losses that they buy a couple extra fish to make sure they still have a certain number when those almost expected losses happen. If people know they will have initial losses, they shouldn't be purchasing those WC species of fish.
  6. Yes it is, thank you. I passed the favor on and gave the new one to my friend who didn't care that it was tempered. This one has a few scratches, but nothing like my old 75 which I ended up abandoning when I vacated my storage unit because it seemed no one wanted it and I didn't have a way to move it at the time. I'm pretty good at drilling, I have done it a lot. I drilled 5 holes in the tank itself (3 x 1.5 exits and 2 x 1" inputs), and 3 holes (for 3 x 1.5) drains in the bottom of the external box (which I had to do twice because I dropped something on the first bottom glass I had drilled). I debated for a while about drilling for CL exit but decided to do OTB intake, partly because my wrists were bothering me too much (both have been broken before, so all the drilling I did had them hurting/tingling for days), and partly because whoever might get the tank after me would probably have no use for holes down low in the tank. The CL intake isn't in the tank in the picture because one of my pumps was broken and I have to buy a new one before I can use the CL. I drilled a few hundred holes in a 1" pipe and painted it black. At first I used a 1.5 and cut slots in it, but the pipe was too wide to fit in the corner, because I put my return holes so close to the ends of the wall not thinking about the intake (at that point I was still thinking of drilling more holes). Thanks to Meleev for the OTB intake idea, though I think his pipe had nowhere near enough holes in it. Here's a pic of the intake, just not hooked up: Other side of it, not attached: Water has to be put in the top of the pipe to prime the CL pump, hence the sticking up part. The valve helps keep air from getting in before I can get the cap on the pipe. I tested the CL with a pump that is only 950gph, which worked, but along with that pump being noisy, the flow from either end was not strong enough to feel on my hand more than half the length of the tank when I want some crossing over as the alternating by the SCWD is happening. The two black pipes in the corners of the tank are CL returns (outputs are behind the rocks). I didn't need those holes for sump returns because I'm using a Sea Swirl. There is a SCWD on the CL returns.' I'd really like to replace the painted pipes with black PVC, because the paint gets scratches which then shows the white which is obnoxious.
  7. It's just a 75g, but it's a big improvement compared to what little stuff I had to use during the past couple years (since deciding not to finish the ripoff of a used 120 I have just sitting full of junk in the junk room). This is my first BA OF tank (DIY external box), so I am realing loving the lack of noise. There is nothing else after a BA.
  8. It would almost be a wall. Might be nice behind a bar at that height.
  9. Unless your goal really is a lookdown tank, shorter stands don't do tanks justice when it comes to viewing. I built my stand at 32 inches tall, which, for my arm reach and 5'3.5" height, is perfect for the 75g tank which is 18" tall. When I sitting relaxing and look at the tank, which is how I usually see it, the front display view is at perfect height. IMO you are at least 5'5", you should stick with something in the 34" range, unless of course your primary desired view is from standing up looking down rather than while relaxing.
  10. I put more of my liverock in the new tank, so I guess I can post a general picture of the tank now (taken with phone since I don't own a camera). I've got more rock, but it won't fit. I need to change the white PVC piece on the Sea Swirl that is sticking out like a sore thumb. I have to have open rockwork to accommodate a fish I don't have yet. Some other pieces of rock look odd together, but more corals will eventually fix that problem. I lost almost all sps a long while back (except orange monti and pavona) (and gave away a ton of LPS), so I will be looking for more in the future (after I get a new pump) to put on those bare rocks. Maybe the next WAMAS meeting...
  11. I actually think I saw something about a captive bred fairy wrasses the other day, but since I wasn't looking for wrasses, I didn't bother remembering the info. Given your treatment, your system would be okay. I'll be looking to get fish in about a month or so. Dr Mac has the tangs but nothing to meet my blue requirement, and I'd prefer getting the fish at the same time. I wish I could get a CB cherub angel for my blue, but no one is producing them. All I have right now are a shy orchid dottyback who is mostly out of view, and a striped blenny who owns and patrols every inch of the water column, and I think watches me constantly through the glass.
  12. Do you know if they were in a separate system from the other fish?
  13. I am just curious if there is anyone here who only has captive bred fish, what the combinations are, and where the livestock was purchased. I'm wondering who sells fish that has a dedicated captive bred system, since the secondary reason for wanting captive bred is to avoid diseases brought in by wild caught fish. Apparently Dr Mac has only captive bred and has Biota yellow tangs, but variety for other species is an issue. The only 2 fish I have currently were captive bred, but they were mixed with wild caught fish in the store, which is kind of a shame because I have to be less certain about what might be in my tank.
  14. Air,Water, Ice website says 3 to 5 years.
  15. +1 make sure sump water level isnt higher than before.
  16. How did I know you'd pick a super model? HaHa.
  17. Either that's a really big tank or you would be too tiny to fix those issues you find.
  18. LOL. I really wish we had a good snow for Xmas. I have this relative from FL here who has never been in snow.
  19. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a monti-eating nudibranch. I hope I don't ever see them in my tank.
  20. I think a tiny elephant about an inch tall , who could siphon detritus and stuff from the sand bed with its snout would be cool. Elephants eat plant matter so maybe they would extend that to include algae. They might be better at getting around corals on liverock than clumsy single-footed turbo snails. If it had ears like Dumbo, it could probably have some limited swimming ability.
  21. LOL. Maybe someone will make designer plesiosaurs that are small enough for home reef tanks. I think a Lightning Plesiosaur would look really cool. It would have to be trained to eat prepared foods before I would get one, and would have to be compatible with my yellow tang because that's my favorite fish. It would be a big plus if it would eat algae and poop trace elements. If they can revive DNA from an extinct animal to make a living one, I'm sure they can accommodate all of those requirements.
  22. +1 I just write on pipes with a sharpie.
  23. What are the dimensions of that tank?
  24. I'm at Blackwater Falls State Park and there is a blizzard right now, which was not in the forecast.
  25. I felt successful when my tank was producing enough to pay for its own upkeep, looked good, and had variety. Right now it is costing me money and lacks variety. Knowing basic tank maintenance and water chemistry is simply not enough. My mistake was that I didn't consider all possible factors in the environment around the tank that can have serious adverse impact on what is in the tank. Unfortunately, there isn't much information on the internet, and some things are hard to identify. Consider everything you do in your home, chemicals you use, air quality, ventilation and air conditioning, pets in the home, cleaning chemicals you use, mold, insects that might get in the water, and a lot of other things.
