  1. The 20g I had to set up in a rush doesn't have any sump, so the float valve for ATO is just in there and the water current makes it flick on and off every few seconds. What can I use to create a no-flow perimeter around it? Would one of those feeding rings do the job even though it is just at the surface? Maybe a piece of 3" PVC pipe the entire depth of the tank which I don't really want to do and would have to find a way to attach?
  2. Is it reasonable and possible to raise just the pump of my skimmer so the water can be deeper? The skimmer is a Regal 170 INT with a Reef Octopus 3500s pump. I can't raise the skimmer itself higher, and I don't want to have to lower the water level if I don't absolutely have to do it.
  3. If anyone needs a temp tank for these, I have free tanks due to moving that have to go by Saturday. https://wamas.org/forums/topic/103737-free-tanks-lights-need-gone-asap/
  4. These are FREE and MUST be gone by Saturday or go in the dumpster. Silver Spring/White Oak Rte 29 near the NH Ave ramp 20904 . I am moving to Baltimore and the person who was supposed to help me skipped out two weeks in a row, so now I'm at the last minute moving all by myself with my SUV and the only things I really can't move by myself are these tanks. I was planning to get another tank once I fix up the house, so I may as well get rid of these now. But they have to go by Saturday. The only way I can move the 75 to the dumpster is if I break it, so I hope someone takes it. 75 gallon tank with DIY ugly stand: drilled 4 holes w/bulkheads. Standard 48x18. If you are on a super low budget or just want a QT or breeding tank or sump tank, then you would want this tank. Has 2x 1" return bulkheads 1 in each upper corner corner, and 2x 1.5" bulkheads in the center back which have a low profile overflow in front of them. I accidentally broke the external box and hour ago when trying to take apart the plumbing, so it's gone. 50 gallon tank: was using as a sump so it's not pretty at all but still useful as a QT or sump. 36x18. Has one drilled hole which is sealed over. Tek Light 48" 8-bulb fixture. I haven't used it for a couple of years, but there are bulbs in it. Now that I'm moving to a house with an electric bill I'm gonna have to stick to LEDs. Please someone take these tanks so they don't get trashed.
  5. I finally bought a house so no more stupid apartment rules about aquariums. I do have to worry about the floors being wood instead of concrete. It's an old house (1945) with the original wood floors. I bought it "as is" so I have a lot of work to do in it before I can put up the tank, but the tank setup is part of the work I need to do in the living room. It's going to be a couple of months before I can physically start on the tank project, but I have to do a lot of planning. I can't do an in-wall tank, so I want to build a large unit that the tank can be set into with a couple inches in front of it so water doesn't drip onto my wood floor (the sides and back of the unit will keep water off the floor). The tank section would be 6 ft and then on each end a tall 12" cabinet, so the unit would be about 8 ft long. There will be a top going all the across and a back, and I can hang lights from that structure, plus a front flip-open panel to hide everything above the tank. On the outer ends I'll still have a couple of feet of space, so I'll possibly put a flip-down counter space to put stuff on when I'm working on the tank. This will be along the lengths of the beams under the floor and those look to be a max of 2 ft apart (didn't actually measure), so the thing needs to be at least 24" wide but I'm getting a 72x18. I'll build the stand with supports in the right places to be able to put a smaller tank on it if needed. I don't want the weight of a sump on the floor. I was thinking I'd drill the floor to put a sump in the basement, but in this house that part of the basement is a finished room that I don't want to become a tank equipment room. So I'm just going to make the tank into an AIO using the ends of it, and I'll still have enough room for my favorite fish. Years ago before my 38g was used for drill practice at frag fest, I had made it into an AIO with both ends having a section of macros - the contrast of the macros on the ends with the display section in the middle framed by the macros was really cool looking, so I would kind of like having that design (maybe I can put a little hole in the macro section dividing wall for fish to nibble at any bits or pods that wander through). Hopefully the costs to fix up the house won't mess up my tank plans. Most of the expense is stuff like a parking pad that is costing almost 7k, taking out the oil boiler system and installing a mini split for heat and AC which is gonna be at least 7k. I haven't found an electrician yet and have no idea what it will cost. The plumber is at 3k just for a few initial things. Curses to metal pipes that keep me from doing plumbing stuff myself - after all the years with saltwater tanks I know basic plumbing by now as long as the pipes aren't metal. Eventually I'll have to replace entire runs because there are still galvanized metal pipes mixed in with copper pipes - hopefully I can get them replaced with pex. If anyone has an empty 72" 125 tank FS let me know. I'll also be looking for lights and gyre pumps. I should have enough LR already. But I lost what was left of my corals because of 2 heat incidents that happened a couple of months ago when I wasn't home - call them the casualty of living in an apartment where you have no control of heat and AC.
  6. I have seen The Blob (the original one) at least a dozen times - I've never seen cyano that looks like it, but for sure runs over everything. (My family is from PA and that movie was on TV a lot there due to local stations wanting to show a movie that was filmed in PA).
  7. It is an AIO, so the display and sump are the same tank. Right now I have a Maxijet sucking water out of the sump side to put into the display side, but why waste electricity if I can use a siphon to do the same thing (aside from aesthetics) ? Only the siphoning end of the pipe or hose would be under water (in the sump side), otherwise the siphon won't happen from sump to display. So - important in the event of a power outage - the outflow would add at least a tiny bit of oxygenation by breaking the water surface in the display, and the flow back over the wall into the sump will add another bit of oxygenation breaking the water surface. I don't know if that is adequate oxygenation for anything near the bottom of the tank if there is an outage for more than just a short unknown length of time (flow is another problem, but battery operated bubblers don't really add any flow either).
  8. I was thinking of doing an infinite siphon for my 29g diy AIO, so I can take out the Maxijet I have pumping water from sump side to display side. I can't use macros with the pump in there, and am wondering if a siphon way to move water from side to side would be enough circulation in that size tank to get me through a power outage without needing battery things.
  9. Those are nightmares! I had a dream that the fish were turning into monsters that were trying to get out of the tank. In another dream which I had a couple times, the fish were swimming through the air all around the room and I was trying to catch them to put them back in the tank (they seemed oblivious to the fact that they weren't in water).
  10. For smaller volumes I use salt buckets that have holes in the lids for the hose.
  11. Take the tank apart and hold onto the unbroken panes until you or someone has a use for them. I've always used glass from old tanks to make overflows and baffles. Oh, also someone could use it for drilling practice!
  12. There is a really great article on this topic I read a while back, but unfortunately I didn't save the link. I can't help with the math, but I do know that in general, doing a 35g change once a week is a little bit more efficient at reducing waste than doing a 5g change 7 days a week. If I had an auto water changer though, I'd go for the continuous changes because you never know when something is going to die, or something in the atmosphere gets into the water, or pets stick their paws in the water.
  13. The way I've dealt with removing precipitate from using clumped salt in the past is not the most efficient, so I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on another method (it will be in my mixing Brute, not in the tank). This was a full bag that had about a 1" hole in it, which is too much salt to waste. I'm just going to use it for the liverock holding tank (my disconnected 50g sump) so the chemistry change isn't going to be a problem.
  14. I've had some rather crazy hobby-related dreams.
  15. Don't pop them! Emerald crabs will eat Valonia, but there is a possibility that they will break them, causing a worse problem. Bigger crabs might do a better job, but of you have small fish, there may be a problem, and you will need to watch for the crabs picking the polyps from corals.
  16. Thank you for the advice!
  17. I was gonna replace my T5 bulbs for my 29g, but after a week of looking at prices, I decided to use this LED fixture which I had laying around. I burned some stuff using this fixture in the past, so if someone has some tips for intensity settings and distance from the surface, I'd really appreciate hearing them. There's no brand on it. It says 120 watts, has two knobs to adjust brightness, and has 3 fans. I still need to get something from which to hang it - sitting it low like this puts all the light in a central area, and there is a risk of a rambunctious, water-loving, high jumping kitten giving it a dunk. Thanks.
  18. Then it's a good name!
  19. If I did use a combo HOT filter- skimmer, do you think Icould use Biopellets in it, since the skimmer part will automatically skim the affluent? I have never used Biopellets, so maybe someone would knows more about them could respond? Just saw some bad reviews about the specific Skilter brand, but there is a CoraLife combo unit and probably some others I need to investigate.
  20. I'm trying to find a decent skimmer to use on my undrilled 29 diy AIO. I have an old CPR which uses a MJ1200, but I wasn't really happy with it when I was using it (about a decade ago). Are there any mods to make the CPR better (more predictable, productive, with less micro bubbles) ? Or some affordable but better alternative that uses a similarly sized pump (I don't have space for a large submersible pump)? EDIT TO ADD: I had a Skilter on my first reef tank, a 45g. I just noticed such things still exist. Seems better than the CPR skimmer I have, so maybe I should just get something like that, just use better media in it. Any thoughts on this idea?
  21. Did you get it named yet?
  22. I just want to say thank you to the folks who donated frags to the raffle. The one I receives is a nice zoanthid, not sure what it's called (will take a picture later).
  23. Geez first meeting back, and here I am running very late. I'm on my way though. Looking forward to seeing folks.
  24. I had one of Doug's baby. I ended up giving away my fish, so I don't know where it is now - hopefully having a good life.
  25. I managed to find work coverage, so I will be able to attend. I look forward to seeing folks!
