  1. HI! As for the wall, After dealing with salt creep that wouldn't come off, I'm trying a dense piece of ceiling Tile behind my tank. So far so good. It absorbs the splashes and salt but remains dry between the wall and tile. It was easy to cut to size and was free. I've known others who have put glass or acrylic up too with success. HTH.
  2. Have you tried putting a trash bag onto the surface of the water and then taping the edges down? I then add a little weight on top of the outside to help stabilze/break the water surface. I used to transport my RO/DI water this way. HTH
  3. Mine works great (but unfortunately mine was 2x the price at my local LFS and I HAD to buy it because we were looking at 3 days without power)! It worked for those 3 days on 1 set of D batteries. Granted I'm not as heavily stocked but I did alternate between having 2 of those in my SW tank and then 1 each in my FW and SW. I'd be interested in getting 1-2 more if anyone decides to do a group buy. Thanks for the sketch. never knew that and next time I will try the tube idea. It should really add to the flow since my pump is pretty strong. Thanks for posting!
  4. Weelll, 3x now all I've used is a simple battery operated pump for my 55 and nothing has died. Power has been out for up to 3 days. For that one I did do a 20% water change a made sure to use the shower with the maximum amount of spray to pump in any extra O2 possible. as to this last one Iput it deep in near my favorite 'nem and had no Ill effects after 6 hours. I don't feed them during power outs unless it's more then 2 days. The I do feed VERY lightly making sure EVERY piece gets eaten. It's just enough for them to get by and done lightly because in one end out the other!and if my filters not working .... HTH.
  5. NOW you tell me that! I wish I had known to do this for my tank!
  6. I live in Gaithersburg and have a large ball of it to give away if you want it.
  7. IF you REALLY need to move it, I've been told that you can sucessfully get it's foot loose by running an ice cube around it's foot. BUT that doesn't mean it will stay put and not move from were you put it.
  8. HI! I'd focus on one tank at a time and do some reading. Questions like do you want it to look like a reef, atoll, island, 2 islands, have the rock go from front to back or vice versa or side to side, how tall, caves vs no caves can tend to help. I think you also may want to invest in 1-2 med. size pieces. Many WAMAS members sell live rock for a reasonable price. The other thought would be to drill holes through the rock and stack it up using a rod to join it togehter to create tiers/shelves. Our last speaker talked about doing just that and if you look up the 500 (?) gallon thread of Json's (cyntrophene? SP?) you'll see he did the same but in a grander scale. HTH.
  9. I just said to myself " I need more snails to eat algae!" Any chance you'll be near Giathersburg anytime soon? I'll gladly take a few!
  10. When you are ready for an anemone you could consider a carpet 'nem. They are sligther harder to keep BUT they stay small- 1-2' MAX.- are pretty & cool and once settled don't really roam far. Your system needs to settle and any rock present needs to be permeated with needed bacteria as well as getting things in balance. A nano can get off balance fairly quickly. By waiting to add corals and 'nems, you can learn what does and doesn't throw your system off. My 10 gallon had only 2 small fish and 1-2 corals in it. Water evaporated quickly and sometimes my SGH was pretty high. I soon learned by looking at the tank when to add more water that had a little salt in it to balnce it all out. That is learned over time. So don't take it to hard when posts say take your time. We all want it right away then later realize 'Hey, cool I like that coral or fish or ______ and realize it's not compatible with______ that's in our current tank. So enjoy and take a long draft of patience and read several good books. HTH.
  11. Great video but I couldn't watch it all the way through! LOL! I'm squeamish... POP... close eyes... is he done yet? Phew! I think I'll just have you do my BTA sometime! Thanks for showing us- even with my eyes closed.
  12. Thanks for making the rest of us drool! Thanks for sharing!

    Chaeto

If that doesn't work then p.m. me next week and I'll give you a large ball of it.
  14. I'll bring some and you can tell me. This week is crazy so let's try next week w/ me stopping by your work? Don't worry about the frogspawn, I bought a nice piece and the clowns are leaving it alone because they have 2 nems to beat up. See you!

    RBTA Spilt!

    Yeah! Happy maother's , er, Daddy's day!
  16. Thanks for the thread. I think It just got them from another WAMAS member. These survived being out of water for several hours! Mine are lack and have 1 white dot on their shell. I've seen 1 in my 20 and 1 in my 55. They seem to like the algae prone rocks. They can move fast and come out at night. I like them! They move like a nudibranch but are not one. Cool!
  17. Thanks! I can trade a small frag of leather or mushroom for it. LMK when.
  18. I'll second the xenia smell. I scraped some off of some plastic with an old credit card and placed it on some rubble rock. EVERY time I put my hands near my face I could smell it. Worse than a formula fed baby's diaper. I put the plastic in the trash and could smellit outside the bathroom. Next time I'm wearing gloves. Never thought to frag xenia by pump.... A new fast method of fragging xenia? Hmm. Have to think about that one. Treesprite - I have a few pices of rubble rock for you. One with red zenia if you want it.
  19. Okay, my other fish getting along thread is now buried. So my ? is can 1 blue velvet damsel and 2 turbos damsels, 1 strawberry chromis, 2 percula clowns and 2 PJ cardinals live together in a 55 with lots of cavesand hiding spots?
  20. Grav, I was wondering if the skimmer should be used to help with the cloudiness but I ended up hauling out the sand out of the 20long, washing it outside and resetting up the sand, the saved SW, et al. There is now 2 happy blue/green chromis and 1 baby clown in there. Now to figure out were to put my beloved turbos. HTH. Thanks!
  21. Inna, That is really neat!!! Would you consider adding me to the list for a baby? I can do a trade if you're interested- including new stuff like Prime or phosban. LMK. Thanks!
  22. I don't know but if you ever frag it and want to trade for another softie at a meeting, please p.m. me! I like it!

    Liverock

I haven't had to do this but others have kept theirs alive by putting it in saltwater, and running a pump and filter until needed - with some SW added as needed.
  24. Thanks for your thoughts. The tomatoe is separate for now- he hides in the mass of chaeto and has a long, large hiding tube to swim in. So 2 medium blue/green chromis, 2 PJ's and 1 baby tomato and a mandarin are to many fish for the 20? If I leave the damsel in will it pick on the goby? My last firefish didn't survive. Should I temporarily take out the damsel ( OHH I caught it! Oh rats, it was just a dream.) and put it in the other tank? more thoughts and questions. Better to ask now than to find out later....
  25. a 20 gallon long using live rock and sand from another tank, filters from an established tank, " clean recycled" SW, chaeto, and 1/2 new sand? I'm thinking a week as it already has sat more than a week but then I did tear it down to wash the sand while saving 90% of the water and keeping the live rock wet, the filters wet, et al. Q.2 : Can a pair of ocellaris clowns get along with a tomato clown? Q.3 : Can a black velvet damsel get along with a turbo damsel? Here 's the deal: I'm thinking of going with a less aggressive tank (55) and a more territorial tank (20 gal.) but don't neccessarily want throw off the balance that I curremntly have. BUT my formerly timid turbo damsels are picking on my baby tomato clown and my formerly nonaggressive blue velvet is becoming slightly more bossy towards my PJ fish. So I was thinking of putting them together. My other thought would be flip the situation and put the tomato clown, the pajama cardinals, the blue chromis, and possibly a mandarin goby in the 20 and just put the turbos in the 55 where there is more territory so to speak. Any thoughts?
